    , Article Physica E: Low-Dimensional Systems and Nanostructures ; Volume 21, Issue 1 , 2004 , Pages 96-102 ; 13869477 (ISSN) Taghavinia, N ; Yao, T ; Sharif University of Technology
    2004
    Abstract
Growing nanocrystals in a matrix is a way to have separate, non-agglomerated nanoparticles, which are surface passivated and stabilized against environmental attacks. To create nanocrystals of the desired size and properties in a matrix, it is required that the growth parameters are properly tuned. In this work, we study the growth parameters for ZnS nanocrystals in an SiO2 matrix. Samples were prepared by cosputtering of SiO 2 and ZnS on a silica substrate, followed by annealing at different temperatures. Two categories of samples with low-content ZnS (4 mol%) and high-content ZnS (15 mol%) were examined. In the low-content samples, ZnS nanocrystals are not formed below 900°C annealing...

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering B: Solid-State Materials for Advanced Technology ; Volume 128, Issue 1-3 , 2006 , Pages 53-57 ; 09215107 (ISSN) Sadrnezhaad, S. K ; Vaezi, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
The effect of one of the surfactants such as Tiron, a compound based on the benzene molecule, on the morphology and chemical composition of zinc oxide deposits, produced from a zinc complex solution using two-stage chemical deposition (TSCD) technique, has been investigated. TSCD technique is a novel and simple chemical route for the deposition of ZnO film from aqueous solution. Zinc oxide films deposited on high purity alumina (HPA) as a substrate. The results show that the addition of Tiron changes the surface morphology and causes to form the fine-grained structure. With a dense and nodular-shape appearance, the film produced from the precursor of zinc complex-containing Tiron, is...

Zinc ferrite spinel-graphene in magneto-photothermal therapy of cancer

    , Article Journal of Materials Chemistry B ; Vol. 2, Issue. 21 , 2014 , p. 3306-3314 Akhavan, O ; Meidanchi, A ; Ghaderi, E ; Khoei, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A magneto-photothermal therapy for cancer (in vitro photothermal therapy of prostate cancer cells and in vivo photothermal therapy of human glioblastoma tumors in the presence of an external magnetic field) was developed using superparamagnetic zinc ferrite spinel (ZnFe2O4)-reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanostructures (with various graphene contents). In vitro application of a low concentration (10 μg mL-1) of the ZnFe 2O4-rGO (20 wt%) nanostructures under a short time period (∼1 min) of near-infrared (NIR) irradiation (with a laser power of 7.5 W cm-2) resulted in an excellent destruction of the prostate cancer cells, in the presence of a magnetic field (∼1 Tesla) used for localizing the...

Superparamagnetic zinc ferrite spinel-graphene nanostructures for fast wastewater purification

    , Article Carbon ; Vol. 69 , April , 2014 , pp. 230-238 ; ISSN: 00086223 Meidanchi, A ; Akhavan, O ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Superparamagnetic ZnFe2O4/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composites containing ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles (with ∼5-20 nm sizes) attached onto rGO sheets (with ∼1 μm lateral dimensions) were synthesized by hydrothermal reaction method. By increasing the graphene content of the composite from 0 to 40 wt%, the size as well as the number of the ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles decreased and the saturated magnetization of the composites reduced from 10.2 to 1.8 emu/g, resulting in lower responses to external magnetic fields. Concerning this, the time needed for 90% separation of ZnFe2O4/rGO (40 wt%) composite from its solution (2 mg/mL in ethanol) was found 60 min in the presence of an external magnetic field (∼1...

Development and biomedical application of nanocomposites: In situ fabrication of ZnO-PbO nanocomposite through microwave method

    , Article Materials Technology ; Vol. 29, issue. 4 , July , 2014 , p. 227-231 Rajabi, A ; Aieneravaie, M ; Dorosti, V ; Sadrnezhaad, S. K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A novel nanocomposite of ZnO-PbO with flower-like nanostructure was fabricated from zinc acetate and lead nitrate as principle raw materials via an in situ process. The novelty of this study consists in the use of a common approach for fabricating of ZnO and PbO nanoparticles simultaneously. From these experiments the conclusion might be drawn that Zn(NH4) 2 4+ ions and Pb(OH)2 act as precursors for the nucleation and growth of ZnO and PbO respectively under microwave irradiation. The precursors formation were carried at two stages: reaction between zinc ions and lead nitrate with ammonium ion and hydroxide sodium respectively. The average crystalline size of Zno and PbO has been analysed by...

