    Abstract
The radiative heat transfer should be calculated very accurately in many combustion domains. This work uses the spectral-line based weighted-sum-of-gray-gases (SLW) model to calculate the radiation heat transfer in a model furnace representing a combustion field with high temperature gradient variations. The past researchers have commonly implemented the reference approach in the SLW model. However, the reference approach produces error because of enforcing a reference temperature to perform the non-gray radiation heat transfer calculations in non-isothermal domains. In this work, we implement a modified reference approach, which reduces such errors in non-gray gas calculations. We show that...

Modelling of Turbulence and Chemistry Interaction Using an Optimized Conditional Source-term Estimation Approach

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Latifi, Mojtaba (Author) ; Salehi, Mohammad Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of the optimized conditional source-term estimation approach. This model was first implemented in a computational fluid dynamics code, and then the Bernstein expansion was used to optimize it. For validation, two pre-mixed turbulent flames with different turbulence intensity and equivalence ratios were modeled with the optimized and RANS model. The results were obtained for mass fraction of the main and intermediate species, velocity and temperature examined in different sections. In the first flame, the turbulence intensity is low, and the flame is in the flamelet regimes; As a result, the results obtained with the optimized model are...

Localized conditional source-term estimation model for turbulent combustion

    Abstract
A novel functional form for approximating the conditional scalars in turbulent reacting flows is introduced based on the Bernstein polynomial. Multi-scalar measurement data of turbulent premixed and non-premixed flames are used to demonstrate that the new functional form provides an excellent reduced-order model for the conditional scalars. This model order reduction technique can be used to improve the accuracy, reduce the computational cost and enhance the spatial localization of the Conditional Source-term Estimation (CSE) model. CSE is a turbulence-chemistry interaction model similar to the Conditional Moment Closure (CMC) model, except that the conditional scalars are estimated from the...

A Priori Investigation of Laminar Flamelet Decomposition and Conditional Source-term Estimation Methods in Turbulent Premixed Flames

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mahdipour, Amir Hossein (Author) ; Salehi, Mohammad Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
An a priori analysis is performed to assess the performances of Laminar Flamelet Decomposition (LFD) and Conditional Source-term Estimation (CSE) methods in predicting conditional and unconditional filtered production rates and mass fractions for turbulent premixed flames over a wide range of Karlovitz numbers, which is an indicator for the level of turbulence-chemistry interaction in premixed combustion. In LFD, it is assumed that a turbulent flame is composed of strained laminar flamelets. By presuming the functional form of the probability density function (PDF) of the progress variable and inverting the integral equation for the unconditional filtered mass fractions of one of the species,...

Solving combined natural convection-radiation in participating media considering the compressibility effects

    Abstract
In this work, we aim to study the effect of temperature gradients on the combined natural convection-radiation heat transfer problem in participating media. To impose this combined effect, we first solve the radiative transfer equation in an absorbing and emitting media. Then, we suitably add the radiation source terms to the energy equation and solve the fluid flow equations. Literature shows that many incompressible algorithms use the Boussinesq assumption to model the thermobuoyant force; however, the validity of this assumption is limited to cases with low temperature gradient distributions. Evidently, Boussinesq assumption would result in considerable errors in high temperature gradient...

    Unstructured-coarse-grid generation usina backaround-grid approach

    Abstract
Reservoir flow simulation involves subdivision of the physical domain into a number of gridblocks. This is best accomplished with optimized gridpoint density and a minimized number of gridblocks, especially for coarse-grid generation from a fine-grid geological model. In any coarse-grid generation, proper distribution of gridpoints, which form the basis of numerical gridblocks, is a challenging task. We show that this can be achieved effectively by a novel grid-generation approach based on a background grid that stores gridpoint spacing parameters. Spacing parameter (L) can be described by Poisson's equation (▽2L = G), where the local density of gridpoints is controlled by a variable source...

Modified incompressible SPH method for simulating free surface problems

    Abstract
An incompressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (I-SPH) formulation is presented to simulate free surface incompressible fluid problems. The governing equations are mass and momentum conservation that are solved in a Lagrangian form using a two-step fractional method. In the first step, velocity field is computed without enforcing incompressibility. In the second step, a Poisson equation of pressure is used to satisfy incompressibility condition. The source term in the Poisson equation for the pressure is approximated, based on the SPH continuity equation, by an interpolation summation involving the relative velocities between a reference particle and its neighboring particles. A new form...
