    Attack Tolerance of Trust Management

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Niknafs, Mina (Author) ; Jalili, Rasoul (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Trust management is a new security solution for situations that there is not enough information about the members of a system. As other security solutions, trust management solutions are not secure against attacks and malicious behaviors. Collusion is one of the most destructive malicious behaviors in these systems. Colluders seek to unfairly affect the trust system. Most of the trust models are vulnerable against this malicious behavior or consider only a limited set of collusion scenarios to resist. Some other mitigation approaches are specific to a trust model and cannot be used by other models. One of the methods to implement trust is exploiting reputation. Reputation systems can be...

Towards a Method for Inferring Trust

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Akhoondi, Masoud (Author) ; Habibi, Jafar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
People usually use trust and reputation when they encounter uncertainty in the nature. Graphs are good tools to model and analysis of trust’s problems. If we show human and computer agents by graph’s nodes and trust values by its edges, in literature, the output graph is so-called Web of Trust. Most recently, there are three major research areas in which trust is studied. First area is policy-based trust which uses policies, digital signature and authentication methods. Second area is reputation-based trust which uses reputation and social network tools to estimate trust where past interactions or performance for an entity are combined to assess its future behavior. Third area is trust...

Trust modeling based on Capra cognitive framework

    , Article Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences ; Volume 32 , 2012 , Pages 197-203 ; 18770428 (ISSN) Mirzaie, K ; Fesharaki, M. N ; Daneshgarb, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Trust is needed to facilitate cooperation and delegation among agents in a multi-agent system. This paper proposes a trust model based on Capra cognitive framework. This framework explains social phenomena from the four perspectives of structure (agent), pattern (network), process, and meaning. We assume trust as "meaning" in the proposed model. Every agent has properties such as personality, responsibility, and specialty. Interaction among agents is based on friendship network. OODA, as a general process for decision making, is used for updating the trust in the simulation run

Leveraging User-Item Interactions for Trust Prediction

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Beigi, Ghazaleh (Author) ; Jalili, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Trust prediction, the ability to identify how much to trust to allocate an unknown user, is an important prerequisite toward the development of scalable on-line e-commerce communities. We are more likely to purchase an item from a seller on an e-commerce websites such as eBay or Amazon, if our trusted acquaintances have reported positive experiences with that seller in the past. Reviews from trusted users will carry more weight towards the purchasing decision than reviews from anonymous or unknown customers. Thus, these platforms must support computational mechanisms for propagating trust between users. One of the significant challenges in the trust prediction problem is the unprecedented...

Trust Seeking in Social Networks Based on Semantic Reasoning on Profiles

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Pourmand, Naeemeh (Author) ; Sadighi Moshkenani, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
With the development of social network sites and wide use of Social Networks, information security and confidence of its components, became more and more important and turned into subject of many studies and researches. Relationship based on trust besides increasing productivity reduces risk of information transmission to non-related people. Although in the real world, semantic relations are the main basics for trust, but the existing methods of trusting in current sites have less attention to this point. To reduce such issues, firstly this research is going to use an added semantic understanding on top of the social networks structure. To do so, there is an inference engine in addition to a...

Trust Inference in Social Networks Using Machine Learning Methods

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Dehghan Shirepaz, Samaneh (Author) ; Jalili, Rasool (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the main purposes of social networks is to share and exchange information. By rapid growth of social networks in Web and considering that the major part of the interactions occurs between unknown individuals; trust plays an important role in forming the relationship among users. On the other hand, with increase in malicious behavior in online communities, the ability to evaluate the trustworthiness of a person before interacting with him has an important effect on the users’ decisions. Trust inference is an approach to fulfill this requirement. Trust inference mechanism can be described as an algorithm that uses the existing trust relationships between users and propagates trust along...

    Uncertainty in probabilistic trust models

, Article Proceedings - International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications, AINA ; 2012 , Pages 511-517 ; 1550445X (ISSN) ; 9780769546513 (ISBN) Dorri Nogoorani, S ; Jalili, R ; IEEE Comput. Soc. Tech. Comm. Distrib. Process ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Computational models of trust try to transfer the concept of trust from the real to the virtual world. While such models have been widely investigated in the past decade, the uncertainty involved in trust computation has been overlooked in the literature. In this paper, uncertainty of probabilistic trust models is quantified using confidence intervals and its factors are determined through simulation. The results confirm the importance and highlight the amount of uncertainty in the Beta and HMM (Hidden Markov Model) trust models. In addition, an uncertainty-driven method is proposed which reduces the risk involved in the trust-based utility maximization according to uncertainty

A Semantic Web Model for Computing Trust in Research Social Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ziaie, Alireza (Author) ; Abolhassani, Hassan (Supervisor) ; Habibi, Jafar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Trust as a major part of human interactions, lets us take the risk of decision making in uncertain situations. In computer science trust has lots of applications, and is stated as the highest level in the Semantic Web Cake and one of the seven points of W3C consortium. Trust can be embedded into several different networks and Social networks. Regarding to the fact that rust is transitive and value of trust can be compound and different paths in trust graph has different properties; a trust framework can be formed to embed trust into different networks. This framework should define trust and distrust, certainty and uncertainty, context and trust propagation. Architecture of this general...

