Two effective hybrid metaheuristic algorithms for minimization of multimodal functions

    , Article International Journal of Computer Mathematics ; Volume 88, Issue 11 , 2011 , Pages 2415-2428 ; 00207160 (ISSN) Babaie Kafaki, S ; Ghanbari, R ; Mahdavi Amiri, N ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Global optimization problems naturally arise from many applications. We propose two hybrid metaheuristic algorithms for finding a global optimum of a continuous function. Our proposed algorithms are hybridizations of genetic algorithm (GA) and variable neighbourhood search (VNS). To increase the efficiency of our algorithms, for smooth functions we present an effective locally improving line search procedure, and for non-smooth functions, we use the simplex method proposed by Nelder and Mead. By use of the recently adopted non-parametric statistical tests of Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney for analysing the behaviour of evolutionary algorithms, we compare both the efficiency and the...

    Abstract
In this paper, we investigate the secrecy throughput for a full-duplex wireless powered communication network. A multi-antenna base station (BS) transmits energy towards nodes all the time and each node harvests energy prior to its transmission time slot. Nodes sequentially transmit their confidential information to the BS in presence of other nodes which are considered as potential eavesdroppers. We derive the secrecy rate and formulate the sum secrecy throughput optimization of all nodes. The optimization variables are the time slot duration and the BS beamforming during different transmission phases. The problem is non-convex and non-trivial. We propose a suboptimal approach in which the...

    Abstract
This paper describes optimization of the combustion chamber geometry and injection timing of a new generation of EF7 engine, where CNG is directly injected to the combustion chamber, with the aim of providing the best mixture at low and high speeds. The Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA) is coupled with the KIVA Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code, with grid generation, in order to maximize the flammable mass of the mixture. This would result in better combustion and improved fuel economy. The optimization variables related to the combustion chamber are seven geometry variables and injection timing. Through the present optimization, a great improvement in mixture distribution is...

Geometrical optimization of the overlap in mixed adhesive lap joints

    , Article Journal of Adhesion ; Volume 89, Issue 12 , 2013 , Pages 948-972 ; 00218464 (ISSN) Bavi, O ; Bavi, N ; Shishesaz, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
The aim of this research is to optimize the geometry of the overlap in mixed adhesive single-and double-lap joints using a modified version of Bees and Genetic Algorithms (BA and GA). Accounting for adherends Poisson's ratio in the deduced equilibrium equations, the proposed shear lag model gives a more accurate approximation of joint failure load in comparison with Volkersen's solution. The objective functions used in this work are used separately to maximize the load bearing capacity f and the specific strength (f/w) of the joint. This procedure is applied to optimize aeronautical adhesively bonded assemblies, while taking manufacturing constraints into account. The employed constraints...

Obtaining uniform cooling on a hot surface by a novel swinging slot impinging jet

    , Article Applied Thermal Engineering ; Volume 150 , 2019 , Pages 781-790 ; 13594311 (ISSN) Bijarchi, M. A ; Eghtesad, A ; Afshin, H ; Shafii, M. B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2019
    Abstract
In this study, a novel 2D laminar Swinging Slot Impinging Jet (SSIJ) on a heated flat surface was investigated using numerical simulation. The impinging jet was introduced to improve the uniform cooling of a hot surface while enhancing the heat transfer rate by disrupting the boundary layer. The impinging jet moves along the target surface similar to the swinging motion of a pendulum. The effects of Reynolds number, dimensionless jet to target distance, maximum angle of swinging, and frequency of jet oscillations were studied, and physics of the new impinging jet were fully discussed. Lastly, optimization was undertaken to search for the optimal variables leading to uniform heat fluxes. A...

Multi-objective optimization approach toward conceptual design of gas turbine combustor

    , Article Applied Thermal Engineering ; Volume 148 , 2019 , Pages 1210-1223 ; 13594311 (ISSN) Saboohi, Z ; Ommi, F ; Akbari, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper focused on the conceptual design of a conventional gas turbine combustor via the multi-objective optimization approach. The suggested method integrated the design and estimation of the performance of the combustion chamber. The geometry and performance parameters could be found by applying the design tool. According to the level of available information in the primary phases of the design process, a chemical reactor network approach for modeling the combustion was chosen; thus, the droplet evaporation of the liquid fuel and unmixedness of the fuel-air mixture in the primary zone was modeled. The results obtained from the design tool for the two annular combustors were compared...

Multi-objective robust design optimization (MORDO) of an aeroelastic high-aspect-ratio wing

, Article Journal of the Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering ; Volume 42, Issue 11 , 2020 Elyasi, M ; Roudbari, A ; Hajipourzadeh, P ; Sharif University of Technology
Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH  2020
    Abstract
In this paper, a new approach for multi-objective robust optimization of flutter velocity and maximum displacement of the wing tip are investigated. The wing is under the influence of bending–torsion coupling and its design variables have different levels of uncertainty. In designing and optimizing wings with a high aspect ratio, the optimization process can be done in such a way to increase the flutter velocity, but this can increase the amplitude of the wing tip displacement to a point that leads to the wings damage and structural failure. Therefore, single-objective design optimization may lead to infeasible designs. Thus, for multi-objective optimization, modeling is based on the...

    Abstract
We investigate the problem of energy-efficient resource allocation constrained to quality of service and physical requirements in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based elastic optical networks and propose a fast two-stage algorithm to solve it. The first stage of the proposed algorithm deals with routing, traffic grooming, and traffic ordering and mainly aims at minimization of the number of deployed optical amplifiers and transponders. We provide an integer linear program for routing and traffic grooming and propose a heuristic procedure, which yields its near-optimum solution in a shorter runtime. In the second stage, we optimize transponder parameters to minimize total...
