  7. Abstract:
  8. Nowadays, applications of the synthetic materials are developing in civil engineering projects and widely used in these projects. Therefore, during previous years; use of the Geotextiles as one of the Geosynthetic materials in order to filtration, drainage, separation, soil protection, etc have developed ever-increasing. The goal of this research is modeling and studies of the Geotextiles application in the downstream filter zone of embankment dams in combination with granular materials using FLAC2D software. Gordeh Bin embankment dam situated in West Azerbaijan province has been chosen as case study. In this matter, different models have been made with changes in thickness of the inclined downstream filter zone (0.8, 1, 1.2, 1.5 and 2 m) and also changes in number of the Geotextile layers (one, two and three layers). In these models different parameters are considered as follows: effect of filter layer thickness and number of the Geotextile layers on total amount of leakage of dam body and dam foundation, safety coefficient against piping, hydraulic gradient and amount of leakage in filter's width unit and cost of filter zone execution. Results show that use of the Geotextiles with one, two and three layers (horizontal and vertical) increases the safety coefficient against piping. With increasing in number of layers in a constant width of filter, hydraulic gradient and flow in leakage unit increase; in other words, filter's capacity to pass the flow is increased. Increasing of number of the Geotextile layers in downstream filter zones with less width will be more effective, and increasing of filter layer's width will reduce its effect. Finally with take into consideration of technical and financial matters, an inclined filter zone (one meter width) with one layer Geotextile in inclined and horizontal parts; also an inclined filter zone (0.8 m width) with one layer Geotextile in inclined and horizontal parts can be selected as best options for competition with two meter width filter zone of granular materials. Hence, application of the Geotextiles as downstream filter zone in embankment dams because of their fast execution especially in cases with lack of good quality and suitable materials or when the preparation of filter materials is expensive, can be considered and used.
