Using Finite Element Method for Analyzing the Performance of Low Yield Point Steel Plate Shear Wall

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jebelli, Houtan (Author) ; Mofid, Massoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Steel plate shear walls are lateral load resisting systems, especially against earthquake excitation. They are constructed with or without stiffeners. Stiffened walls are more ductile than without stiffeners walls. In this research, nine thin steel plate shear walls models were considered in three groups of 5story, 01story and 05 story walls. In each group different yield point steel for the infill plate was used. The results showed that, using low yield point(LYP) steel will increase energy dissipation of models up to %36. LYP also improve shear capacity of models up to %96. The results showed that using LYP will cause lower lateral displacement in models

Response Modification Factor of Steel Plate Shear Walls in Concrete Structures

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hosseinkhani, Ali (Author) ; Mofid, Massoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The Steel shear wall is one of resisting lateral load system which has been used since 1970.with respect to design we can apply this system with or without stiffeners .here our investigation is about steel shear wall without stiffeners. Also this system is called SSW. Since using this system is new fashion, there is no specific code for it in Iranian 2800 code .also there is no code for using this system in reinforced concrete frames in any code which makes this investigation much harder. Need to obtain R which is one of the most important seismic parameters, encouraged us to consider R for SSW in 3 to 7 storey structures .we obtained static pushover curves with nonlinear static analysis...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Eghbali Farkoush, Vahid (Author) ; Khalu, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis different steel plate shear walls have been investigated using ABAQUS software. These investigations have been focused on various topics, including both boundary frame elements and also the in-fill plate. The main results have been gathered by utilizing different steel plate thicknesses and different boundary frame elements. In order to achieve a better understanding of the effects of both of these elements, various aspect ratios have also been investigated. Moment of inertia has been noted as the main property of both beams and columns used in SPSW. Comparison of the gained results is noteworthy. They show a variety of changes in the load-displacement diagrams, due to changes...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Fathi, Morvarid (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Plan irregularities of structures due to the governing regional and environmental conditions are a pretty important issue from the architectural as well as structural design point of view. Most of the time, especially in mid-rise and/or high-rise buildings with plan irregularities, dual system of Moment Resisting Frames (MRF), accompanied with shear walls are strongly suggested. Considering the previous works and investigations of researchers, reveals not too many studies and researches in this regards; specially, when it comes into new area and application of the Steel Shear Walls (SSW). In the present work, at first it is proposed to model and analyze a MRF steel structure with plan...

Numerical Modeling of the Behavior of an Innovative Steel Shear Wall

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Valikhani, Alireza (Author) ; Khonsari, Vahid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The behavior of a new steel shear wall, already devised by the supervisor of this project, and tested by other students, was modeled numerically. Such numerical simulation was carried out using the Finite Element Methods of analysis. Hexagonal solid elements were employed in order to discretize the tested specimens and those parts of the test assembly which had to be included in the models. Both, Monotonic and Cyclic tests were simulated numerically. Comparison of the tests results with those of the numerical models showed fair correlation between them. Percentages of error in the dissipated energy for the three monotonic tests were 6.9%, 6.4% and 11.2%, respectively, whereas that of the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shabanlou, Mohammad (Author) ; Aligani Moghaddam, Hassan (Supervisor) ; Saedi Darian, Amir (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Over the last years, terrorist attacks and accidental explosions have brought on a need for research in the field of structural engineering to study the response of a building subjected to blast loading conditions. An explosion within or surrounding a building, not only can have disastrous effects causing both structural damage or failure, but may also lead to the death of human beings. In order to prevent these catastrophes and gain a better understanding of responses of the buildings and lateral resisting systems with different characteristics, the study of the behavior of the lateral resisting systems under blast loading conditions is essential. This research will also aid in the...

Study of the Effect of Strip Opening on the Sides of the Steel Plate Shear Wall

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kavei, Sina (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the lateral-load bearing systems that has been recommended since almost 40 years ago is the steel plate shear wall (SPSW) system, which consists of a steel plate surrounded by beams and columns in each story. As for the performance of SPSWs, it is assumed that the boundary members of the wall’s plate, i.e. beams and columns, have sufficient stiffness and strength, so that they would not yield by the tensile stresses exerted due to the post-buckling behavior of the plate (tension field); and the global stability of the structure is still maintained. This assumption leads to significantly increased dimensions of the sections applied in the wall’s boundary members, particularly its...

Structural Performance Assessment of Large Unstiffened Openings in Steel Plate Shear Walls and Introduction of Plate-Frame Interaction in Steel Plate Shear Walls with Perforated Infill Plates

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Darvishi, Hadi (Author) ; Mofid, Masood (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the advantages of Steel Plate Shear Walls (SPSWs) is the possibility of using openings with varying sizes in the infill plates depending on a need basis. Openings are used for various reasons, such as the possibility of installing utilities and for architectural reasons. However, the latest research studies suggest that the use of large-sized openings in infill plates calls for the use of heavy stiffeners or special measures for ensuring system stability. The seismic behavior of two SPSWs with large unstiffened opening (one with a rectangular opening in the middle of the plate and the other with two oval openings on the sides of the infill plate) was studied experimentally and...

