  7. Abstract:
  8. Energy is a production factor and its availability and accessibility contributes to the improvement of the social welfare. Sustainable supply of energy is a prerequisite to the social and economical development. Over-exploitation of exhaustible energy resources along with the destruction caused by human activities has caused the environmental degradation. Therefore sustainable economic growth and improvement of the social welfare depend upon efficient supply of energy which ought to be compatible with the environment. Sustainable development is a concept which depicts a compromise between three aspects of development which are economical, social and environmental compatibility.
The present research work is involved with development of an energy system model which represents the flow of energy from primary resources through processing and end use technologies where the useful energy requirement in various social and economical sectors is met. The impact of energy supply chain on the environment at each level of processing and conversion is embedded in the model structure. A multi-criteria analysis of changes in the energy system has then been applied and indices related to the sustainable development of the whole system have been concluded with the help of scenario analysis. The first scenario is based on the extension of the trend of energy demand and it is assumed that the price of primary energy is equal to world energy prices. Results indicate that if the optimum point is achieved, the total sustainability index of the energy system improves and it rises from 59.4% to 89.9%. In the second scenario it is presumed that energy subsidies shall persist. Results of the model application show that energy subsidies decelerate the improvement rate of the total sustainability index because it remains in the range of 61.9% and 85.5%. Third scenario is founded on high economic growth rate while a policy of energy subsidies is continued. Application of the model and sustainability analysis show that the rate of sustainability improvement would be reduced considerably when high economic growth is accompanied with energy subsidies. It was found that sustainability of the overall energy system increases in the range of 19.8% and 42.39%. Since the relative importance of renewable energies is an indication of sustainability of the energy system, it is concluded that utilization of renewable energy resources would further improve the sustainability
