    Steady flow quality assessment of a modified transonic wind tunnel

    Abstract
    An existing operational trisonic wind tunnel is upgraded to improve its performance criterion in the transonic regime. In this research, the test section is modified according to the operational requirements of the various existing transonic wind tunnels. Several perforated walls are designed, manufactured, and installed on the top and bottom sides of the test section. The flow in the test section of the wind tunnel is surveyed for the empty condition prior to testing models.     In the present study, methods for improving the hydraulic performance of labyrinth side weirs in a rectangular channel are reported based on model experimentation. For this purpose different arrangements and configurations of groups of guide vane plates and piles in the side weir flow field were tested. Experiments were conducted on labyrinth side weirs of different lengths and sill heights fitted in the test section of a rectangular glass-walled channel.     Abstract
    Experiments are performed to evaluate the impact of trip wires on the turbulence intensity in a few low speed wind tunnels. Trip wires of different sizes are installed at different positions in the contraction section of four different wind tunnels and measurements are made at various free stream velocities. The results indicate that the pressure distributions are altered compared to the clean condition. Trip wires move the adverse pressure gradient toward the inlet of the contraction section.     Subsonic wind tunnel experiments were conducted to study the turbulence level in the test section. Measurements were performed by introducing trip strip and/or damping screens on the flow field. The results indicated that the introduction of trip strips not only reduced the turbulence intensity compared to cases without it, but also flattened the variations. Further, the experiments which investigated the impact of the damping screens indicated a similar reduction in turbulence intensity; the pattern, however, remained the same.     Cavitation behavior of fully submerged propellers is an important issue in the marine engineering field. Cavitation tunnel is usually used for studying hydrodynamic performances and cavitation behavior of a propeller. In the present study, the cavitation behavior of the DTMB P4119 propeller was studied both in a uniform flow and in the wake field of a specific vessel.     Abstract
    Subsonic wind tunnel experiments were conducted to study the effect of forced transition on the pressure distribution in the concave portion of contraction. Further more, the effect of early transition on the turbulence level in the test section of the wind tunnel is studied. Measurements were performed by installing several trip strips at two different positions in the concave portion of the contraction. The results show that installation of the trip strips, have significant effects on both turbulence intensity and on the pressure distribution.     Abstract
    An experimental study on the onset of nucleate boiling (ONB) is performed for water annular flow to provide a systematic database for low pressure and velocity conditions. A parametric study has been conducted to investigate the effect of pressure, inlet subcooling, heat and mass flux on flow boiling. The test section includes a Pyrex tube with 21 mm inner diameter and a stainless steel (SS-304) rod with outer diameter of 6 mm. Pressure, heat and mass flux are in the range of 1.73 < P < 3.82 bar, 40 < q < 450 kW/m2 and 70 < G < 620 kg/m2 s, respectively.
