Fast intra- and inter-prediction mode decision of H.264/AVC for medical frame compression based on region of interest

    , Article Australian Journal of Basic and Applied Sciences ; Volume 5, Issue 5 , 2011 , Pages 397-411 ; 19918178 (ISSN) Jafari, M ; Kasaei, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper aims at applying H.264/AVC in medical video compression applications and improving its compression performance with higher perceptual quality and lower coding complexity. We propose a new method that uses lossless compression in the region of interest (ROI) and very high rate lossy compression in other regions. The propose method achieves a fast intra- and interprediction mode decision that is based on encountering coarse MBs for intra- and inter- prediction mode decision of the background region and fine MBs for the ROI region. The MBs of the background region are encoded with the maximum quantization parameter allowed by H.264/AVC in order to maximize the number of null...

Multi-angle data acquisition to compensate transducer finite size in photoacoustic tomography

    Abstract
In photoacoustic tomography (PAT) systems, the tangential resolution decreases due to the finite size of the transducer as the off-center distance increases. To address this problem, we propose a multi-angle detection approach in which the transducer used for data acquisition rotates around its center (with specific angles) as well as around the scanning center. The angles are calculated based on the central frequency and diameter of the transducer and the radius of the region-of-interest (ROI). Simulations with point-like absorbers (for point-spread-function evaluation) and a vasculature phantom (for quality assessment), and experiments with ten 0.5 mm-diameter pencil leads and a leaf...

Fourier photoacoustic microscope improved resolution on single-pixel imaging

    , Article Applied Optics ; Volume 61, Issue 5 , 2022 , Pages 1219-1228 ; 1559128X (ISSN) Mostafavi, S. M ; Amjadian, M ; Kavehvash, Z ; Shabany, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A new single-pixel Fourier photoacoustic microscopy (PAM), to the best of our knowledge, is proposed to improve the resolution and region of interest (ROI) of an acquired image. In the previous structure of single-pixel Fourier PAM, called spatially invariant resolution PAM (SIR-PAM), the lateral resolution and ROI are limited by the digital micromirror device (DMD) pixel size and the number of pixels. This limitation is overcome here through illuminating fixed angle interfering plane waves, changing the fringe frequency via varying the frequency of the laser source. Given that the fringe sinusoidal patterns here can be produced by two mirrors, the DMD usage can be omitted. In this way, the...

A new ROI extraction method for FKP images using global intensity

    , Article 2012 6th International Symposium on Telecommunications, IST 2012 ; 2012 , Pages 1147-1150 ; 9781467320733 (ISBN) Ehteshami, N. S. M ; Tabandeh, M ; Fatemizadeh, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Finger-Knuckle-Print (FKP) is one of the newest biometrics. In this paper, a novel approach has been proposed to segment the Region of Interest (ROI) of a FKP image using the global intensity. This method upgrades the speed and accuracy of segmentation stage, as well as the pace of other steps of the procedure. This has been achieved by employing the area with maximum intensity in ROI extraction, instead of using the creases of the knuckle image. To confirm this improvement, lots of experiments have been performed and the method has been compared with the only existing schemes for ROI extraction suggested by Zhang and Kekre. At the end, the captured ROI images obtained by three methods have...

Estimating watermarking capacity in gray scale images based on image complexity

    , Article Eurasip Journal on Advances in Signal Processing ; Volume 2010 , December , 2010 ; 16876172 (ISSN) Yaghmaee, F ; Jamzad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Capacity is one of the most important parameters in image watermarking. Different works have been done on this subject with different assumptions on image and communication channel. However, there is not a global agreement to estimate watermarking capacity. In this paper, we suggest a method to find the capacity of images based on their complexities. We propose a new method to estimate image complexity based on the concept of Region Of Interest (ROI). Our experiments on 2000 images showed that the proposed measure has the best adoption with watermarking capacity in comparison with other complexity measures. In addition, we propose a new method to calculate capacity using proposed image...

    Abstract
One of the most important parameters in evaluating a watermarking algorithm is its capacity. In fact, capacity has a paradoxical relation with other two important parameters: image quality and robustness. Some works have been done on watermarking capacity and a few on image complexities. Most works on watermarking capacity is based on information theory and the capacity values which are calculated based on these methods are very tolerate. In this paper we propose a new method for calculating image complexity based on Region Of Interest (ROI) concept. After that we analyze three complexity measures named: Image compositional complexity (ICC), Quad tree and ROI method, with three different...

