Role of different compatibilizing approaches on the microstructure and mechanical properties of polypropylene/talc composites

    , Article AIP Conference Proceedings ; Vol. 1593, issue , 15- 19 July , 2014 , pp. 428-431 ; ISSN: 0094243X Homayounfar, S. Z ; Bagheri, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Since in a highly filled polymer, a major problem arises from non-uniformity of properties due to the poor dispersion of filler, the application of coupling agents have been directed to overcome this problem and also to enhance the mechanical performance of the composites by improving the adhesion at the interface. In this study, a comparison between two major coupling approaches is conducted: 1) Using PPgMA as a kind of compatibilizer which changes the nature of the matrix, 2) Using titanate coupling agent which takes action at the interface and reacts with hydroxyl groups at the inorganic filler surface, resulting in the formation of monomolecular layer on the inorganic surface to increase...

    Abstract
A near fully dense mullite-TiB2-CNTs hybrid composite was prepared successfully trough spark plasma sintering. 1 wt%CNT and 10 wt%TiB2 were mixed with nano-sized mullite powders using a high energy mixer mill. Spark plasma sintering was carried out at 1350 °C under the primary and final pressure of 10 MPa and 30 MPa, respectively. XRD results showed mullite and TiB2 as dominant crystalline phases accompanied by tiny peaks of alumina. The microstructure of prepared composites demonstrated uniform distribution of TiB2 reinforcements in mullite matrix without any pores and porosities as a result of near fully densified spark plasma sintered composite. The fracture surface of composite revealed...

    Abstract
Structural, half-metallic, magneto-optic, and thermoelectric properties of CrTiZ (Z = As, P) half-Heusleres compounds are investigated based on density functional theory. These compounds have mechanical stability in the ferromagnetic state with a high bulk modulus. They are often half-metallic with a large and integer magnetic moment and are very attractive in spintronics, magneto-optics applications. The magnetic moments of CrTiAs and CrTiP were 2.9865 μB and 3.00 μB, respectively, which were attributed to their ferromagnetic phase. Additionally, the positive sign of the phonon branches indicates the dynamic stability of these compounds. Applying both GGA and mBJ approximations, CrTiAs and...

    Abstract
Titanium carbonated hydroxyapatite (Ti/CHA) nanobiocomposites have extensive biological applications due to the excellent biocompatibility and similar characteristics to the human bone. Ti/CHA nanobiocomposite has good biological properties but it suffer from diverse characteristics especially in hardness, Young's modulus, apparent porosity and relative density. This investigation is an attempt to propose the predictive models using gene expression programming (GEP) to estimate these characteristics. In this regards, GEP is used to model and compare the effect of practical variables including pressure, Ti/CHA contents and sintering temperature on their monitored properties. To achieve this...

    Abstract
As a refractory ceramic, the thermal instability of aluminium titanate (AT or Al2TiO5) has been in the crosshairs of research works in recent years. The studies have indicated that different parameters such as atmosphere, grain size, additives, oxygen pressure, and synthesis method can bilaterally affect the thermal decomposition of AT ceramic and resultant physicomechanical properties. In the present study, the AT nanostructure was synthesized by a citrate sol-gel method and influence of nanostructuring nature on its thermal instability and reaction pathway was explored in some details. It was shown that the reduction of grain size down to 30 nm can destabilize AT, so that the reaction...

    Abstract
Synthesizing efficient electrode materials for water splitting and supercapacitors is essential for developing clean electrochemical energy conversion/storage devices. In the present work, we report the construction of a ruthenium cobalt oxide (RuCo2O4)/Ti3C2Tx MXene hybrid by electrophoretic deposition of Ti3C2Tx MXene on nickel foam (NF) followed by RuCo2O4 nanostructure growth through an electrodeposition process. Owing to the strong interactions between RuCo2O4 and Ti3C2Tx sheets, which are verified by density functional theory (DFT)-based simulations, RuCo2O4/Ti3C2Tx MXene@NF can serve as a bifunctional electrode for both water splitting and supercapacitor applications. This electrode...

    Abstract
Microscale, flexible, and lightweight electrodes are of interest for the generation of light and miniaturized energy storage systems such as microsupercapacitors. Wire or fiber-shaped electrodes can be considered as potential candidates for microsupercapacitor fabrication. Herein, a facile strategy for the preparation of high electrochemical performance fiber-shaped microsupercapacitors based on Ni(OH)2-Ni-Ti3C2 film on a copper wire (CW) electrode is presented. We employed a porous cauliflower-like Ni-Ti3C2 MXene film as the supporting scaffold to bridge a Ni(OH)2 active substance with a Cu wire current collector. This hierarchical structure supplies a high surface area, many electroactive...

    Abstract
The thermal decomposition of Aluminum Titanate in exposure to pure Aluminum was examined both in powder and in bulk form. Optical microscopy, FE-SEM, XRD, DSC and TGA examinations were conducted to take the possible chemical reactions between Aluminum Titanate and Al into consideration. It was found that as Aluminum Titanate particles are exposed to Al matrix, the thermal stability of Aluminum Titanate is degraded and its decomposition temperature is reduced from 850°C to 550°C. Also, the chemical reactions between Aluminum Titanate and Al start along the interfaces, and the reaction products, i.e. Al3Ti, Al2O3, TiO2 and O2 gas are left there. A mechanism was suggested to describe the...

