    2006
    Abstract
The effect of the superconductivity transition on the thermal crosstalk in YBa 2Cu 3O 7-x, edge-transition bolometer arrays is investigated for DC to midrange modulation frequency infrared radiation. The bolometers in the arrays were designed with various distances on SrTiO 3 (100) substrates. We have observed a change in the thermal crosstalk between neighbor devices through the superconductivity transition temperature range. Superconductivity transition dependence of the thermal coupling between the devices was measured by utilizing the thermal conductance measurement methods developed for the bulk material. The knee points in the magnitude of the response versus modulation frequency...

Experimental and Theoretical Study of the Effect of Moisture on Methane Adsorption and Desorption by Activated Carbon at 273.5 K

    , Article Journal of Natural Gas Chemistry ; Volume 16, Issue 1 , 2007 , Pages 22-30 ; 10039953 (ISSN) Farzad, S ; Taghikhani, V ; Ghotbi, C ; Aminshahidi, B ; Lay, E. N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
Adsorption and desorption of methane by activated carbon (AC) at constant temperature and at various pressures were investigated. The effect of moisture was also studied. A volumetric method was used, up to 40 bar, at a temperature of 273.5 K. Results of a dry AC sample were compared with those obtained from a moist sample and two different ACs with different physical and surface properties were used. As expected, the results showed that the existence of moisture, trapped in the AC pores, could lead to a decrease in the amount of methane adsorbed and a decrease in the amount of methane delivered during desorption. To model the experimental results, a large variety of adsorption isotherms...

On the prediction of shrinkage defects by thermal criterion functions

    , Article International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology ; Vol. 74, issue. 1-4 , Jun , 2014 , p. 569-579 Tavakoli, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The goal of the present study is to predict the formation of solidification induced defects in castings by thermal criteria functions. In a criterion function method, the heat transfer equation is firstly solved, and then the susceptibility of defect formation at every point in the casting is predicted by computing a local function, criterion function, using results of the thermal analysis. In the first part of the paper, some famous criteria functions, in particular, the Pellini and Niyama criteria, are analyzed and their shortcomings are discussed in details. Then, a new criterion function is suggested to decrease the shape-dependency issue of the former criteria. The feasibility of the...

Transient growth of a micro-void in an infinite medium under thermal load with modified Zerilli–Armstrong model

    , Article Acta Mechanica ; Volume 227, Issue 4 , 2016 , Pages 943-953 ; 00015970 (ISSN) Baghani, M ; Eskandari, A. H ; Zakerzadeh, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, the transient growth of a spherical micro-void under remote thermal load in an infinite medium is investigated. After developing the governing equations in the problem domain, the coupled nonlinear set of equations is solved through a numerical scheme. It is shown that a small cavity can grow rapidly as the temperature increases in a remote distance and may damage the material containing preexisting micro-voids. Conducting a transient thermal analysis simultaneously with a structural one reveals that the material may experience a peak in the radial stress distribution, which is five times larger compared to the steady-state one, and shows the importance of employing a...

Developing consistent inlet thermal boundary condition in micro/nano scale channels with heat transfer

    , Article 1st ASME Micro/Nanoscale Heat Transfer International Conference, MNHT08, Tainan, 6 January 2008 through 9 January 2008 ; Volume Parts A and B , 2008 , Pages 691-700 ; 0791842924 (ISBN); 9780791842928 (ISBN) Darbandi, M ; Vakilipour, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
In this work, we present a more realistic inlet boundary condition to simulate compressible and incompressible flows through micro and nano channels considering consistent momentum and heat transfer specifications there. At solid walls, a constant wall temperature with suitable jump is applied as the wall thermal boundary condition; however, two types of thermal inlet boundary conditions are investigated at the inlet. We firstly examine the classical inlet boundary condition, which specifies a uniform temperature distribution right at the real inlet. Alternatively, we apply the same boundary condition but at a fictitious place far upstream of the real channel inlet. To validate our results,...

    , Article 1st ASME Micro/Nanoscale Heat Transfer International Conference, MNHT08, Tainan, 6 January 2008 through 9 January 2008 ; Volume Parts A and B , 2008 , Pages 1299-1307 ; 0791842924 (ISBN); 9780791842928 (ISBN) Darbandi, M ; Vakilipour, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
In this work, we extend a numerical tool capable of solving compressible and incompressible gas flows to study the momentum and heat transfer rates in micro/nano channels with high aspect ratio (L/H = 8000), where the compressibility effect is dominant. The constant heat flux thermal boundary condition is firstly applied at the wall. Next, the flow regime is extended to the early transition regime employing a high order slip velocity boundary condition based on the kinetic theory assumptions. The accuracy of the present results in the slip flow regimes is evaluated against other available theoretical and experimental results. The thermal and compressibility effects on the pressure and...