A non-monotone trust region algorithm for unconstrained optimization with dynamic reference iteration updates using filter

    , Article Optimization ; Volume 61, Issue 6 , 2012 , Pages 733-763 ; 02331934 (ISSN) Fatemi, M ; Mahdavi-Amiri, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
We present a non-monotone trust region algorithm for unconstrained optimization. Using the filter technique of Fletcher and Leyffer, we introduce a new filter acceptance criterion and use it to define reference iterations dynamically. In contrast with the early filter criteria, the new criterion ensures that the size of the filter is finite. We also show a correlation between problem dimension and the filter size. We prove the global convergence of the proposed algorithm to first- and second-order critical points under suitable assumptions. It is significant that the global convergence analysis does not require the common assumption of monotonicity of the sequence of objective function...

Uncertainty in trust: A risk-aware approach

    , Article International Journal of Uncertainty, Fuzziness and Knowlege-Based Systems ; Volume 24, Issue 5 , 2016 , Pages 703-737 ; 02184885 (ISSN) Dorri Nogoorani, S ; Jalili, R ; Sharif University of Technology
World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte Ltd  2016
    Abstract
Uncertainty and its imposed risk have significant impacts on decision-making. However, both are disregarded in many trust-based applications. In this paper, we propose a risk-aware approach to explicitly take uncertainty of trust and its effects into account. Our approach consists of a trust, a confidence, and a risk model. We do not prescribe a specific trust model, and any probabilistic trust model can be empowered by our approach. The confidence model calculates the uncertainty of the trust model in the form of a confidence interval, and is independent of the inner-workings of the trust model. This interval is used by the utility-based risk model which assesses the effects of uncertainty...

FeedbackTrust: Using feedback effects in trust-based recommendation systems

    , Article 3rd ACM Conference on Recommender Systems, RecSys'09, New York, NY, 23 October 2009 through 25 October 2009 ; 2009 , Pages 269-272 ; 9781605584355 (ISBN) Moghaddam, S ; Jamali, M ; Ester, M ; Habibi, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
With the advent of online social networks, the trust-based approach to recommendation has emerged which exploits the trust network among users and makes recommendations based on the ratings of trusted users in the network. In this paper, we introduce a two dimensional trust model which dynamically gets updated based on users's feedbacks, in contrast to static trust values in current trust models. Explorability measures the extent to which a user can rely on recommendations returned by the social network of a trusted user. Dependability represents the extent to which a user's own ratings can be trusted by users trusting him directly and indirectly. We propose a method to learn the values of...

Factors influencing adoption of e-payment systems: an empirical study on Iranian customers

    , Article Information Systems and e-Business Management ; Volume 15, Issue 1 , 2017 , Pages 89-116 ; 16179846 (ISSN) Barkhordari, M ; Nourollah, Z ; Mashayekhi, H ; Mashayekhi, Y ; Ahangar, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Internet technology has influenced the banking systems because of its capability to enhance performance of financial operations. A major concern of Internet banking systems is the customers’ perception of security and trust. This study presents an experimental investigation on important factors influencing trust in e-payments systems in Iran. A set of potentially determinant factors of trust is developed and organized in three major groups: technical and transaction procedures, access to security guidelines, and usability. The direct effect of the factors on perceived trust, along with their indirect effect through perceived security, is evaluated in an empirical study. The data are...

A robust zero-watermarking scheme using Canny edge detector

    , Article International Journal of Electronic Security and Digital Forensics ; Volume 5, Issue 1 , 2013 , Pages 25-44 ; 1751911X (ISSN) Shakeri, M ; Jamzad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
By expansion of digital multimedia and networking technology, the problem of ownership protection has become increasingly important. Digital watermarking is an efficient way for copyright protection of digital images. Traditional watermarking techniques degrade the quality of host image by embedding a watermark logo. Facing this problem, a new watermarking approach called zero-watermarking has been proposed. In zero-watermarking methods, the watermark does not require to be embedded into the protected image but it uses both the watermark and the protected image to generate a verification map which is registered to a trusted authority for further protection. In this paper we propose a robust...