The results of X-ray diffraction analysis, field-emission scanning electron microscopy and differential thermal analysis showed that the synthetic products benefit a nanostructured nature with a grain size less than 70 nm. The optimal values for time and temperature at which a roughly pure AT is attained were determined as 2 h and 900 C, respectively. It was found that the sol gel precursor bears an amorphous structure till 700 C and begins to be crystallized to alumina, anatase and AT...

    Abstract
Titanium nitride/graphene nanocomposite as an anode material of lithium ion batteries has been fabricated through the reaction of TiCl4 and NaN3 in supercritical benzene medium followed by ammonia treating at 1000 °C for 10 h. The synthesized TiN/G nanocomposite depicts rate-dependent behavior in such a way that it shows specific capacity of 115 mAh g−1 when is cycled at higher rate (1.6 C) while it shows 76 mAh g−1 when is cycled initially at lower rate (0.2 C) and is subsequently subjected to higher rate (1.6 C). Moreover, TiN/G anode demonstrates capacity retention of 112%, 100%, and 70% after 250 cycles at charge/discharge rates of 1.6, 0.7, and 0.2 C, respectively. This unusual behavior...

    , Article Progress in Reaction Kinetics and Mechanism ; Volume 41, Issue 1 , 2016 , Pages 57-66 ; 14686783 (ISSN) Rahman Setayesh, S ; Abolhasani, E ; Ghasemi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Science Reviews 2000 Ltd  2016
    Abstract
TiO2, transition metal (Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn)- and aluminum-doped TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by the sol-gel technique. The sulfated catalysts were prepared by the impregnation method with H2SO4 solution. The catalysts were characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET surface area measurement, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) techniques. The sulfate content of the metal-incorporated samples was considerably higher than for SO4 2-/TiO2. The metal doping brought about a considerable reduction in the extent of sulfate loss from the catalyst surface due to the wide dispersion on the surface. The SO4 2-/TiO2 and SO4 2-/M/TiO2...

    Abstract
Ni-TiN nanocomposite coatings were prepared by using electrochemical deposition in a Watt's bath containing TiN particles to increase the hardness of Ni. The effects of deposition current density, electrolyte agitation speed and the number of particles in the solution on the amount of incorporated particles in the coating process were investigated. The optimum deposition current density of 4 A dm-2 and agitation speed of 450 rpm were obtained. The effect of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) anionic surfactant on the amount of particles in the coatings was investigated. It was observed that the maximum amount of incorporated particles, with a value of 7.5% by volume, was created in the current...

Influence of energy band alignment in mixed crystalline TiO2 nanotube arrays: Good for photocatalysis, bad for electron transfer

    , Article Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics ; Volume 50, Issue 50 , 2017 ; 00223727 (ISSN) Mohammadpour, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Despite the wide application ranges of TiO2, the precise explanation of the charge transport dynamic through a mixed crystal phase of this semiconductor has remained elusive. Here, in this research, mixed-phase TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNTAs) consisting of anatase and 0-15% rutile phases has been formed through various annealing processes and employed as a photoelectrode of a photovoltaic cell. Wide ranges of optoelectronic experiments have been employed to explore the band alignment position, as well as the depth and density of trap states in TNTAs. Short circuit potential, as well as open circuit potential measurements specified that the band alignment of more than 0.2 eV exists between the...

Role of nitrogen doping at the surface of titanium nitride thin films towards capacitive charge storage enhancement

    , Article Journal of Power Sources ; Volume 359 , 2017 , Pages 349-354 ; 03787753 (ISSN) Achour, A ; Chaker, M ; Achour, H ; Arman, A ; Islam, M ; Mardani, M ; Boujtita, M ; Le Brizoual, L ; Djouadi, M. A ; Brousse, T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
We recently reported an impressive cycling stability (over 20,000 cycles) of titanium nitride (TiN) electrodes with high specific capacitance. It is anticipated that nitrogen (β−N) doping in the oxidized surface of TiN film plays a crucial role in charge storage mechanism and stability of this material. In this work, we offer an evidence on the effect of β−N doping on improvement in specific capacitance of vacuum annealed TiN thin films. The annealing of the TiN films leads to the diffusion of the excess β−N from sub-surface to oxidized TiN film surface without further oxidation of the electrode surface. We demonstrate an increase in the TiN areal capacitance upon an increase in the amount...

Influence of additives on the morphology of PVDF membranes based on phase diagram: thermodynamic and experimental study

    Abstract
In the present study, the morphology of asymmetric poly(vinylidene fluoride) blend membranes which were prepared by the phase inversion method is rationalized by comparing two non-dimensional number represent thermodynamic and kinetic properties of the prepared membrane. These two parameters change phase diagram and demixing rate between solvent and nonsolvent. TiO2 nanoparticles and polyvinylpyrrolidone were used as additives. Hansen solubility parameters of the components are calculated by Van Krevelen method. Furthermore, kinetic and thermodynamic properties of the prepared solutions are determined by drawing phase diagrams and controlling mass transfer rate during precipitation of...

    Abstract
To compensate for drag increment due to the addition of nanoparticles to heat-transfer fluids, it seems that one could add drag reducer polymeric agents to these fluids. So, in this work, experiments were carried out for solutions of two types of polyacrylamide (FLOPAAM 3330S and FLOPAAM 3630S) at three distinct concentrations (25, 40, and 55 ppm), and TiO2-water nanofluid at concentrations of 0.015, 0.02, 0.025, and 0.03 L/L. The steady state turbulent convective heat transfer and the friction factor of the suspension of TiO2 in a dilute solution of very high molecular weight, polyacrylamide (hybrid fluid), in a coiled tube were analyzed. Experimental measurements were carried out from a...
