    Abstract
Protection system malfunction play a significant role in the sequence of events leading to power system blackouts. This paper describes power system reliability evaluation incorporating protection system failures. A reliability model is used in order to determine the impact of protection system failure on power system reliability. The mechanism and scheme of protection and their hidden failure are analyzed based on their contribution to the cascading outage after occurrence of a fault. A number of reliability indices such as LOLP, EENS and ECI are calculated to describe the impact of protection system failures on reliability of power system. © 2005 IEEE

    Abstract
One of the most important issues in planning the "reservoir" type of hydro-power plants (HPP) is to determine the installation capacity of the HPPs and estimate its annual energy value. In this paper, a method is presented. A computer program has been developed to analyze energy calculation and estimation of the most important economic indices of an HPP using the sensitivity analysis method. Another program, developed by Matlab software, calculates the reliability indices for a number of units of an HPP with a specified load duration curve using the Monte Carlo method. Ultimately, comparing the technical, economic and reliability indices will determine the installation capacity of an HPP. By...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Taheri, Sajjad (Author) ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, Mahmud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A high percentage of power grid faults occur in the distribution sector, which causes customers to experience power outages. In order to maintain a good reputation with customers and maximize their satisfaction, improving the reliability of the services provided in the electricity distribution network and minimizing related costs have always been one of the most important challenges for electricity network managers. Therefore, managers and legislators of the power network are always looking for a way to maintain the reliability level of the power distribution network and also to improve it. So far, many researchers have focused on setting goals with the help of average performance methods...

    Abstract
In power distribution systems, sometimes, system reliability indices are available, where some components' reliability parameters are unknown. This letter presents the inverse reliability evaluation (IRE) problem in radial distribution systems to find unknown components' parameters from the known system reliability indices. To this end, a nonlinear system of equations is presented and solved. The solutions are analyzed in the RBTS bus 2 to verify the applicability of the proposed approach and to show the importance of the IRE problem. © 1969-2012 IEEE

Development of a nodal effective load model considering transmission system element unavailabilities

    , Article IEE Proceedings: Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Volume 152, Issue 1 , 2005 , Pages 79-89 ; 13502360 (ISSN) Choi, J ; Billinton, R ; Futuhi Firuzabed, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
The paper illustrates an extended effective load model including the capacities and uncertainties of generators and transmission lines. The conventional effective load model only considers the uncertainties of generators. An extended ELDC (effective load duration curve) based on the effective load model is proposed in the paper. The proposed nodal ELDC is able to supply information on nodal indices for probabilistic production cost simulation and reliability evaluation at the load points in a power system. It is expected that the effective load model presented in the paper will prove useful in many problems dealing with nodal and decentralised operation and control of electric power systems...

Reliability and Economic Evaluation of Power System with Wind Power

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Karimi Taleb, Ali Asghar (Author) ; Oraee Mirzamani, Hashem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The demand for electrical energy is increasing. The main source of energy at this moment is fossil fuels. High price, great amount of pollution, uneven distribution and global warming are major disadvantages of fossil fuels. Using renewable resources can tackle these issues. Hence, the demand for renewable energy are highly increased. The wind energy is one type of renewable energy. Increasing the wind power penetration impairs the functionality of power system and causes the environmental issues. In order to have a stable power system this effect should be investigated thoroughly. Due to the inherent uncertain characteristics of wind energy, it is desirable to determine the characteristics...

Reliability improvement of distribution systems using SSVR

    , Article ISA Transactions ; Volume 48, Issue 1 , 2009 , Pages 98-106 ; 00190578 (ISSN) Hosseini, M ; Shayanfar, H. A ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper presents a reliability assessment algorithm for distribution systems using a Static Series Voltage Regulator (SSVR). Furthermore, this algorithm considers the effects of Distributed Generation (DG) units, alternative sources, system reconfiguration, load shedding and load adding on distribution system reliability indices. In this algorithm, load points are classified into 8 types and separated restoration times are considered for each class. Comparative studies are conducted to investigate the impacts of DG and alternative source unavailability on the distribution system reliability. For reliability assessment, the customer-oriented reliability indices such as SAIFI, SAIDI, CAIDI...

    Abstract
Reliability assessment of power systems is very vital particularly in the market-driven environment. As the power systems are nonlinear and large-scale systems, extracting their reliability indices involves much uncertainty. Calculation of power system reliability using stochastic methods is a complex and relatively difficult procedure. However, using fuzzy logic methods it would be possible to calculate the reliability in accordance with the existing uncertainties. In this paper, a new fuzzy logic based method is proposed to calculate the reliability indices of composite power systems. Then, the suggested method is examined on a sample network as a case study. © 2007 IEEE

    Abstract
Distributed generation is expected to play an increasing role in emerging power systems. They use different type of resources and technologies to serve energy to power system. DG has positive and negative effects for both the utilities and customers. System and load point reliability indices are normally improved if DG is installed in a distribution network. On the other hand, DG has some specific characteristics which distinguish it from conventional generating units. Therefore, they should not be treated as conventional generating units to perform reliability evaluation. An appropriate model is required to be developed in order to assess impacts of DG on reliability indices. Impacts of DG...