Design and analysis of a novel two DOF thermal micromanipulator

    , Article 2011 IEEE International Conference on Mechatronics, ICM 2011 - Proceedings ; 2011 , pp. 654-659 ; ISBN: 9781612849836 Pourzand, H ; Ghaemi, R ; Alasty, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, a novel thermal microactuator is designed which is capable of producing bi-directional lateral and rotational output and one of its applications as a two DOF micromanipulator is shown. Also, by carefully choosing the doping level, temperature distribution is determined by considering the dependency of silicon's resistivity and conductivity to temperature. Using variable separation method an equation in terms of elliptic integrals is reached and after imposing boundary conditions the exact temperature distribution is obtained numerically. Currents at each branch is updated due to the last temperature distribution and this process is repeated several times until the final...

    Abstract
In this work, a three-dimensional model has been proposed to predict temperature distribution and weld-pool shape during dissimilar arc welding of low-carbon steel (CK4) and ferritic stainless steel (AISI 409). The model has been developed using the finite-element software ANSYS, while in the analysis, the effects of process parameters, as well as dilution, in the weld pool have been considered. To verify the predictions, welding experiments were conducted under different welding conditions, and the model results were then compared with the measured weld-pool geometry; a reasonable consistency was observed

    , Article Meccanica ; Volume 45, Issue 3 , June , 2010 , Pages 305-318 ; 00256455 (ISSN) Azadi, M ; Shariyat, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
An algorithm for investigation of nonlinear systems by the transfinite element method is presented. Basically, the transformation techniques have been developed for linear systems. Nonlinear transient heat transfer of a thick FGM cylinder with temperature-dependent material properties is investigated in the present paper to clarify the proposed algorithm. Two main novelties of the present research are: (1) incorporating the temperature-dependency of the material properties in the thermal analysis which lead to highly non-linear governing equations and (2) proposing an updating numerical transfinite element procedure to solve the resulted highly nonlinear governing equations. To reduce the...

    Abstract
Weak mechanical possession is one of the limiting factors in application of hydrogels. To modify this inherent disadvantage, different approaches have been studied including synthesizing interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) and nanocomposite hydrogels. So, this study has focused on preparation of a novel full-IPN structure based on anionic monomers of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid/acrylic acid–sodium acrylate via facile solution polymerization technique in an aqueous media with incorporation of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets. Mechanical performance of materials in the “as-prepared condition” and “swollen state” was characterized via tensile, compression, and rheology tests,...

    , Article Applied Thermal Engineering ; Volume 110 , 2017 , Pages 1091-1100 ; 13594311 (ISSN) Daviran, S ; Kasaeian, A ; Golzari, S ; Mahian, O ; Nasirivatan, S ; Wongwises, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this study, an automotive air conditioning system is simulated by considering HFO-1234yf (2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene) as the drop-in replacement of HFC-134a. The simulated air conditioning system consists of a multi-louvered fin and flat-plate type evaporator, a wobble-plate type compressor, a mini-channel parallel-flow type condenser and a thermostatic expansion valve. The thermodynamic properties of the refrigerants are extracted from the REFPROP 8.0 software, and a computer program is simulated for the thermodynamic analysis. Two different conditions have been considered in this program for the cycle analysis: for the first state, the cooling capacity is taken as constant, and for the...

    Abstract
This paper is focused on the development and verification of a heat attitude model (HAM) for satellite attitude determination. Within this context, the Sun and the Earth are considered as the main external sources of radiation that could effect the satellite surface temperature changes. Assuming that the satellite orbital position (navigational data) is known, the proposed HAM provides the satellite surface temperature with acceptable accuracy and also relates the net heat flux (NHF) of three orthogonal satellite surfaces to its attitude via the inertial to satellite transformation matrix. The proposed HAM simulation results are verified through comparison with commercial thermal analysis...

    Abstract
Exploration of the ejector refrigeration cycle (ERC) in the combination with well-known power cycles to produce cooling output as well as power output is highlighted in recent decades. Since organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is practically usable than other power cycles, a combination of the ORC/ERC in a novel form is presented. Power and refrigeration sub-cycles are combined by a common condenser in separate loops to form dual-loop power/refrigeration cycle. The exhaust of the turbine is mixed with the outlet flow of the ejector, and then the mixed flow is fed into the condenser. Thermodynamic and thermoeconomic analysis of the proposed cycle are carried out with different working fluids (i.e.,...

    Abstract
Transient thermal field in laser surface hardening treatment of medium carbon steel was analyzed by employing both three-dimensional analytical model and finite element model. In finite element model the laser beam was considered as a moving plane heat flux to establish the temperature rise distribution in the work-piece, while in analytical model laser beam was considered as an internal heat source. The numerical results were compared with the analytical results. In laser heat treatment of steel some methods are used to produce a wider and nearly uniform average irradiance profile. It may be achieved by rotating the beam optically, thereby producing an overlapping spiral track, or by...
