    Abstract
An experimental investigation has been performed to realize thorough behavior of a vortex tube system. In this work attention has been focussed on the classification of the parameters affecting vortex tube operation. The effective parameters are divided into two different types, namely geometrical and thermo-physical ones. A reliable test rig has been designed and constructed to investigate the effect of geometrical parameters i.e. diameter and length of main tube, diameter of outlet orifice, shape of entrance nozzle. Thermo-physical parameters which have been designated and studied are inlet gas pressure, type of gas, cold gas mass ratio and moisture of inlet gas. The effects of these...

Numerical Investigation of Nitrogen Condensation in a Two-phase Vortex Tube

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mirjalili, Mohamad Reza (Author) ; Ghorbanian, Kaveh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The Ranque-Hilsch vortex tube (RHVT) has no moving parts through which a high-pressure fluid gains on rotational velocity by passing radially through the inlet nozzles and then enters the vortex chamber. Subsequently, the high-pressure fluid becomes divided into two relatively distinctive hot and cold axial flows. Today, while RHVT is of great industrial interest due to its simplicity in manufacturing and operation; however, the mechanism of energy dissociation, which is dominated by the complex coupled interaction of the viscous thermo-fluid characteristics and geometrical properties, is not fully understood and no clear theory has been proposed to explain the energy dissociation so far....

Experimental analysis of a Ranque-Hilsch vortex tube for optimizing nozzle numbers and diameter

    , Article Applied Thermal Engineering ; Volume 61, Issue 2 , 2013 , Pages 500-506 ; 13594311 (ISSN) Mohammadi, S ; Farhadi, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
A brass vortex tube with changeable parts is used to obtain the optimum nozzle intake numbers and diameter. The effects of inlet pressure and CF (cold fraction) are also investigated. Results illustrate that increasing the number of nozzles causes a temperature drop and the optimum nozzle diameter corresponds to quarter of vortex tube diameter. The distance between cold end orifice and nozzle intakes is investigated in this work and it is found that for a better performance, this distance should be decreased. A series of experiments conducted to investigate the CF effect on VT performance and an optimum amount for this parameter is found. A two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khazaali, Sadegh Khazaali (Author) ; Mazaheri, Karim (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The vortex tube is a simple device that injects compressed gas (air) tangentially into the vortex chamber through one or more injection nozzles. After entering, the flow becomes rotational and an axial cold flow goes towards the cold outlet and a peripheral hot flow goes towards the hot outlet. Besides all the different applications of the vortex tube, the main application of this device is cooling. Here, the goal is to optimize the geometry and physical conditions to improve the performance, which is done by using a commercial software and numerical analysis of a vortex tube to understand the flow physics and optimization. In this research, we use experimental and numerical data for...

    Abstract
The current study examines different arrangements of vortex tubes (VTs) to get higher performances for cooling and heating. The effects of thermo-physical parameters such as inlet feed temperature and inlet/outlet vortex tube pressure on generated temperature gradient are investigated. To estimate the cold outlet temperatures, the available equations in the literature are verified against our experimental data. Moreover, we propose a new equation to estimate the hot outlet temperature based on the upper limit of hot temperature (ULHT) and the lower limit of cold temperature (LLCT), verified with experimental data as well. Further, several arrangements are simulated to obtain the minimum cold...

    Abstract
The aim of this study is to survey the ability of vortex tube cascade for separating heavy components of a gas mixture. For this purpose, three vortex tubes based on previous experiences have been manufactured. Also, a helical double pipe heat exchanger has been designed and constructed. Because of the vortex tube’s ability in developing thermal separation, the effect of thermophysical parameters like feed’s temperature, inlet and outlet pressure of air on the thermal separation performance were evaluated. The recommended correlations for estimating outlet temperature of hot and cold flows, have been validated against experimental data. Moreover, various arrangements of vortex tubes to...

    Abstract
A 2D numerical investigation is performed to better understand the transient thermo-fluid processes in a vortex tube for a cold mass fraction equal to0.44. The results along the Ranque-Hilsch vortex tube reveal a close agreement with past numerical and experimental data. The distribution of axial, radial, and tangential velocities as well as the stagnation pressure and temperature are examined at different positions for different time steps. The results indicate that the tangential velocity is the most significant velocity component and dominates the heat transfer and energy conversion processes. In addition, it is evident that the core of the cold end experiences the highest pressure...

    Abstract
Most of the vehicle pollutants during emission tests are raised from catalyst inefficiency during cold start. Catalysts usually convert harmful emissions only when their temperature reaches around 250 °C to 350 °C. In this research, the vortex tube is implemented to recover the waste heat energy of exhaust gas during the cold start to improve catalyst heating. The experiments are conducted on the turbocharged direct-injection gasoline engine to extract the boundary conditions of numerical simulations. Numerical simulations are performed to evaluate the effects of different hot exhaust mass fractions on the flow regime and waste heat recovery. The results reveal that the level of turbulence...