Hyperthermia-induced protein corona improves the therapeutic effects of zinc ferrite spinel-graphene sheets against cancer

    , Article RSC Advances ; Vol. 4, issue. 107 , 2014 , p. 62557-62565 Hajipour, M. J ; Akhavan, O ; Meidanchi, A ; Laurent, S ; Mahmoudi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Superparamagnetic zinc ferrite spinel-graphene nanostructures were synthesized as potential therapeutic agents in the magnetic targeted photothermal therapy of cancer and/or drug delivery. The global temperature of the solution and the local temperature at the nanoparticle (NP) surface determine the protein corona composition/content, which in turn affects the biological effects of NPs and the corresponding physiological responses. Therefore, it is rational to hypothesize that spinel-graphene nanostructures may have distinct protein corona compositions and contents, and therapeutic and toxic effects under laser irradiation. To assess this hypothesis, the effects of laser irradiation on the...

    Abstract
ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) and submicron aggregates (SMAs) were synthesized via a simple precipitation method by changing the amount of zinc acetate di-hydrate in absolute ethanol and synthesis time. Synthesized NPs and SMAs were characterized by FE-SEM, EDS, XRD, PL, and DRS and were used to fabricate dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The SMAs synthesized at moderate concentration (0.022 M) and with poly-dispersed distribution of the aggregates showed lower density of deep localized trap states as well as enhanced scattering features in comparison to NP-based electrode. As a result, power conversion efficiency (η) of about 2.56% with improved current density (Jsc) of 8.51 mA/cm2 were...

    Abstract
Branched hierarchical zinc oxide nanowires (BH-ZnO NWs) were fabricated successfully by a facile and rapid synthesis using two-step growth process. Initially, ZnO NWs have been prepared by anodizing zinc foil at room temperature and followed by annealing treatment. Then, the BH- ZnO NWs were grown on the ZnO NWs by a solution based method at very low temperature (31 oC). The BH- ZnO NWs with different aspect ratio were obtained by varying reaction time (0.5, 2, 5, 10 h). Photocatalytic activity of the samples was studied under both UV and visible light. The results indicated that the optimized BH-ZnO NWs (5 h) as a photocatalyst exhibited the highest photoactivity with about 3 times higher...

    Abstract
Zinc-rich ethyl silicate coatings are quite successful in protecting steel against corrosion under severe exposing conditions. In spite of providing excellent cathodic protection to steel structure after film curing, two-component zinc-rich ethyl silicate coatings have some limitations, one of which is inadequate shelf life as a result of in-can binder gelation. In this work, the preparation steps of ethyl silicate such as pre-hydrolysis, dehydration and organometallic reactions were surveyed and herein an approach towards understanding the cause and effect relationship of the use of ingredients is presented. The effects of water and catalytic acid dosages on gel time under accelerated...

    Abstract
Demand increasing for next generation portable and miniaturized electronics has aroused much interest to explore microscale and lightweight energy storage devices. Herein, we demonstrate successful development of flexible wire-shaped micro-supercapacitors (micro-SCs) based on novel CoNi2S4/E-NZP film@Cu wire electrode. The etched Ni-Zn-P (E-NZP) film was synthesized by directly deposition of NZP film on Cu wire, followed by a chemical etching process. Alkaline etching treatment provides a micro- and mesoporous structure with high surface area and facilitates the penetration of electrolyte ions into the electrode matrix. Then, CoNi2S4 nanosheets as electroactive material are electrochemically...

    Abstract
Ag2O particles were loaded on the surface of ZnCr-LDH via an anion-exchange precipitation approach by using privilege of the memory trace feature of the LDH-type materials. The structural properties of the resulted photocatalyst were explored by different spectroscopic and microscopic methods. The photocatalytic studies on acid black degradation ascertained that the prepared Ag2O/ZnCr-LDH nanocomposite represented an observably increased degradation performance of organic pollutants compared with pure Ag2O and ZnCr-LDH. This improved photocatalytic performance can be ascribed to the enhanced surface area, good order distributing of particles and effective charge carrier transfer and...

    Abstract
The influence of indium on the properties of Cu0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 nano ferrites synthesized by sol–gel auto-combustion technique was studied. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis demonstrated that pure and substituted ferrites possessed cubic spinel structure. The lattice parameter increases with the inclusion of In3+ for x ≤ 0.16 and decreases subsequently. A linear decrease in crystallite size was found as concentration of indium increased. X-ray density, strain, and dislocation density were increased as indium content increases. Hopping lengths as well as radii of A and B sites revealed increasing behavior up to x = 0.16 and decreased thereafter. The spectral bands indicated the formation of...
