Patient-Robot-therapist collaboration using resistive impedance controlled tele-robotic systems subjected to time delays

    , Article Journal of Mechanisms and Robotics ; Volume 10, Issue 6 , 2018 ; 19424302 (ISSN) Sharifi, M ; Salarieh, H ; Behzadipour, S ; Tavakoli, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, an approach to physical collaboration between a patient and a therapist is proposed using a bilateral impedance control strategy developed for delayed tele-robotic systems. The patient performs a tele-rehabilitation task in a resistive virtual environment with the help of online assistive forces from the therapist being provided through teleoperation. Using this strategy, the patient's involuntary hand tremors can be filtered out and the effort of severely impaired patients can be amplified in order to facilitate their early engagement in physical tasks. The response of the first desired impedance model is tracked by the master robot (interacting with the patient), and the...

    , Article ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, IMECE 2007, Seattle, WA, 11 November 2007 through 15 November 2007 ; Volume 9 PART B , 2008 , Pages 1201-1208 ; 0791843033 (ISBN); 9780791843031 (ISBN) Beigzadeh, B ; Meghdari, A ; Beigzadeh, Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
In this study, we explore the possibility of dynamic object manipulation of objects using a series of manipulators. Here, two three-active-link manipulators have been considered and the generality of the idea to a series of manipulator is developed easily. So without any gripper, and in an unstable grasp manner, we try to throw an object by a manipulator and catch It with another. Also we can consider the impacts generated in the moment of throwing and catching objects, as some disturbance and therefore we damp it. Finally we deal with the whole manipulation process as a system with some noise and disturbance and try to demonstrate its stability. All results have been validated with the aid...

Numerical Analysis of an Afterburner Combustion Stability

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rezaei, Vahid (Author) ; Farshchi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Inlet flow of afterburners comes from the burnt products of the primary combustion chamber. The fuel is injected and the mixture is ignited to form a flame which is stabilized behind a flameholder in the afterburner. Flame stability stems from wake (recirculation zone) of flameholder. With the aid of high residence time of flow behind the flameholder reactants get the time to catch activation energy. Some parameters like oxygen content, mass flow rate, inlet temperature, and nozzle area ratio play an important role in afterburner combustion efficiency and flame stability. In this study we focused on afterburner combustion stability in GE J85-21 engine. This engine will be in service through...

Robust stable control of haptic devices based on transparency maximization

    , Article ASME 2010 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, IMECE 2010, Vancouver, BC, 12 November 2010 through 18 November 2010 ; Volume 8, Issue PARTS A AND B , 2010 , Pages 773-780 ; 9780791844458 (ISBN) Tajaddodianfar, F ; Ahmadian, M ; Vossoughi, G ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Performance of a haptic device is evaluated based on the concept of transparency. Stability of a haptic device prevalently has been evaluated based on the passivity criterion. Due to conservativeness of passivity, it appears as an obstacle to improve transparency. In this paper, passivity is suggested to be replaced by the complementary stability criterion which accounts for the robust stability of the interaction in the presence of uncertain user hand dynamics. In this respect, an algorithm is proposed which guarantees transparency of the haptic device in a stable manner. Assuming that the dynamics of the device is known, a certain compensatory structure is assigned. This special structure...

    Abstract
We present a Nyquist stability criterion based on transmission line modeling for graphene nanoribbon (GNR) interconnects. This is the first instance that such an analysis has been presented for GNR, so far. In this analysis, the dependence of the degree of relative stability for multilayer GNR (MLGNR) interconnects on the geometry of each ribbon has been acquired. It is shown that, increasing the length and width, MLGNR interconnects become more stable

    , Article Communications in Numerical Methods in Engineering ; Volume 24, Issue 12 , October , 2008 , Pages 1723-1740 ; 10698299 (ISSN) Tavakoli, R ; Davami, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
An efficient numerical method for simulation of casting solidification is presented. The presented method is based on a stable explicit finite difference solution of the heat equation in conjunction with the temperature recovery method to incorporate latent heat effect. The computational cost of the presented method is approximately the same as an explicit method (per time step), while it is free from the time step limitation due to the stability criterion. A simple domain decomposition method is included to improve the computational performance of the presented method. The efficiency, stability and accuracy of the presented method are supported with illustrative examples. Copyright © 2007...

Impedance control of non-linear multi-DOF teleoperation systems with time delay: absolute stability

    , Article IET Control Theory and Applications ; Volume 12, Issue 12 , 2018 , Pages 1722-1729 ; 17518644 (ISSN) Sharifi, M ; Salarieh, H ; Behzadipour, S ; Tavakoli, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A non-linear robust adaptive bilateral impedance controller is proposed to provide the absolute stability of multi-DOF teleoperation systems with communication delays, in addition to the force and position tracking performance. The proposed controller realises two desired (or reference) impedance models for the master and slave robots using a new non-linear robust version of the model reference adaptive control scheme. Using the absolute stability criterion, the robustness condition of the teleoperation system against communication delays is obtained, resulting in suitable adjustments of parameter values in the desired impedance models. In addition, using the Lyapunov stability theorem, the...

