    Abstract
In this study, a new design of graded tubular scaffolds have been developed for the performance enhancement in vascular tissue engineering. The graded poly-L-lactide (PLLA) and gelatin fibrous scaffolds produced by electrospining were then characterized. The morphology, degradability, porosity, pore size and mechanical properties of four tubular scaffolds (graded PLLA/gelatin, layered PLLA/gelatin, PLLA and gelatin scaffolds) have been investigated. The tensile tests demonstrated that the mechanical strength and also the estimated burst pressure of the graded scaffolds were significantly increased in comparison with the layered and gelatin scaffolds. This new design, resulting in an increase...

Discrimination of bilateral finger photoplethysmogram responses to reactive hyperemia in diabetic and healthy subjects using a differential vascular model framework

    , Article Physiological Measurement ; Volume 34, Issue 5 , 2013 , Pages 513-525 ; 09673334 (ISSN) Keikhosravi, A ; Aghajani, H ; Zahedi, E ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Endothelial dysfunction assessment has received considerable attention due to its potential in early screening of cardiovascular diseases. Since the seminal work by Celermajer in flow-mediated dilation (FMD) based on B-mode ultrasound measurement of the brachial artery dilation following limb ischemia, many attempts have been made toward applying this method to clinical, non-invasive endothelial dysfunction assessment. One major obstacle toward achieving this objective has been the relative high cost of the required setup and skilled manpower. Such limitations have prompted the investigation of other non-invasively accessible signals such as the photoplethysmogram (PPG) in relation to FMD....

    Abstract
Dyslipidemia is considered to be one of the main heart risk factors, affecting the endothelial vascular function, which can be non-invasively investigated by ultrasound flow-mediated dilation (US-FMD). However, US-FMD comes at a high-cost and is operator-dependent. In this paper, the effect of dyslipidemia on the photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal recorded from collateral index fingers is investigated following a previous study where it was shown that results similar to that of US-FMD can be replicated by the PPG. Two groups, consisting of 30 healthy subjects free from any risk factors and 30 subjects who have only dyslipidemia as risk factor were respectively considered. The percent change in...

    Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases contribute to one third of the world's mortality and morbidity, therefore early cardiovascular disease diagnosis, treatment and monitoring has become an important market. Ideally, an early diagnosis device will need to be accurate, non-invasive, low cost and operator independent. Interestingly enough, there is a wide range of non-invasive devices available, but each with a different degree of accuracy and ease of use. In this paper, an attempt has been made to review commercially available technologies for non-invasive vascular screening. As stiffness index, reflection index, augmentation index, central aortic pressure are most commonly used to screen for vascular...

    Abstract
Microvascular anastomosis is a common part of many reconstructive and transplant surgical procedures. While venous anastomosis can be achieved using microvascular anastomotic coupling devices, surgical suturing is the main method for arterial anastomosis. Suture-based microanastomosis is time-consuming and challenging. Here, dissolvable sugar-based stents are fabricated as an assistive tool for facilitating surgical anastomosis. The nonbrittle sugar-based stent holds the vessels together during the procedure and are dissolved upon the restoration of the blood flow. The incorporation of sodium citrate minimizes the chance of thrombosis. The dissolution rate and the mechanical properties of...

    Abstract
Coronary angiography is a vital instrument to detect the prevailing of vascular diseases, and accurate vascular segmentation acts a crucial role for proper quantitative analysis of the vascular tree morphological features. Level set methods are popular for segmenting the coronary arteries, but their performance is related to suitable start-up and optimum setting of regulating parameters, essentially done manually. This research presents a novel fuzzy level set procedure with the objective of segmentation of the coronary artery tree in 2-D X-ray angiography as automatically. It is clever to clearly develop from the early segmentation with spatial fuzzy grouping. The adjusting parameters of...

Development of an Automatic Produnction and Growth of Kidney Vascular Structure based on Graph Grammar Methods

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Fozooni, Ali (Author) ; Bozorgmehry Boozarjomehry, Ramin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The kidney is one of the most complicated organs in terms of structure and physiology, in part because it is highly vascularized. Previous investigations have focused on specific characteristics like length and diameter. There are a few methods like those which are based on image processing techniques, that have been focused on all features as a unique structure. The clear drawback of these approaches is inability to justify growth and changes. Lindenmayer system (L-system) is parallel rewriting method and a type of graph grammars. L-system can justify growth and all characteristic changes and adopt itself to them. Parametric rewriting rules incorporating within physiological laws of the...

    Abstract
Efficient strategies to promote microvascularization in vascular tissue engineering, a central priority in regenerative medicine, are still scarce; nano- and micro-sized aggregates and spheres or beads harboring primitive microvascular beds are promising methods in vascular tissue engineering. Capillaries are the smallest type and in numerous blood vessels, which are distributed densely in cardiovascular system. To mimic this microvascular network, specific cell components and proangiogenic factors are required. Herein, advanced biofabrication methods in microvascular engineering, including extrusion-based and droplet-based bioprinting, Kenzan, and biogripper approaches, are deliberated with...

    Elsevier Ltd  2019
    Abstract
In this study, the influence of vascular bed comprising terminal arterial branches on heat transfer in a liver tumor exposed to high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is studied numerically. Also, the effect of vascular density on temperature distribution is investigated. A coupled set of acoustics, thermal, and fluid models is used to calculate the temperature distribution in the liver. The numerical model is established based on the Westervelt and bioheat equations along with the Navier-Stokes equations. Moreover, the acoustic streaming effect is included with Newtonian and non-Newtonian flow assumptions. It is found that in a vascular bed comprising terminal arterial branches, the...

