  8. Through our work, we conducted a three-stage solution to effectively reduce the impact of 'concentration polarization' and 'fouling' on ultrafiltration process. The stages were compromise of: 1. the design and selection of appropriate equipment along with outlining the operational parameters, 2. the pretreatment process design, and 3. the cleaning process design. Because of the presence of fat, there are incline both in permeate flux and the quality of the final product. Therefore, we studied the different methods of removing the lipid content, during pretreatment stage. After examining these methods, finally, we found that adding chitosan parallel with employing centrifugal separator is the best procedure. Also, some inorganic matters, particularly calcium and phosphore, are playing a notable role in membrane fouling. To reduce the unwanted impact of these inorganic matters, we used both thermal treatment and pH adjustment. To secure the efficiency of this important removal stage, we accurately considered all operational parameters. In addition, some other factors, specifically the factors effecting membrane operation, such as temperature, pressure, and concentration rate, etc were studied. Some certain parameters, namely temperature and concentration rate, were examined by ultrafiltration pilot facilities. It should be noted that because of the lack of microfiltration membrane in this project, clarification of whey in pilot scale and investigating its affects on permeate flux, was impossible, therefore it is suggested to be continued in future.
