    Preparation of highly rubber-toughened nylons

    , Article Iranian Polymer Journal (English Edition) ; Volume 16, Issue 7 , 2007 , Pages 459-468 ; 10261265 (ISSN) Bordbar, H ; Yousefi, A. A ; Ramezani saadatabadi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
Nylon 6 and 66 were toughened with EPDM-g-MA and SEBS-g-MA and steadystate rheological behaviour of rubbers, nylons and their blends and mechanical properties of nylons and their rubber-toughened blends were investigated. The EPDM maleic grafting preparation was performed In the framework of this study where SEBS-g-MA was obtained from a commercial source. The results showed the ultratoughened SEBS-g-MA blends, whereas EPDM blends under the same blending conditions did not show a significant improvement in toughness. In case of EPDM toughened blends an average of some micrometers was observed for the dispersed EPDM particles. Impact and tensile properties of the toughened blend with 20% of...

A new investigation of wax precipitation in iranian crude oils: Experimental method based on FTIR spectroscopy and theoretical predictions using PC-SAFT model

    , Article Journal of Molecular Liquids ; Volume 249 , 2018 , Pages 970-979 ; 01677322 (ISSN) Mashhadi Meighani, H ; Ghotbi, C ; Jafari Behbahani, T ; Sharifi, Kh ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Temperature dependency of infrared band intensity for methylene rocking vibration could be used as indication for creation of solid crystals while decreasing temperature. In this work, different experiments were conducted to measure wax appearance temperature, WAT, such as cross polarized microscopy, rheometry and FTIR spectroscopy. Three Iranian crude oils were characterized based on the SARA test and PC-SAFT model was developed to predict WAT. The obtained results by FTIR spectroscopy and PC-SAFT model were in quite agreement. FTIR spectroscopy determined higher WAT values which may be due to its higher sensitivity to smaller wax crystals. Also, the effect of a polymeric crystal modifier...

Characterization of carbon nanotube dispersion and filler network formation in melted polyol for nanocomposite materials

    , Article Powder Technology ; Volume 276 , 2015 , Pages 222-231 ; 00325910 (ISSN) Pircheraghi, G ; Foudazi, R ; Manas Zloczower, I ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Different grades of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were dispersed in poly(tetramethylene ether glycol) (PTMEG) without any solvent in the presence of a block copolymer dispersing agent by ultrasonication at a temperature well above the melting point of the PTMEG. The state of CNT dispersion at different length scales was evaluated by using optical microscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, rheological measurements, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis and sedimentation tests. Optical microscopy can be used to characterize the state of dispersion and CNT network formation on a micrometer scale, whereas UV-Vis provides useful information about the dispersion of individual CNTs at...

Evaluation of interfacial layer properties in the polystyrene/silica nanocomposite

    , Article Journal of Applied Polymer Science ; Volume 119, Issue 4 , August , 2011 , Pages 2039-2047 ; 00218995 (ISSN) Mortezaei, M ; Farzi, G ; Kalaee, M. R ; Zabihpoor, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Processing conditions and final mechanical properties of polymer nanocomposites are affected by their interfacial layers behavior. However, it is impossible to determine directly the properties of these layers by dynamic rheometry tests. In this work, the interfacial layers properties are evaluated for polystyrene containing silica nanoparticles by the concept of glass-transition temperature shift. The samples were prepared via solution-mixing method and dynamic rheometry was used to determine the viscoelastic behavior of filled polymers in the melt state. This initial step showed that addition of silica particles increased the glass-transition temperature. By preference, decrease in the...

Physico-mechanical properties and thermal stability of thermoset nanocomposites based on styrene-butadiene rubber/phenolic resin blend

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 527, Issue 4-5 , 2010 , Pages 917-926 ; 09215093 (ISSN) Shojaei, A ; Faghihi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Effect of organoclay (OC) on the performance of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR)/phenolic resin (PH) blend prepared by two-roll mill was investigated. The influence of OC content ranging between 2.5 and 30 phr on the performance of SBR/PH was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), interfacial energy analysis, tensile, dynamic mechanical, swelling, cure rheometry and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It was found that the OC is mainly localized in the SBR phase of SBR/PH blend through the kinetically favored mechanism relevant to rubber chains. The results also demonstrated the positive role of PH on the dispersion of OC. Both PH and OC showed...
