    , Article Applied Thermal Engineering ; Volume 31, Issue 8-9 , 2011 , Pages 1543-1545 ; 13594311 (ISSN) Firouzfar, E ; Soltanieh, M ; Noie, S. H ; Saidi, S. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The present study tries to use the methanol-silver nanofluid filled thermosyphon heat exchanger and compares the effectiveness as well as energy saving with pure methanol. Experimental results show that using methanol-silver nanofluid, leads to energy saving around 8.8-31.5% for cooling and 18-100% for reheating the supply air stream in an air conditioning system

    Abstract
In this paper, the performance of a novel HDH solar desalination system equipped with a combination of heat pipe (HP), evacuated tube collector (ETC) and air bubble column humidifier is experimentally investigated. This novel HDH system uses advantages of ETC-HP as a highly efficient thermal absorption and conductor device, and at the same time employs the advantages of an air bubble column humidifier, i.e. high interface area and effective mixing in order to heat the water and humidify the air, respectively. The effects of various parameters including incoming air flow rate into the humidifier, initial depth of water in the humidifier, and adding fluids such as oil and water in the space...

Experimental investigation of a novel magnetically variable conductance thermosyphon heat pipe

    , Article Applied Thermal Engineering ; Volume 126 , 2017 , Pages 1-8 ; 13594311 (ISSN) Shafii, M. B ; Ahmadi, H ; Faegh, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this study, a novel Magnetically Variable Conductance Thermosyphon Heat Pipe (MVCTHP) was investigated experimentally. The possibility of deactivating a portion of evaporator length and subsequently altering heat pipe resistance by positioning a steel ball inside the evaporator and moving it by an external magnet was studied. The effect of various ball positions in the evaporator and inclination angles on heat pipe performance was studied at 30, 60, 90 and 120 W. The results indicated that at a given heat input, moving the ball away from the beginning of the evaporator of heat pipe increases its thermal resistance. Furthermore, by increasing heat input, MVCTHP performance for various ball...

Effect of working fluid inventory and heat input on transient and steady state behavior of a thermosyphon

    Abstract
The effect of working fluid inventory and heat input on the performance of thermosyphon is investigated in this paper. First, a thermosyphon with diameter of 16 mm made of steel with toluene as working fluid and the length of the evaporator, adiabatic and condenser section 10, 23 and 17 cm was considered, respectively. The working fluid inventory was considered 0.1, 0.14, 0.18 and 0.24 of total volume of thermosyphon and in each case 54–235 W of heat input applied to the evaporator area also. In order to evaluate the transient behavior of the thermosyphon, in any amount of working fluid, 28 W of heat input was considered and temperature of the evaporator area were recorded at different...

Experimental investigation of extra-long pulsating heat pipe application in solar water heaters

    , Article Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science ; Volume 42 , 2012 , Pages 6-15 ; 08941777 (ISSN) Arab, M ; Soltanieh, M ; Shafii, M. B ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this study, the aim is to investigate the application of pulsating heat pipes (PHPs) as a heat transfer tool in a solar water heater (SWH). For this purpose, an extra-long pulsating heat pipe (ELPHP) is designed, constructed and installed in a thermosyphon solar water heater. In this work the ELPHPs are made of copper tubes of internal diameter 2.0. mm. The number of meandering turns is 6 and the working fluid employed is distilled water. The lengths of condenser and evaporator sections are 0.8 and 0.96. m, respectively. The length of adiabatic section varies between 0.7 and 1.8. m. Inclination of the ELPHPs varies between 15° and 90° but is 45° for evaporator section. Four different...

An experimental study of a solar hybrid system to produce freshwater from waste heat of photovoltaic module by using thermosyphon heat pipes

    , Article Energy Conversion and Management ; Volume 158 , 2018 , Pages 9-22 ; 01968904 (ISSN) Hooshmand, P ; Shafii, M. B ; Roshandel, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
An experimental study was conducted on a solar hybrid system to transform the waste heat of photovoltaic module (PV module) into a useful heat which could be used in a solar desalination (SD) system in order to produce freshwater (scenario 1). Then, different parameters such as the amount of the produced freshwater by condensed vapor on the glass cover and basin side walls were taken into consideration after the fabrication of the SD system. Furthermore, the effect of water depth in the tray and the effect of the presence of a fan inside the basin (scenario 3) on water yield (kg/m2hr) were evaluated. In addition, the effects of using a mirror to lead the reflected light on the PV module and...

Experimental examination of utilizing novel radially grooved surfaces in the evaporator of a thermosyphon heat pipe

    , Article Applied Thermal Engineering ; Volume 169 , 2020 Bahmanabadi, A ; Faegh, M ; Shafii, M. B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
The application of heat pipes with flat evaporators in cooling electronic devices has attracted a lot of attention in recent years. Increasing the rate of heat transfer in their evaporator by utilizing structured surfaces is considered as a prominent method for reducing the thermal resistance of the heat pipes. In this study, the performance of a thermosyphon heat pipe with novel radially rectangular-grooved and radially inclined triangular-grooved evaporator surfaces was evaluated experimentally. It is hypothesized that the radial grooves may enhance the performance by inducing rotational motions and increasing the heat transfer coefficients. Based on the results, the optimum filling ratio...
