    Abstract
Synthesis and swelling behavior of a new superabsorbent hydrogel based on natural salep grafted with polyacrylamide is described. The new superabsorbent hydrogel biopolymer was synthesized via radical crosslinking and graft copolymerization of acrylamide monomer onto salep backbones. Regarding to the water absorption of hydrogel, the best synthesis condition is reported. FTIR spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis were used to confirm the structure of the final product and a mechanism for superabsorbent hydrogel formation was also suggested. After preparing the desired hydrogels based on optimum condition, several factors affecting the swelling behavior of hydrogel including pH of...

    Abstract
In this study, a series of highly swelling hydrogels based on sodium alginate (NaAlg) and polymethacrylamide (PMAM) was prepared through free radical polymerization. The graft copolymerization reaction was performed in a homogeneous medium and in the presence of ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator andN,N′-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker. The crosslinked graft copolymer, alginate-graft-polymethacrylamide (Alg-g-PMAM), was then partially hydrolyzed by NaOH solution to yield a hydrogel, hydrolyzed alginate-graft-polymethacrylamide (H-Alg-g-PMAM). During alkaline hydrolysis, the carboxamide groups of Alg-g-PMAM were converted into hydrophilic carboxylate anions. Either the...

    Abstract
Acrylamide (AAm) monomer was directly grafted onto chitosan using ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator and methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinking agent under an inert atmosphere. Two factors affecting the swelling capacity of the obtained hydrogel, AAm and MBA concentrations, were studied. The polymer structures were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy. Water absorbencies of the hydrogels were compared between before and after the alkaline hydrolysis treatment. Saponification of chitosan-g-poly(acrylamide) (chitosan-g-PAAm) with a hot sodium hydroxide solution gave rise to a high water absorbency. Swelling of the hydrogel samples in saline solution (0.15 mol/L NaCl, CaCl2 and...

    Abstract
Graft copolymerization of mixtures of acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AAm) onto chitosan was carried out by using potassium persulfate (KPS) as a free radical initiator in the presence of methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker. The effect of reaction variables, such as MBA concentration and AA/AAm ratio on the water absorbency capacity have been investigated. The polymer structures were confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy. Water absorbencies were compared for the hydrogels before and after alkaline hydrolysis. In the non-hydrolyzed hydrogel, enhanced water absorbency was obtained with increasing AA in monomer feed. However, after saponification, the sample with high AAm ratio exhibited...

    Abstract
Two series of alkali hydrolyzed starch-g-polyacrylonitrile (H-SPAN) superabsorbents were prepared from granular and gelatinized corn starches. The grafting parameters of SPAN copolymers were determined and the polymers were analyzed by FTIR spectroscopy. A combination of three influencing factors (i.e. thermal pre-treatment of the initial starch, presence or absence of oxygen in the stage of ceric-initiated PAN grafting, and neutralization after alkali treatment) on swelling characteristics of the final hydrogel was evaluated in a practical viewpoint. The superabsorbents were discriminated according to their swelling behavior in water and different aqueous salt solutions. The swelling...

    Abstract
Hydrogel hybrids were conveniently prepared from alkaline hydrolysis of chitosan-poly(acrylonitrile) mixture under highly practical conditions. The reaction of chitosan alkoxide anions with nitrile groups of poly(acrylonitrile) (PAN) forms crosslinking points and results in a three-dimensional network with superswelling ability in aqueous media. The hydrogel hybrid was identified using FTIR spectroscopy. The PAN content of the hydrolyzing feed affects proportionally the swelling capacity of the hydrogel hybrid. The swelling properties (capacity and rate) of the ampholytic hydrogel were investigated preliminarily. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc

    Abstract
The use of super-swelling polymers is steadily increasing and the applications in industry are continuing to grow. With the authorization of the superabsorbents in food packaging by the Food and Drug Administration recently, demand may soon take off in the market. However, the increase in prices of petroleum products in recent years may be a drawback for these acrylic-based materials. Thus, there is now a need to develop natural-based super-swelling hydrogels which are more economical and environment friendly. In addition, the super-swelling gels are promising novel functions in the biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. This review is aimed to highlight research and trends in protein-...

    Abstract
Polyampholyte hydrogels are hydrophilic networks that contain both positively- and negatively-charged functional groups on their structure. Polysulfobetaines are the most important type of polyampholytes, which have been extensively studied. However, these hydrogels exhibited poor gel strength causing limitation of their applications. Consequently, much attention has been focused on the preparation of nanocomposite hydrogels with high gel strength and lower cost using organomodified clays. In this project, Novel polyampholytic superabsorbing nanocomposites based on the zwitterionic sulfobetaine monomer [3-(methacrylamido)propyl)]dimethyl(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide (MPDSAH) were...
