    Modelling of the effect of operational parameters and concentration of some corrosion inhibitors on the corrosion of carbon steel

    Abstract
    Several corrosion inhibitors, such as, HEDP, sodium molybdate and zinc ions, were added to an aqueous corrosive media containing different concentrations chloride ions, and the corrosion rates (CRs) of carbon steel were measured at various temperatures. It was shown that, in the presence of more than 1,200 ppm of chloride ions, and temperatures greater than or equal to 42.5°C, the combination of HEDP, molybdate and zinc could not control the corrosion in a cooling water system. Then four different models were designed to represent the CR of carbon steel in presence of various corrosive parameters

    Abstract
    Growing nanocrystals in a matrix is a way to have separate, non-agglomerated nanoparticles, which are surface passivated and stabilized against environmental attacks. To create nanocrystals of the desired size and properties in a matrix, it is required that the growth parameters are properly tuned. In this work, we study the growth parameters for ZnS nanocrystals in an SiO2 matrix. Samples were prepared by cosputtering of SiO 2 and ZnS on a silica substrate, followed by annealing at different temperatures.     Abstract
    In this study, the Geocoat™ technology was used for the extraction of zinc from a mineral concentrate obtained from the Kooshk mine (Yazd, Iran) by a culture dominated by the mesophilic bacterium Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans in a packed column bioreactor. A low grade sphalerite ore was used as support for the concentrate coating. During the 100 days of leaching pH, Fe3+, Fetotal, microbial population density and zinc extraction were measured. The final zinc extraction from concentrate and low grade support was 97% and 78%, respectively, and it was found that leaching from the support does not proceed significantly before leaching from the coating is completed

    Efficient synthesis of protected and unprotected chlorohydrins has been achieved by ring opening of epoxides with acetyl/benzoyl chloride and TMSCl using a catalytic amount of ZnO as a reusable catalyst.     Abstract
    A series of bifunctional Cu-ZnO-ZrO2/H-Y catalysts of different compositions were prepared by coprecipitating sedimentation method and were characterized by surface area and XRD analyses. The catalytic performance in synthesis of tetrahydrofuran was evaluated and optimized in a three-phase slurry batch reactor. The experimental results showed that the appropriate ratio of Cu/ZnO in the hydrogenation catalyst was 50/45, for which the conversion of maleic anhydride (MA) and selectivity of tetrahydrofuran (THF) reached 100% and 46%, respectively, at 50 bar and 493 K after 6 h of operation.     The complexes of zinc tetraphenylporphyrin (ZnTPP) with the azacrown macrocycles bearing pyridine moiety (bp, 1p) as the axial ligand were synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR, 1H and 13C NMR, fluorescence, UV–Vis, together with TD DFT calculations. Solution study by employing 1H NMR spectroscopy for ZnTPPbenz and ZnTPPH complexes elucidated that the pyridine moiety was bonded through the fifth-coordination site on the zinc metal atom.     Abstract
    In this study the thermal calcination of two materials, high purity zinc carbonate hydroxide and the Calsimin zinc carbonate concentrate have been investigated. Isothermal studies have been performed on samples at different temperatures and times. Non-isothermal analysis has been carried out by TGA and DSC. It has been found that the calcination behaviour of both materials corresponds to the shrinking core model. The activation energy for the calcination of zinc carbonate hydroxide is found to be 88.7 kJ/mol, and that for the Calsimin sample is 97.3 kJ/mol. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

    Abstract
    Thermodynamics of extraction of Zn2+ from sulfuric acid media contacting to a mixture of DEHPA and MEHPA diluted with 80 wt% aromatic - aliphatic kerosene with a constant DEHPA to MEHPA ratio is investigated at different acidities, concentrations and temperatures. As a result, the extraction reaction is found to be endothermic with a zinc distribution factor that increases with increasing of the temperature, acidity of the solution and the concentration of the extradant. The mechanism of the extraction reaction is shown to be different for pH > 1 with that at pH <1. The pH of the aqueous media has also an important influence on progressing of the extraction reaction

    Abstract
    Zinc exists as smithsonite and hemimorphite in the lead flotation tailings from the Dandi mineral processing plant in north western Iran. In this research, zinc-rich tailings produced in the Dandi plant were characterized mineralogically and a leaching study was carried out to assess the effect of several parameters on the kinetics of zinc dissolution. Parameters studied included: sulfuric acid concentration, reaction time, temperature and slurry density. It was found that leaching is controlled by a single rate-controlling step with an activation energy of 23.5 kJ/mol.     Zinc oxide thin films were deposited on soda-lime glass substrates from an aqueous zinc- containing complex by two-stage chemical deposition (TSCD) method. Longmuir adsorption model showed that the adsorption of atoms on the surface of the substrate was typically physical. The relation between the fractional coverage, θ, with the equilibrium constant of the adsorption reaction was nonlinear indicating that the adsorption was non-ideal.     In this paper, a high-performance epoxy nanocomposite with dual active/barrier protection ability based on calcium zinc phosphate (CZP) nanopigment was fabricated. Then chemistry, morphology, and anti-corrosion ability of the commercial zinc phosphate (ZP) and CZP pigments were studied.     A novel nanocomposite of ZnO-PbO with flower-like nanostructure was fabricated from zinc acetate and lead nitrate as principle raw materials via an in situ process. The novelty of this study consists in the use of a common approach for fabricating of ZnO and PbO nanoparticles simultaneously. From these experiments the conclusion might be drawn that Zn(NH4) 2 4+ ions and Pb(OH)2 act as precursors for the nucleation and growth of ZnO and PbO respectively under microwave irradiation.
