  7. Abstract:
  8. Integrated design includes CAD, process planning and CNC code generation based on an integrated data structure. To enable different CAD/CAM software solutions to be interoperable, it is required to support data exchange in manufacturing enterprises. To realize interoperability there are two basic approaches: i. to focus on STEP standard to support data exchange between CAD systems as well as CAPP/CAM and CNC machining systems; the use of STEP standard ensures the data integration based on STEP standard. ii. utilizing a platform consists of structures and procedures to enable exchange of data between different CAD/CAM/CAPP software applications seamlessly. In this article, the important integrated and interoperable CAD/CAM information system platforms have been reviewed. The reviewed platforms lack structures and procedures for interoperable CAD/CAM product development. Most of platforms don’t support integration of data, feasibility of data interchange based on ISO 10303 Standard (STEP) and ability to enable interoperability between different CAD/CAM application software. Considering these lacks, an integrated and flexible platform for interoperable CAD/CAPP/CAM/CNC systems named INFELT STEP has been proposed. The different aspects of this platform have been discussed based on an integrated CAD/CAPP/CAM interoperable system. Several layers have been designed in INFELT STEP. These layers support all application software engaged in CAD/CAPP/CAM product development. The engaged CAD/CAM application software can send required information based on their own data structure. The INFELT STEP layers have been designed so that they convert the application software’s processed data to the structured data model based on STEP Standard and store the structured data in the system’s database. Vice versa the layers also retrieve the structured data based on STEP standard and convert it to CAD/CAM/CAPP application software’s data structure in an interoperable environment. The Layers manage the CAD/CAPP/CAM data while CAD/CAPP/CAM application software corporate with each other. Based on STEP data structure, the INFELT STEP maintains the integration of CAD/CAM/CNC operations while supporting the flexibility of application software’s interoperability based on their own data structure. The capabilities of INFELT STEP have been exercised by a prototype sample in a case study.
