    , Article Recent Patents on Chemical Engineering ; Volume 6, Issue 2 , August , 2013 , Pages 107-115 ; 18744788 (ISSN) Hedayati Moghaddam, A ; Sargolzaei, J ; Shayegan, J ; Bahadori, T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Physical separation methods, especially membrane technology, can be a good substitute for biological wastewater treatment, due to its simple constructions and operations. There are many papers and patents in this field. Membranes need to be cleaned periodically to be able to operate economically, and need to be replaced after a while. Several factors can influence the membrane cleaning procedure, including pressure of backwash, acid and base concentration, duration of forward washing, and duration of acid-base backwashing. In this study the effect of these parameters was investigated to find an optimum condition which could result in a good polyethersulphone (PES) membrane cleaning with less...

    Abstract
In this work the effects of backwash pressure, duration of acid and sodium hydroxide backwashing, sodium hydroxide concentration, and the duration of forward washing on performance of permeate flux recovery (PFR) were investigated. A two-level fractional factorial design (FFD) was used to design the experiments. The ability of back propagation neural network (BPNN) and radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) in predicting the performance of cleaning-in-place (CIP) of hydrophilic polyethersulfone (PES) membrane were investigated. It is found that BPNN has better ability in predicting the PFR performance than RBFNN. The best architecture of BPNN was a network consisting of 1 hidden layer...

    Abstract
Application of organic−inorganic nanocomposite membranes for water treatment is exceptionally growing owing to their tunable functionalities in addition to their enhanced permeation and antifouling propensity. In the present work, novel nanocomposite polyethersulfone (PES) membrane was synthesized using antimony-doped tin oxide (ATO) nanoparticles (NPs) via phase separation technique. It was found that the modified PES-ATO nanocomposite membranes exhibited significantly higher fouling resistance and larger permeate flux recovery ratio when tested with oil sands produced water than unmodified PES membranes. Furthermore, the PES-ATO membranes provided 40% more organic matter removal compared...

Preparation and characterization of SAPO-34 nanoparticles-mixed matrix membranes (MMM) via combined phase separation method for CO2/CH4 gas separation application

    , Article Technical Proceedings of the NSTI Nanotechnology Conference and Expo, NSTI-Nanotech ; Vol. 1 , 2014 , pp. 253-256 ; ISBN: 9781482258264 Jahanbakhsh Asl, H ; Soltanieh, M ; Azadi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Phase separation is one of the common methods for fabrication of polymeric membrane, which classifies into the categories of Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS) and Nonsolvent Induced Phase Separation (NIPS), i.e. heat and mass transfer induced phase separation, respectively. NIPS has been applied more commonly than TIPS, but the membranes which have resulted from this technique have macro finger-like voids, weak mechanical strength and not high separation ability in comparison with the TIPS. In contrast, membranes produced by the TIPS method have micro scale pores, high mechanical strength and also high separation capability, however, polymeric solutions prepared at high temperatures...

Preparation and characterization of PES and PSU membrane humidifiers

    , Article Journal of Membrane Science ; Volume 383, Issue 1-2 , 2011 , Pages 197-205 ; 03767388 (ISSN) Samimi, A ; Mousavi, S. A ; Moallemzadeh, A ; Roostaazad, R ; Hesampour, M ; Pihlajamaki, A ; Manttari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Polysulfone (PSU) and polyethersulfone (PES) porous membranes; and mixed polymer with nanoparticles TiO2, were prepared for air humidification. The mechanical properties and morphology of these membranes were studied by Tensile tester and SEM/EDX. The effects of membrane composition and operating factors on humidifier performance were investigated. The results revealed that the membrane composition and its structure have significant effect on humidification. The porous membranes with finger type cavities had higher humidification performance but lower mechanical properties. Water flux of the membranes was about 0.16-0.2L/hm2 at 25°C. Furthermore, adding 0.1wt% TiO2 nanoparticles to casting...

Gas-liquid membrane contactors: effects of polymer concentration and solvent type on pore size distribution

    , Article Journal of Membrane Science ; Volume 563 , 2018 , Pages 813-819 ; 03767388 (ISSN) Zolfaghari, A ; Mousavi, S. A ; Bozorgmehri Bozarjomehri, R ; Bakhtiari, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This study investigates the effects of polymer concentration and solvent type on the pore size distribution (PSD) of the fabricated gas-liquid membrane contactors (MCs). Eighteen flat-sheet MCs are fabricated using polysulfone (PSf) and polyethersulfone (PES) polymers, with polymer concentration of 10%, 15%, and 20%. Dimethylformamide (DMF) and n-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) solvents are used to prepare the polymeric solutions. The role of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) on the mean pore size of MCs is also studied. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis is applied to visualize the pore system of the fabricated MCs. Image processing technique is used to obtain the PSD of the fabricated MCs...

    Abstract
In the present study, dual layers mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were prepared by incorporating aminated-Fe3O4 nanoparticles into the chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol nanofibers over the polyethersulfone (PES) membrane for the removal of Cr(VI) and Pb(II) ions in batch adsorption and membrane processes. The synthesized aminated-Fe3O4 nanoparticles were characterized using XRD, FESEM and FTIR analysis. The morphology and roughness of membranes were determined using SEM, TEM and AFM analysis. The effect of adsorption operating parameters such as pH (2–7), contact time (0–60 min), initial concentration of metal ions (20–1000 mgL−1) and temperature (30–50 °C) on the Cr(VI) and Pb(II) ions sorption was...

    Abstract
In present work, first, the water-stable metal–organic framework (MOF) nanocrystals, UiO-66-(F)4, were synthesized under green reaction condition and then some PES/PA thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes were prepared using this synthesized nanocrystals (as modifier) and polyethersulfone (as the substrate). The obtained MOF and membranes were characterized by various characterization techniques such as FE-SEM, AFM, PXRD, contact angle measurements and FT-IR spectroscopy. Finally, the forward osmosis performance of the resultant membranes was evaluated by using different concentrations of NaCl as a draw solution and deionized water as a feed solution. Among all used membranes, the membrane...

    Abstract
In this paper we introduce novel strategy for antibody immobilization using high surface area electrospun nanofibrous membrane based on ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-carbodiimide/N-hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS) coupling chemistry. To present the high performance of proposed biosensors, anti-staphylococcus enterotoxin B (anti-SEB) was used as a model to demonstrate the utility of our proposed system. Polymer solution of polyethersolfone was used to fabricate fine nanofibrous membrane. Moreover, industrial polyvinylidene fluoride membrane and conventional microtiter plate were also used to compare the efficiency of antibody immobilization. Scanning electron microscopy images were taken to...