Method of Estimating the Response Modification Factor for Stiffened Steel Shear Wall Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Aslani, Jalal (Author) ; Bakhshi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Steel shear wall systems have been introduced as a lateral load resisting system since 1970s. Based on the designer’s choice, this system can be used with or without stiffeners. Employing stiffeners prevents the elastic buckling of steel plates which can enhance the system to absorb more energy. The design code for using stiffners has not developed yet in Iran since this kind of systems is not common practice. In this study, the Response Modification Factor (R), as an important factor in the design procedures of structures, is investigated for 2 to 10-story building structures which have steel shear walls with 3 and 6 millimeters thickness with 3, 4 and 6 meters spans. To this end, the...

Performance Based Optimal Seismic Design of Steel Plate Shear Walls by Bendurance Time Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghaderifard, Morteza (Author) ; Estekanchi, Homayoon (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The AISC Seismic Design Provisions include capacity design requirements for steel plate shear walls since 2005. This system consist of thin web plates that infill frame panels with steel beams as horizontal boundary elements (HBEs), and columns as vertical boundary elements (VBEs). The thin unstiffened web plates are expected to buckle in shear at low load levels and develop tension field action, providing ductility and energy dissipation through tension yielding of the web plate. HBEs are designed for stiffness and strength requirements and are expected to anchor the tension field formation in the web plates. VBEs are designed for yielding of web plates and plastic hinge formation at the...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Emami, Fereshteh (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor) ; Vafai, Abolhassan (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Steel shear wall system has been used in recent years as the lateral-load resisting system in the design and retrofit of high-rise buildings. This system consists of infill shear panel is framed by surrounding steel frames. Infill shear panel can be applied in two types: stiffened or unstiffened. Considering to the previous studies, the stiffened type is more convenient in the seismic performance and utility condition. However, in the stiffened system, the construction cost is considerably higher because of the complicated construction details. This dissertation concentrates on the experimental and analytical studies of trapezoidally corrugated steel shear walls as an option for removing the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farzampour, Alireza (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The widespread usage of corrugated steel plates as girders and steel shear walls necessitates the need for further investigation of theseefficient structural members. Having significant initial stiffness, high capability of energy dissipation and special geometry are the fundamental reasons for this study. The nonlinear behavior of trapezoidal corrugated steel shear walls with rectangular opening has been studied in this thesis. A series of corrugated and simple shear walls with and without opening regarding different angles of corrugation and different infill plat thicknesses have been investigated. This analytical study was conducted to compare the initial stiffness, ultimate strength,...

Numerical Study of Stiffener Effects on Composite Shear Wall Performance

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Taherkhani, Amir (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Concrete filled double-steel-plate (CFDSP) composite wall is a new lateral resisting system that recently used in design and strengthening of high-rise buildings. This CFDSP composite wall is composed of concrete filled steel tubular columns at the two boundaries and concrete filled double-steel-plate wall body. The main advantage of this system is the interaction between steel and concrete which delays local buckling of steel plates. Also, steel jacket increases the strength of concrete in result of confinement effects. Furthermore, these systems have lower thickness compared to ordinary concrete shear walls. Hence, they have less structural weight which reduces the earthquake force....

An unstiffened specimen as a control sample and two other specimens with different configuration of stiffeners were constructed and tested to study the effect of diagonal stiffeners. Based on the observations during the tests, it was decided to add and study two other specimens too, including one...

On the Characteristics of The Behavior of Multi-story Steel Frames Accompanied by Steel Shear Walls with Openings

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rostami, Parisa (Author) ; Mofid, Massoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
As steel shear walls are usually applied in the central cores of buildings (around the elevators and stairs), the use of opening as door is inevitable in steel shear wall spans. On the other hand, because of weakening the performance of steel shear walls due to the presence of these openings, it is necessary to apply stiffeners around it. The use of stiffeners around all sides of opening continued to beams and columns, is very expensive. Therefore, the necessity of studying on the effect of different arrangements of stiffeners on the behavior of steel shear walls is felt. In this research, a number of steel shear walls with different characteristics in terms of plate aspect ratio, location...

Experimental Study of a New Steel Shear Wall

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Seyf, Hamed (Author) ; Khansari, Vahid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The lateral force & its control has always been a great concern to structural designers. Based on the project’s location, this force can be either earthquake or wind force. In our country, Iran, the earthquake force is usually the dominant one. Of the most important differences between these two kinds of forces, we may point out the cyclic characteristics and nature of earthquake forces. One can choose different strategies to face the earthquake force including the use of dampers. Dampers exist in vast varieties of different categories which we will briefly explain in this thesis. Dampers can be used on their own or in combination with other lateral force resistance systems like bracings or...
