  7. Abstract:
  8. An important issue in High-Frequency circuits is the transmission of electrical signals in Integrated Circuits and Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs). At high frequencies, however, the often used transmission lines suffer from high conductor and substrate loss as well as unwanted electromagnetic coupling to other circuit elements caused by parasitic substrate surface. One method through which both of the above problems may be solved is utilizing waveguide structures on PCBs and ICs. In this way, due to the reduction of conductor loss, a large proportion of signal passes easily. Moreover, and because of closed nature of cavity waveguides, neighboring circuits are protected against electromagnetic coupling. This method, although plausible at first glance, brings about the problem of connection of waveguide components to other circuit elements which are located on the wafer surface and generally use transmission lines for transmission of microwave signals. This connection between transmission lines and waveguide must be designed in such a way as to minimize the reflection (maximize the power delivered) and at the same time introduce negligible loss. The subject of this thesis is the design of transitions between substrate integrated waveguides and planar transmission lines, which, considering the sensitivity of design in terms of transmission of a maximum amount of signal, is critically important. Design is carried out in HFSS and a sample of design has been fabricated on PCB. CPW probe measurements have been carried out which, for a back to back transition configuration, demonstrate over 50 % bandwidth at -13 dB return loss