    Abstract
Irregular hemodynamics affects the progression of various vascular diseases, such atherosclerosis or aneurysms. Despite the extensive hemodynamics studies on animal models, the inter-species differences between humans and animals hamper the translation of such findings. Recent advances in vascular tissue engineering and the suitability ofin vitromodels for interim analysis have increased the use ofin vitrohuman vascular tissue models. Although the effect of flow on endothelial cell (EC) pathophysiology and EC-flow interactions have been vastly studied in two-dimensional systems, they cannot be used to understand the effect of other micro- and macro-environmental parameters associated with...

    VEGF Isolation from Platelet Lysate

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sanaei, Reza (Author) ; Abdekhodaie, Mohammad Jafar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Platelet-rich plasma as a juvenile to the narrow repertoire of orthopedic medicine, has risen hope to attain a generic autologous regenerative formula for different conditions. Vast plethora of GFs, cytokines and chemokines has endowed PRP with excellent regenerative properties, however not all of them would favor different conditions. Vascular endothelial growth factor has been demonstrated to be involved in the progress of Osteoarthritis by amplifying the catabolic processes which deteriorate the extracellular matrix of cartilage. Though cumbersome, the result of eliminating VEGF from platelet lysate would be promising. VEGF isolation from platelet lysate requires selectivity. By employing...

    Abstract
Cardiovascular disease is considered as the most important cause of death in the world. The coronary vessels, with three main arteries, has quite important. Coronary angiography is still the most common modality for physicians to assess the severity of vessel narrowing or stenosis during percutaneous coronary intervention procedure. For this procedure, a thin, flexible tube called a catheter is put into a blood vessel in your arm, groin (upper thigh), or neck. The tube is threaded into your coronary arteries, and the dye is released into your bloodstream. X-ray pictures are taken while the dye is flowing through the coronary arteries. Physicians evaluate angiographic images visually with...

    Abstract
One of the chief kinds of receptors in cancer angiogenesis is the tyrosine kinase VEGFR-2. This target receptor is presented in both forms; active and inactive. adenosine triphosphate (ATP) residue is the location of deformational change from inactive to active form. Small molecule inhibitors have been designed for various forms of this receptor. In current study, the interaction of small molecular inhibitors including; Regorafenib, Cabozantinib and Thiosanib with dual VEGFR-2 receptor forms was investigated by molecular dynamics with Gromacs software. Cabozantinib and Regorafenib inhibitors had a lower binding energy in interaction with the inactive state however, Thiosanib inhibitors in...

    Abstract
Blood clotting and clot formation in damaged vessels are vital mechanisms of the body. Any disorder in performing this mechanism leads to various problems such as excessive bleeding or, on the contrary, causes vascular occlusion and diseases such as embolism. Due to the importance of this issue, extensive research has been done to understand this phenomenon and the factors affecting it. In this thesis, the effect of shear stress, coagulation factor concentration and wound location in coronary bifurcation on clot formation and growth and its interaction with velocity field is numerically investigated. Blood flow is modeled non-Newtonian with Carreau-Yasuda model. Various chemical species...

Simple and efficient method to measure vessel tortuosity

    , Article Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Computer and Knowledge Engineering, ICCKE 2013, Mashhad: Iran ; 2013 , Pages 219-222 ; 9781479920921 (ISBN) Pourreza, H. R ; Pourreza, M ; Banaee, T ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Retinal vessels tortuosity is one of the important signs of cardiovascular diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and hypertension. In this paper we present a simple and efficient algorithm to measure the grade of tortuosity in retinal images. This algorithm consists of four main steps, vessel detection, extracting vascular skeleton via thinning, detection of vessel crossovers and bifurcations and finally calculating local and global tortuosity. The last stage is based on a circular mask that is put on every skeleton point of retinal vessels. While the skeleton of vessel splits the circle in each position, the local tortuosity is considered to be the bigger to smaller area ratio. The proposed...

    Abstract
A stereolithography-based bioprinting platform for multimaterial fabrication of heterogeneous hydrogel constructs is presented. Dynamic patterning by a digital micromirror device, synchronized by a moving stage and a microfluidic device containing four on/off pneumatic valves, is used to create 3D constructs. The novel microfluidic device is capable of fast switching between different (cell-loaded) hydrogel bioinks, to achieve layer-by-layer multimaterial bioprinting. Compared to conventional stereolithography-based bioprinters, the system provides the unique advantage of multimaterial fabrication capability at high spatial resolution. To demonstrate the multimaterial capacity of this...

    Abstract
Small diameter vascular grafts (<6 mm) are highly demanded for patients suffering from severe occluded arteries to be used as a bypass or substituted conduit. Fabricating a graft with appropriate structural, mechanical and cell growth properties which has simultaneously anti-thrombogenic trait is a challenge nowadays. Here, we proposed a bilayer heparinized vascular graft that can mimic the structural and mechanical characteristics close to those of the native coronary artery by combining electrospinning and freeze drying methods. In this study, the inner layer was made by co-electrospinning of synthetic polymer, poly-caprolactone (PCL) and the natural polymer, gelatin (Gel). Also, heparin...