Freshness assessment of gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) by machine vision based on gill and eye color changes

    Abstract
The fish freshness was evaluated using machine vision technique through color changes of eyes and gills of farmed and wild gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata), being employed lightness (L*), redness (a *), yellowness (b*), chroma (c *), and total color difference (ΔE) parameters during fish ice storage. A digital color imaging system, calibrated to provide accurate CIELAB color measurements, was employed to record the visual characteristics of eyes and gills. The region of interest was automatically selected using a computer program developed in MATLAB software. L*, b *, and ΔE of eyes increased with storage time, while c* decreased. The a* parameter of fish eyes did not show clear a trend...

Content-Based medical image transmission against randomly-distributed passive eavesdroppers

    , Article 2021 IEEE International Conference on Communications Workshops, ICC Workshops 2021, 14 June 2021 through 23 June 2021 ; 2021 ; 9781728194417 (ISBN) Letafati, M ; Behroozi, H ; Hossein Khalaj, B ; Jorswieck, E. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, a content-aware medical image transmission scheme is investigated over a multiple-input single-output (MISO) channel in wireless healthcare systems. The multi-antenna-aided access point, as a source node, wishes to wirelessly send medical images of a patient to a trusted destination node, while multiple randomly-located totally passive and non-colluding eavesdroppers (Eves) try to wiretap the transmission. Considering the fact that not all regions of an image have the same importancy level from the security view-point, we first segment the image into two parts: the region of interest (RoI), which more likely contains important diagnostic information regarding the medical image...

Discriminating early stage AD patients from healthy controls using synchronization analysis of EEG

    , Article 2011 6th International Conference on Digital Information Management, ICDIM 2011 ; 2011 , Pages 282-287 ; 9781457715389 (ISBN) Jalili, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper we study how the meso-scale and micro-scale electroencephalography (EEG) synchronization measures can be used for discriminating patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease (AD) from normal control subjects. To this end, two synchronization measures, namely power spectral density and multivariate phase synchronization, are considered and the topography of the changes in patients vs. Controls is shown. The AD patients showed increased power spectral density in the frontal area in theta band and widespread decrease in the higher frequency bands. It was also characterized with decreased multivariate phase synchronization in the left fronto-temporal and medial regions, which was...

Gradient vector flow snake segmentation of breast lesions in dynamic contrast-enhanced MR images

    , Article 2010 17th Iranian Conference of Biomedical Engineering, ICBME 2010 - Proceedings, 3 November 2010 through 4 November 2010, Isfahan ; 2010 ; 9781424474844 (ISBN) Bahreini, L ; Fatemizadeh, E ; Gity, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The development of computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) for breast magnetic resonance (MR) images has encountered some big challenges. One of these challenges is related to breast lesion segmentation. Accurate segmentation of breast lesions has a vital role in other consequent applications such as feature extraction. Since malignant breast lesions typically appear with irregular borders and shapes in MR images whereas benign masses appear with more regular shapes, and smooth and lobulated borders, it seems that the accurate segmentation of breast lesion borders in MR images are important. To achieve this purpose, we have used the Gradient Vector Flow (GVF) snake segmentation method. This study...

Roi-based 3D human brain magnetic resonance images compression using adaptive mesh design and region-based discrete wavelet transform

    , Article International Journal of Wavelets, Multiresolution and Information Processing ; Volume 8, Issue 3 , 2010 , Pages 407-430 ; 02196913 (ISSN) Fatemizadeh, E ; Shooshtari, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Due to the large volume required for medical images for transmission and archiving purposes, the compression of medical images is known as one of the main concepts of medical image processing. Lossless compression methods have the drawback of a low compression ratio. In contrast, lossy methods have a higher compression ratio and suffer from lower quality of the reconstructed images in the receiver. Recently, some selective compression methods have been proposed in which the main image is divided into two separate regions: Region of Interest (ROI), which should be compressed in a lossless manner, and Region of Background (ROB), which is compressed in a lossy manner with a lower quality. In...

Fuzzy based algorithm for acoustic source localization using array of microphones

    , Article 2017 25th Iranian Conference on Electrical Engineering, ICEE 2017, 2 May 2017 through 4 May 2017 ; 2017 , Pages 2102-2105 ; 9781509059638 (ISBN) Faraji, M. M ; Bagheri Shouraki, S ; Iranmehr, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper focuses on localizing acoustic source using fuzzy logic. For this purpose, an array of microphones are used as sensors. The Time Delay Estimation (TDE) is performed by correlation between received signals from each pair of microphones. In this paper, instead of assuming a crisp value as a TDOA, we introduce fuzzy number of TDOA in which the absolute value of the cross correlation function is normalized and then assumed as TDOA membership function for each pair of microphones. Truth value of presenting acoustic source is computed in region of interest based on achieved TDOA membership functions. Computing this truth value is represented in this paper based on fuzzy logic. The...
