    Effect of metal oxide based TiO2 nanoparticles on anaerobic digestion process of lignocellulosic substrate

    Abstract
    Lignocellulosic materials are recalcitrant to bioconversion, due to their rigid physiochemical structure. In this work, the effects of Fe2O3–TiO2 and NiO–TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) and FeCl3 and NiCl2 salts, on the anaerobic digestion (AD) of wheat straw have been investigated. For this purpose, metal oxide-TiO2 NPs were synthesized and fully characterized. Results showed that addition of 0.252 mg of NiO–TiO2/g total solids (TS) to batch assays resulted in increase of soluble chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 67% increase in volatile fatty acids (VFAs) concentration compared to control tests during the first 4 days of experiments.     Abstract
    Sufficient quantity of trace metals is essential for a well performing anaerobic digestion (AD) process. Among the essential trace elements in active sites of multiple important enzymes for AD are iron and nickel ions. In the present study, iron and nickel in the form of Fe2O3 and NiO were coated on TiO2 nanoparticles to be used in batch and continuous operation mode.     This work describes a novel Fe3O4@SiO2@polypyrrole magnetic nanocomposite and its application in the preconcentration of Cd(ii) and Ni(ii) ions. The parameters affecting the preconcentration procedure were optimised by a Box-Behnken design using response surface methodology. Three variables (extraction time, magnetic sorbent amount, and pH) were selected as the main factors affecting the sorption step, while four variables (type, volume and concentration of the eluent, and elution time) were selected as the main factors in the optimisation study of the elution step.     Abstract
    Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy and subsequent acoustic response during microplasma formation are employed to identify cancerous human breast tissues. The characteristic optical emissions identify Ca, Na, and Mg rich species in cancerous tissues compared to those of healthy ones. Furthermore, we show that the characteristic parameters of the microplasma, generated on the unhealthy tissues, are elevated. We report higher decibel audio signals emanating from laser induced microplasma and a subsequent audio blueshift for malignant tissues.     The main goal of this research is to use the biomass productivity, carbohydrate content, and carbohydrate productivity as useful responses for optimization of macronutrients concentrations (K2HPO4, NaHCO3, and NaNO3) in cultivation of Spirulina microalgae as a feedstock for bioethanol production.     In this study, the impacts of salinity, ion type, and aging process were investigated on coalescence and spreading of crude oil interfaces (including an oil droplet and an oil film) under gravity, through drop rest time measurement techniques, aided by an image analysis system. Three different salt solutions of NaCl, Na2SO4, and MgCl2 were studied at different ionic strengths, ranged from 1% to 150% of Persian Gulf seawater ionic strength. According to the results, aging the oil droplet in the brine increased the interfacial rigidity.     Abstract
    In the present work, we investigated the characteristics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and metal(loid)s in indoor/outdoor PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 in a retirement home and a school dormitory in Tehran from May 2012 to May 2013. The results indicated that the annual levels of indoor and outdoor PM10 and PM2.5 were much higher than the guidelines issued by the World Health Organization (WHO). The most abundant detected metal(loid)s in PM were Si, Fe, Zn, Al, and Pb. We found higher percentages of metal(loid)s in smaller size fractions of PM.