Implementation of a Retrospective Trust-Region Method for Unconstrained Optimization

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rezapour, Mostafa (Author) ; Mahdavi Amiri, Nezamoddin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
We explain a new trust region algorithm for solving unconstrained optimization problems where the redius update is computed using the model information at the current iterate rather than at the preceding one, recently proposed by Bastin, Malmedy, Mouffe, Toint and Tomanos. Then we discuss a modification mixing the concepts of nonmonotone trust region, line search and internal doubling. We use line search to finds a point that satisfies the Wolfe conditions. After that, we explain a new trust region algorithm for solving unconstrained optimization problems where simultaneously satisfies the quasi-Newton condition at each iteration and maintains a positive-definite approximation to the Hessian...

Investigating the Factors Influencing Intention to Trust in Classified Ads E-Commerce

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Haj Hashemi, Shayan (Author) ; Kiamehr, Mahdi (Supervisor) ; Khalili Nasr, Arash (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Classified ads are one of the first E-Commerce formed after the introduction of the internet to the world which is still popular. Divar is one of the main online classified ads and thousands of transactions are happening daily. The transaction of demandant and supplier happens in a risky relation that needs trust to facilitate this transaction. In this research, we are trying to study trust models in the context of C2C E-commerce. As there are no structural assurance and feedback mechanisms in Divar, we decide to study the initial trust of members due to a lack of information from each other. In this research, we gather data from 385 participants by an online questionnaire. The results show...

A trust and reputation-based access control model for virtual organizations

    , Article 2012 9th International ISC Conference on Information Security and Cryptology, ISCISC 2012, 13 September 02012 through 14 September 2012 ; September , 2012 , Pages 121-127 ; 9781467323864 (ISBN) Arasteh, M ; Amini, M ; Jalili, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Virtual organization (VO) is aimed to provide inter-organizational collaborations. Constructing a VO necessitates provision of security and access control requirements which cannot be satisfied using the traditional access control models. This is basically due to special features of VOs; such as temporality, unknown users, and diverse resources. In this paper, after expressing our assumption on a framework for VOs; the concept of organizational trust and reputation is used to establish an access control model for VOs. Each member of an organization inherits its organizational reputation. Resource providers announce the behavior of their interacting users to their organization manager....

Investigating the Factors Influencing the Trust to Mobile Banking Services

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bakhshi, Fatemeh (Author) ; Kiamehr, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Although electronic banking service has been introduced in Iran for more than a decade، today half of the people who go to the physical bank branches are the ones can do their affairs via e-banking. The banks’ managers attribute the main reason for these unnecessary travels to insufficient trust towards e-banking systems. One of the important tools in this regard is mobile banking which is prevailing around the world، however it has not prevailed enough in Iran. This research has tried to investigate the cognitive and non-cognitive dimensions of trust to mobile banking. The data for this research has been collected from users of mobile bank service who have filled the online research...

The Relationship between Employees’ Trust in Their Managers and Performance Management Effectiveness

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rabbani, Mohammad Mahdi (Author) ; Alavi, Babak (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Several studies in the field of performance management have paid attention to the effect of systemic and instrumental factors on the effectiveness of performance management system. However, the impact of communication and relational factors has received less attention. Furthermore, it seems that similar approach has been used in organizations for considering systemic factors in designing performance management systems rather than human factors. The goal of this research was to study the relationship between employees' trust in their manager as an relational variable with the effectiveness of performance management system and to compare this relationship with the relationship between the...

Correctness verification in database outsourcing: A trust-based fake tuples approach

, Article Lecture Notes in Computer Science (including subseries Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence and Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics) ; Volume 7671 LNCS , 2012 , Pages 343-351 ; 03029743 (ISSN) ; 9783642351297 (ISBN) Ghasemi, S ; Noferesti, M ; Hadavi, M. Abstract
An important security challenge in database outsourcing scenarios is the correctness verification of query results. The proposed approaches in the literature, impose high overhead on both the service provider and specially the clients. In this paper, we propose the Trust-Based Fake Tuples approach to audit the correctness of query results. In this approach, some fake tuples are included among the real ones in order to verify the correctness of the results. The experience learnt from past results is used in this paper to evaluate the trust toward the service provider. This trust value is used to tune the number of fake tuples and subsequently the imposed overhead. As the trust value toward...

Towards a model for inferring trust in heterogeneous social networks

    , Article 2nd Asia International Conference on Modelling and Simulation, AMS 2008, Kuala Lumpur, 13 May 2008 through 15 May 2008 ; 2008 , Pages 52-58 ; 9780769531366 (ISBN) Akhoondi, M ; Habibi, J ; Sayyadi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
People usually use trust and reputation to cope with uncertainty which exists in the nature and routines. The existing approaches for inferring trust rely on homogeneous relations. In other words, trust is just inferred by a homogeneous relation. In this paper, we present a new model for inferring trust using heterogeneous social networks; we use relation extraction to make a trust relation from the other relation such as friendship and the college relation and then introduced an algorithm to infer trust using extracted relation. In order to get higher performance, we extend relation extraction problem by proposing a genetic algorithm. This algorithm is more scalable, interpretable and...
