    Abstract
In this study, some stabilized magnetite based ferrofluids were synthesized using Dextran as a stabilizing agent. In order to achieve optimum experimental conditions for synthesizing ferrofluids as MRI contrast agents, the Taguchi method was used. This approach was employed to design and minimize the number of required experiments. By using the Taguchi orthogonal (L16) array, four parameters including solution temperature and alkalinity, reaction temperature and stirring rate were selected at four predetermined levels for 16 experiments. Synthesizing processes established based on this set of experimental conditions were carried out and the obtained ferrofluids were characterized using PCS,...

The kinetics of Ni-Co/SiC composite coatings electrodeposition

    , Article Journal of Alloys and Compounds ; Volume 504, Issue 2 , 2010 , Pages 514-518 ; 09258388 (ISSN) Bahadormanesh, B ; Dolati, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Ni-Co/SiC composite coatings with various contents of SiC particles were electrodeposited in a modified Watt's type of Ni-Co bath containing suspended 20 nm SiC particles. Deposition parameters including current density, bath SiC concentration and magnetic stirring rate were optimized for the highest amount of the SiC codeposition: the current density of 4 A/dm2, 40 g/dm 3 SiC concentration and 480 rpm stirring rate. In order to study the SiC particles codeposition, the Guglielmi's model of codeposition was modified for high volume percentages of the second phase and the modified model was employed to explain the effects of deposition parameters on the kinetics of the particles codeposition....

    Abstract
This study investigated the behavior of ferrofluids containing superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) of various compositions for potential applications in drug delivery and imaging. To ensure biocompatibility, the interaction of these SPION with two cell lines (adhesive and suspended) was also investigated using an MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5- diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay. The cell lines studied were primary mouse connective tissue cells (adhesive) and human leukemia cells (suspended). SPION were synthesized with a co-precipitation method under different stirring rates and NaOH molarities. The SPION demonstrated a range of magnetic saturations due to their...

    Abstract
Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) with narrow size distribution and stabilized by polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were synthesized. The particles were prepared by a coprecipitation technique using ferric and ferrous salts with a molar Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio of 2. Using a design of experiments (DOE) approach, the effect of different synthesis parameters (stirring rate and base molarity) on the structure, morphology, saturation magnetization, purity, size, and size distribution of the synthesized magnetite nanoparticles was studied by various analysis techniques including X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)...

Application of numerical simulation to solid phase-microextraction for decreasing of extraction time of pyrene and phthalate esters on solid coatings

    Abstract
Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) approach with the k-ε closure model is employed for the first time to simulate direct Solid-Phase Micro-Extraction (SPME) computationally. Simulations are performed by using COMSOL Multiphysics in order to examine methods to decrease the extraction time. Experiments are also conducted to support data obtained from the numerical framework. Di-n-Butyl Phthalate (DNBP) and etched steel wire are chosen as the analyte and the adsorbent, respectively. Stirring rate, fiber's location, stirrer magnet's size, and the method of sample rotation are examined to decrease the extraction time. In addition, the effects of adding a baffle to the vial and implementing a...

Cell toxicity of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles

    , Article Journal of Colloid and Interface Science ; Volume 336, Issue 2 , 2009 , Pages 510-518 ; 00219797 (ISSN) Mahmoudi, M ; Simchi, A ; Milani, A. S ; Stroeve, P ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The performance of nanoparticles for biomedical applications is often assessed by their narrow size distribution, suitable magnetic saturation and low toxicity effects. In this work, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) with different size, shape and saturation magnetization levels were synthesized via a co-precipitation technique using ferrous salts with a Fe3+/Fe2+ mole ratio equal to 2. A parametric study is conducted, based on a uniform design-of-experiments methodology and a critical polymer/iron mass ratio (r-ratio) for obtaining SPION with narrow size distribution, suitable magnetic saturation, and optimum biocompatibility is identified. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been...
