    Abstract
Background: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disorder with a complex etiology. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been shown to affect pathoetiology of periodontitis. We aimed at identification of expression of five lncRNAs, namely Linc0116, Linc00667, CDK6-AS1, FENDRR and DIRC3 in the circulation and gingival tissues of these patients compared with healthy controls. Methods: In a pilot case–control study, we compared expressions of Linc0116, Linc00667, CDK6-AS1, FENDRR and DIRC3 lncRNAs between blood and tissue samples of patients with periodontitis and healthy controls using real time quantitative PCR technique. The present work was performed on samples got from 26 patients with...

Finding assignable cause in medium voltage network by statistical process control

    , Article IET Conference Publications ; Volume 2013, Issue 615 CP , 2013 ; 9781849197328 (ISBN) Eini, B. J ; Mirzavand, M ; Mahdloo, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The current of outgoing feeders are very important data transmitted over SCADA system. Monitoring of these currents can help dispatching engineers to detect abnormality in energy consumption trend and minor faults in distribution network. Statistical process control (SPC) is one of the capable approaches which can be used for this purpose. Statistical process control is based on categorizing variations into assignable causes and random causes. In current paper we described the methods which were used for finding assignable causes in load trend and short time load variation in Alborz province power distribution company pilot project. Although this approach is not developed completely and some...

    Abstract
Sulfur Mustard (SM) is a potent alkylating agent and its effects on cells and tissues are varied and complex. Due to limitations in the diagnostics of sulfur mustard exposed individuals (SMEIs) by noninvasive approaches, there is a great necessity to develop novel techniques and biomarkers for this condition. We present here the first nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) metabolic profiling of serum from and healthy controls to identify novel biomarkers in blood serum for better diagnostics. Of note, SMEIs were exposed to SM 30 years ago and that differences between two groups could still be found. Pathways in which differences between SMEIs and...

Treatment of beet sugar wastewater by UAFB bioprocess

    , Article Bioresource Technology ; Volume 98, Issue 16 , 2007 , Pages 3080-3083 ; 09608524 (ISSN) Farhadian, M ; Borghei, M ; Umrania, V. V ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
The aim of this work was to study the treatment of strong beet sugar wastewater by an upflow anaerobic fixed bed (UAFB) at pilot plant scale. Three fixed bed bioreactors (each 60 L) were filled with standard industrial packing, inoculated with anaerobic culture (chicken manure, cow manure, anaerobic sludge digested from domestic wastewater) and operated at 32-34 °C with 20 h hydraulic retention time (HRT) and influent COD ranging between 2000-8000 mg/L. Under these conditions the maximum efficiency of organic content reduction in the reactor ranged from 75% to 93%. The reactor filled with standard pall rings made of polypropylene with an effective surface area of 206 m2/m3 performed best in...

The metabolomics signature associated with responsiveness to steroid therapy in focal segmental glomerulosclerosis: A pilot study

    , Article Revista de Investigacion Clinica ; Volume 71, Issue 2 , 2019 , Pages 106-115 ; 00348376 (ISSN) Chashmniam, S ; Kalantari, S ; Nafar, M ; Boroumandnia, N ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Background: Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is considered one of the most severe glomerular diseases and around 80% of cases are resistant to steroid treatment. Since a large proportion of steroid-resistant (SR) FSGS patients progress to end-stage renal disease, other therapeutic strategies may benefit this population. However, identification of non-invasive biomarkers to predict this high-risk population is needed. Objective: We aimed to identify the biomarker candidates to distinguish SR from steroid-sensitive (SS) patients using metabolomics approach and to identify the possible molecular mechanism of resistance. Methods: Urine was collected from biopsy-proven FSGS patients...

Behavior of olfactory-related frontal lobe oscillations in Alzheimer's disease and MCI: A pilot study

    , Article International Journal of Psychophysiology ; Volume 175 , 2022 , Pages 43-53 ; 01678760 (ISSN) Fatemi, S. N ; Aghajan, H ; Vahabi, Z ; Afzal, A ; Sedghizadeh, M. J ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Slow-gamma (35-45 Hz) phase synchronization and the coupling between slow-gamma and low-frequency theta oscillations (4–8 Hz) are closely related to memory retrieval and cognitive functions. In this pilot study, we assess the Phase Amplitude Coupling (PAC) between theta and slow-gamma oscillatory bands and the quality of synchronization in slow-gamma oscillations using Phase Locking Value (PLV) on EEG data from healthy individuals and patients diagnosed with amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment (aMCI) and Alzheimer's Disease (AD) during an oddball olfactory task. Our study indicates noticeable differences between the PLV and PAC values corresponding to olfactory stimulation in the three groups...

Bed mixing and leachate recycling strategies to overcome pressure drop buildup in the biofiltration of hydrogen sulfide

    , Article Bioresource Technology ; Volume 109 , 2012 , Pages 26-30 ; 09608524 (ISSN) Roshani, B ; Torkian, A ; Aslani, H ; Dehghanzadeh, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The effects of leachate recycling and bed mixing on the removal rate of H 2S from waste gas stream were investigated. The experimental setup consisted of an epoxy-coated three-section biofilter with an ID of 8cm and effective bed height of 120cm. Bed material consisted of municipal solid waste compost and PVC bits with an overall porosity of 54% and dry bulk density of 0.456gcm -3. Leachate recycling had a positive effect of increasing elimination capacity (EC) up to 21gSm -3 bedh -1 at recycling rates of 75mld -1, but in the bed mixing period EC declined to 8g Sm -3bedh -1. Pressure drop had a range of zero to 18mm H 2Om -1 in the course of leachate recycling. Accumulation of sulfur reduced...
