  7. Abstract:
  8. Yttrium Aluminum Garnet powders possessing controlled size distribution has found applications in production of transparent ceramics, phosphors, laser host materials and composites. Sol-Gel Combustion process is one of the versatile methods to produce nanometeric garnet powders. This procedure is based on combustion of a concentrated gel of metal salts and fuel in an exothermic reaction which leads to nanoparticles formation. pH value of solution and employed fuel system strongly affect production quality and single phase nanopowder can be synthesized by well monitoring these parameters. In this study nanocrystalline Yttrium Aluminum Garnet powders was Synthesized via sol-gel combustion process. The effects of pH value of solution and different systems of fuels on production procedure and grain size of final powders were investigated by FTIR, DTA\ TG, XRD, SEM and TEM. The results showed that with increasing the pH value of solution, the combustion process and formation temperature of single phase Yttrium Aluminum Garnet were increased. The sample with initial pH value yielded nanostructured Yttrium Aluminum Garnet powder with an average particle size of ~35.7 nm at 850C. With increasing pH value of solution, grain size and homogeneity of products were decreased. Investigating powders with different fuel systems showed that Urea itself could not develop proper conditions for synthesizing nanometeric powders and combining Polyvinyl Alcohol with that can improve conditions. Finally the results showed that Citric Acid and Glycine were proper fuels for synthesizing nanocrystalline Yttrium Aluminum Garnet at 850 and 1100C.
