, Article Iranian Journal of Science and Technology ( IJST): Transactions of Mechanical Engineering ; 2012, Vol.36, No. M1, P.13-23 Solhjoo, S ; Simchi, A. (Abdolreza) ; Aashuri, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A molecular dynamics simulation study has been performed to investigate the solidification and remelting of aluminum using Sutton - Chen many body potential. Different numbers of atoms from 108 to 2048 atoms were considered to find an adequate size for the system. Three different cooling and heating rates, i.e. 1 0 12 K/s, 10 13 K/s and 10 14 K/s, were used. The structure of the system was examined using radial distribution function. The melting and crystallization temperatures of aluminum were evaluated by calculating the variation of heat capacity during the phase t ransformation. Additionally, Wendt – Abraham parameters were calculated to determine the glass transition temperature. It is...

The effect of remelting on the melt and casting quality in Al-7%Si-Mg castings

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Vol. 605 , 2014 , Pages 203-209 ; ISSN: 09215093 Eisaabadi, B. G ; Tiryakioglu, M ; Davami, P ; Kim, S. K ; Yoon, Y. O ; Yeom, G. Y ; Kim, N. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
An experiment was conducted to determine whether allowing an aluminum melt to solidify in the crucible and later remelting it would improve the quality of the melt and the casting. To investigate this, data were collected through reduced pressure test, density measurement, metallography, X-ray radiography and tensile testing and analyzed statistically. Results indicated that remelting improved the quality of the melt by reduction of the number of defects in the casting and their area and volume fractions. The improvement in elongation of remelted specimens was found to be statistically significant. Analysis of deformation characteristics showed that the improvement in elongation is due to...

Effect of Remelting Processes on Microstructure and Segregation in Inconel-100 Superalloys Produced by VIM

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahmadabadi, Morteza (Author) ; Tavakkoli, Ruhollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the present work, the effect of different methods of melting, remelting and solidification conditions on the microstructural evolution of IN100 superalloy was investigated. For this purpose, the superalloy was solidified within steel and ceramic molds to provide different cooling rates. Furthermore, the re-melting processes using ESR in the water circulated copper mold and ceramic molds, VAR and combined ESR and VAR were considered. The microstructure of alloy under different casting and remelting conditions were studied by means of optical and SEM microscopy and ESD analysis. According to our results, the ingot which was cast in the ceramic molds, due to lower cooling rate during...

Synthesis of a nanostructured MgH2-Ti alloy composite for hydrogen storage via combined vacuum arc remelting and mechanical alloying

    , Article Materials Letters ; Volume 65, Issue 7 , 2011 , Pages 1120-1122 ; 0167577X (ISSN) Mahmoudi, N ; Kaflou, A ; Simchi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
To improve the hydrogen kinetics of magnesium hydride, TiCr 1.2Fe0.6 alloy was prepared by vacuum arc remelting (VAR) and the alloy was co-milled with MgH2 to process nanostructured MgH2-5 at.% TiCr1.2Fe0.6 powder. The hydrogen desorption properties of the composite powder were studied and compared with pure magnesium hydride. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that the composite powder prepared by VAR/mechanical alloying (MA) procedure consisted of β-MgH2, γ-MgH2, bcc Ti-Cr-Fe alloy, and small amount of MgO. The average size of particles and their grain structure after 4 h MA were determined by a laser particle size analyzer and XRD method and found to be 194 nm and 11 nm,...

Effect of RE elements on the microstructural evolution of as cast and SIMA processed Mg-4Al alloy

    , Article Journal of Alloys and Compounds ; Volume 509, Issue 5 , February , 2011 , Pages 1567-1572 ; 09258388 (ISSN) Nayyeri, M. J ; Khomamizadeh, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In the present article, the effect of Rare Earth elements on the microstructural development of as cast and semisolid Mg-4Al alloy produced by SIMA process is studied. Investigation conducted by metallographic observation, scanning electron microscope and quantitative metallographic methods. Results showed that alloy's dendrites turn into larger fully dendritic shape with sharp and narrow arms from equiaxed rosette type as the amount of RE elements increased from 0 through 4%. The effect of RE elements on the microstructure of the treated-alloys was detectable through elimination of vast number of intragranular liquid droplets as well as by decreasing kinetic of microstructural changes. It...
