    Abstract
High-quality measurements of seismic activities around the world provide a wealth of data and information that are relevant to understanding of when earthquakes may occur. If viewed as complex stochastic time series, such data may be analyzed by methods that provide deeper insights into their nature, hence leading to better understanding of the data and their possible implications for earthquakes. In this paper, we provide further evidence for our recent proposal for the existence of a transition in the shape of the probability density function (PDF) of the successive detrended increments of the stochastic fluctuations of Earth's vertical velocity Vz, collected by broadband stations before...

Presumed Joint-PDF modelling for turbulent stratified flames

    , Article Flow, Turbulence and Combustion ; Volume 107, Issue 2 , 2021 , Pages 405-439 ; 13866184 (ISSN) Ghadimi, M ; Atayizadeh, H ; Salehi, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Turbulence–chemistry interaction models such as the conditional moment closure and various flamelet models require a presumed Probability Density Function (PDF) model of the conditioning variables. In turbulent stratified flames, a joint-PDF model for a reaction progress variable and the mixture fraction is required. The joint-PDF is often modelled by two beta functions using the first and second moments of the two conditioning variables. In this work, the performance of a joint-PDF model based on the flamelet PDF approach is compared to the double beta-PDF model. The conditional PDF of the reaction progress variable conditioned on mixture fraction is modelled with the flamelet PDF. Unlike...

Comparison of LMPs' Sensitivity under Payment Cost Minimization and Offer Cost Minimization Mechanisms

    , Article IEEE Systems Journal ; Volume 9, Issue 4 , January , 2015 , Pages 1507-1518 ; 19328184 (ISSN) Nouri, A ; Hosseini, S. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
There are different choices for auction and settlement mechanisms in electricity markets; however, selecting the appropriate mechanisms is too hard. Traditionally, the offer cost minimization (OCM) mechanism that minimizes the total offer cost is used as the clearing mechanism, and payments are calculated based on locational marginal prices (LMPs). Under this setup, the clearing and settlement mechanisms are inconsistent, since the minimized cost is different from the total payment cost. Some recent studies have proposed the payment cost minimization (PCM) mechanism. However, the discussion is still open, and different aspects of these mechanisms are yet needed to be analyzed. This paper...

    Abstract
In this paper, we experimentally investigate the statistical distribution of intensity fluctuations for underwater wireless optical channels under different channel conditions, namely fresh and salty underwater channels with and without air bubbles. To do so, we first measure the received optical signal with a large number of samples. Based on the normalized acquired data the channel coherence time and the fluctuations probability density function (PDF) are obtained for different channel scenarios. Our experimental results show that salt attenuates the received signal while air bubbles mainly introduce severe intensity fluctuations. Moreover, we observe that log-normal distribution precisely...

Source enumeration in large arrays using moments of eigenvalues and relatively few samples

    Abstract
This study presents a method based on minimum description length criterion to enumerate the incident waves impinging on a large array using a relatively small number of samples. The proposed scheme exploits the statistical properties of eigenvalues of the sample covariance matrix (SCM) of Gaussian processes. The authors use a number of moments of noise eigenvalues of the SCM in order to separate noise and signal subspaces more accurately. In particular, the authors assume a Marcenko-Pastur probability density function (pdf) for the eigenvalues of SCM associated with the noise subspace. We also use an enhanced noise variance estimator to reduce the bias leakage between the subspaces....

Probabilistic assessment of available transfer capacity via market linearization

    Abstract
Uncertainties associated with bus loading and components' availability lead to uncertainties in different system variables based on the system physical and economical relationships. Line flows, bus voltages, different prices, and other variables and indices, such as available transfer capacity (ATC), are stochastic and cannot be expressed as a determined quantity. Traditionally, in order to model the stochastic nature of power systems, a stochastic power flow algorithm is used. In this paper, stochastic-algebraic method is applied to find the probability density function (pdf) of ATC. The algorithm linearizes the optimal power flow formulation and uses Gram-Charlier expansion to find the pdf...

Statistical characterization of the output of nonlinear power-cubic detection unit for ultrashort light pulse communication in the presence of Gaussian noise

    , Article IWCIT 2015 - Iran Workshop on Communication and Information Theory ; 2015 ; 9781479982356 (ISBN) Ranjbar Zefreh, M ; Salehi, J. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, an accurate model for the probability density function (pdf) of the random decision variable Y in an ultrafast digital lightwave communication system, utilizing power-cubic all-optical nonlinear preprocessor is presented. The proposed model can replace the prevalent Gaussian approximation, as the accuracy of the latter is discredited by Monte-Carlo simulation. The Log-Pearson type-3 probability density function (LP3 pdf) is shown to appropriately represents the random decision variable Y. Three characteristic parameters of the LP3 pdf are also obtained through the three moments of the decision variable Y. Finally, the system error probability is revisited using the obtained...

The effects of enviromental parameters on wind turbine power PDF curve

    , Article IEEE Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering, CCECE 2008, Niagara Falls, ON, 4 May 2008 through 7 May 2008 ; 2008 , Pages 1193-1197 ; 08407789 (ISSN) ; 9781424416431 (ISBN) Jafarian, M ; Soroudi, A ; Ehsan, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, the effects of different environmental parameters on power probability density function (PDF) curve and annual energy production of a wind turbine are studied. In each step one of these parameters is changed, and in each case, Wind turbine and wind speed is simulated and produced power has been calculated in every hours of one year. At last it was concluded that altitude above sea level (that affects the air density) and the k factor of weibull distribution have more important effects on wind turbine produced power than the others. © 2008 IEEE

Compromising wind and solar energies from the power system adequacy viewpoint

    Abstract
Miscellaneous sorts of renewable energies, despite of their positive impacts on the power system operation cost and environmental concerns, could jeopardize the system reliability due to introducing significant degrees of intermittency and uncertainty. This challenge could be overcome by composing various sources of renewable energies with complimentary natures. This paper devises an explicit mathematical framework to compromise the contribution of wind and solar energies. The optimization problem is to maximize the system reliability subject to a fixed monetary investment associated with both wind and solar. The problem formulation is based on mixed-integer programming (MIP) format in which...
