  7. Abstract:
  8. Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) is one of the emerging technological trends that paves the way for the next generation medical systems by offering proactive wellness management and early detection of diseases. WBAN, as standardized by IEEE 802.15.6, is a network composed of intelligent, miniaturized, low power sensors that are strategically implanted in, placed on, or in close proximity to the human body. The sensors have responsibility for recording vital physiological signals and wirelessly transmitting them to a central hub for further processing. In this study, we have first investigated the applicable channel models for a typical WBAN. Considering various scenarios with different carrier frequencies, bandwidths, body movements, and transceiver locations, the well-known Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC) is used to check an available channel data set against 11 different statistical distributions. Subsequently, using the obtained channel models, an analytical framework is developed that enables us to evaluate the performance of WBANs in terms of symbol error rate, reliability, lifetime, ergodic capacity, and outage probability metrics. Such an analysis assumes even greater significance as it takes into consideration the principal requirements of WBANs from the perspectives of available energy, transmission power, and data rate so that to assure long-lasting, harmless, and reliable communications. The numerical results cast light on the capabilities of the proposed framework and the valuable insight that it provides into a WBAN operation. Determination of optimal node attributes including modulation size, duty cycle, energy per symbol, and transmission power can be highlighted as one of the most important achievements. Furthermore, node positioning is another useful application that has been built around the assessments carried out. By using any of the introduced metrics as the performance indicator, the location of either the sensor or the central hub is chosen in a way that leads to a more favorable outcome for the metric of interest