    , Article Circuits, Systems, and Signal Processing ; Volume 32, Issue 6 , 2013 , Pages 2653-2666 ; 0278081X (ISSN) Akbari, L ; Faez, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In this paper a time-domain response and Nyquist stability criterion to acquire dependence of degree of crosstalk relative stability based on transmission lines modeling (TLM) is investigated for coupled multilayer graphene nanoribbon (MLGNR) interconnects. This is the first instance that such an analysis has been presented for coupled MLGNR consisting of both capacitive and mutual-inductive couplings. The near-end and far-end outputs of coupled MLGNR individually are compared in two cases, with considering both couplings and without them (single MLGNR). It is observed that the near-end output of the system together with both couplings is more stable and at its far-end output, an induced...

Stability criteria for a class of fractional order systems

    , Article Nonlinear Dynamics ; Volume 61, Issue 1-2 , 2010 , Pages 153-161 ; 0924090X (ISSN) Kheirizad, I ; Tavazoei, M. S ; Jalali, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
This paper deals with the stability problem in LTI fractional order systems having fractional orders between 1 and 1.5. Some sufficient algebraic conditions to guarantee the BIBO stability in such systems are obtained. The obtained conditions directly depend on the coefficients of the system equations, and consequently using them is easier than the use of conditions constructed based on solving the characteristic equation of the system. Some illustrations are presented to show the applicability of the obtained conditions. For example, it is shown that these conditions may be useful in stabilization of unstable fractional order systems or in taming fractional order chaotic systems

System protection scheme for mitigation of cascaded voltage collapses

    , Article IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Volume 3, Issue 3 , 2009 , Pages 242-256 ; 17518687 (ISSN) Amraee, T ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Feuillet, R ; Mozafari, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
A system protection scheme is proposed to mitigate cascaded voltage collapses. Based on the post-contingency conditions of either existence or non-existence of an equilibrium solution, and with regard to the stability and security criteria, the proposed scheme finds the optimal set of remedies. The proposed stabilising scheme brings the non-equilibrium post-contingency operating point back inside a stable region, and then passes this point to the securing scheme. Also, to enhance the performance of the stabilising scheme, a sensitivity analysis method is presented to detect the most effective remedies. The proposed securing scheme converts the stable, but insecure operating point, to a...

SRAM cell stability: a dynamic perspective

    , Article IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits ; Volume 44, Issue 2 , 2009 , Pages 609-619 ; 00189200 (ISSN) Sharifkhani, M ; Sachdev, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
SRAM cell stability assessment is traditionally based on static criteria of data stability requiring three coincident points in DC butterfly curves. This definition is based on static (DC) characteristics of the cell transistors. We introduce the dynamic criteria of cell data stability knowing that the cell operates in a dynamic environment alternating between access and non-access conditions. The proposed definition of the dynamic data stability criteria introduces a new bound for the cell static noise margin (SNM). It reveals that the true noise margin of the cell can be made considerably higher than the conventional SNM once the cell access time is sufficiently shorter than the cell...

Controlled islanding for enhancing grid resilience against power system blackout

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Volume 36, Issue 4 , 2021 , Pages 2386-2396 ; 08858977 (ISSN) Kamali, S ; Amraee, T ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper proposes a transient stability constrained controlled islanding (TSC-CI) approach against cascading events in power systems. Using the wide area measurements, the proposed islanding algorithm is implemented regarding the actual dynamic conditions of the resulted islands. Since the main concern, right after the execution of controlled network splitting, is the transient stability of synchronous machines, a transient energy function is utilized for proper network partitioning. The proposed transient stability criterion is expressed as a function of the transfer impedance between each pair of generators in the resulted islands. Transfer impedance between each pair of coherent...

    , Article Nonlinear Analysis: Hybrid Systems ; Vol. 15 , 2015 , pp. 86-97 ; ISSN: 1751570X Merat, K ; Salarieh, H ; Alasty, A ; Meghdari, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, at first the stability condition which gives an upper stochastic bound for a class of Stochastic Hybrid Systems (SHS) with deterministic jumps is derived. Here, additive noise signals are considered that do not vanish at equilibrium points. The presented theorem gives an upper bound for the second stochastic moment or variance of the system trajectories. Then, the linear case of SHS is investigated to show the application of the theorem. For the linear case of such stochastic hybrid systems, the stability criterion is obtained in terms of Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) and an upper bound on state covariance is obtained for them. Then utilizing the stability theorem, an output...
