    , Article Arabian Journal for Science and Engineering ; Volume 44, Issue 3 , 2019 , Pages 2579-2596 ; 2193567X (ISSN) Karimi, B ; Akhavan Niaki, S. T ; Haleh, H ; Naderi, B ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Tool reliability is one of the most important issues in a flexible manufacturing system. If a tool fails to operate correctly, the performance of the manufacturing system is reduced, the due date may be violated, or the product quality falls behind the standards. This paper develops a bi-objective mathematical model for tool selection in a flexible manufacturing system in order to optimize both reliability and cost. The tools in these environments are considered to have increasing failure rates as they are used over time; a case closer to reality. This paper aims to evaluate the availability of different tools used in a production system, in which the reliability of a tool is dependent on...

Curvilinear fiber optimization tools for aeroelastic design of composite wings

    , Article Journal of Fluids and Structures ; Volume 33 , 2012 , Pages 180-190 ; 08899746 (ISSN) Haddadpour, H ; Zamani, Z ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2012
    Abstract
The aeroelastic design of composite wings modeled as thin-walled beams is investigated through the use of curvilinear fiber. The structural model considers non-classical effects such as transverse shear, warping restraint, rotary inertia, nonuniform torsional model and also aerodynamic loads based on Wagner's function. In this paper, a linear spanwise variation of the fiber orientation resulting in a variable-stiffness structure is used to optimize the wing for maximum aeroelastic instability speed purpose, while manufacturing constraints are incorporated. Numerical results indicate improvements of aeroelastic stability of variable-stiffness wings over conventional, constant-stiffness ones

Optimization assisted asphaltene deposition modeling in porous media during a natural depletion scheme

    , Article Petroleum Science and Technology ; Volume 30, Issue 9 , Mar , 2012 , Pages 958-965 ; 10916466 (ISSN) Hematfar, V ; Bagheri, M ; Kharrat, R ; Ghazanfari, M ; Ghotbi, C ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Changes in thermodynamic properties such as pressure, temperature, and composition may result in asphaltene precipitation and deposition in porous media. In addition, asphaltene deposition can cause wettability alteration, permeability reduction, and ultimately a decrease in the productivity of a reservoir. Natural depletion is one of the most common processes of asphaltene deposition in which pressure changes destabilize the dissolved asphaltene in the oil and settle them onto the rock surface. In this work, natural depletion experiments in consolidated core samples were performed under simulated reservoir conditions to obtain reliable data and analyze the asphaltene deposition mechanisms....

    Abstract
This paper investigates the problem of assembly line balancing problem, in which the products in the production line may undergo to be reworked on the current task. Since the real manufacturing systems deal with the stochastic nature of the items in production lines, this paper considers the simple assembly line balancing problem type 2 (SALBP-II) under the conditions of stochastic processing time of tasks and the element of reworking system. Exposing to the stochastic conditions encouraged us to handle the problem via simulation optimization procedure, which uses the well known genetic algorithm as an optimization tool. Results show the adaptation and effectiveness of GA to considered...

Optimal placement of PMUs to maintain network observability using a modified BPSO algorithm

    , Article International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems ; Volume 33, Issue 1 , January , 2011 , Pages 28-34 ; 01420615 (ISSN) Hajian, M ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Amraee, T ; Mozafari, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
This paper presents a novel approach to optimal placement of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) for state estimation. At first, an optimal measurement set is determined to achieve full network observability during normal conditions, i.e. no PMU failure or transmission line outage. Then, in order to consider contingency conditions, the derived scheme in normal conditions is modified to maintain network observability after any PMU loss or a single transmission line outage. Observability analysis is carried out using topological observability rules. A new rule is added that can decrease the number of required PMUs for complete system observability. A modified Binary Particle Swarm Optimization...

Optimization of microgrooves for water–solid drag reduction using genetic algorithm

    Abstract
The friction on the water–solid interfaces continues to be the most important factor for the energy loss in many marine and submarine applications. Therefore, different techniques have been developed and are available to reduce friction and, as a result, the overall cost. In the past decades, the use of structured surfaces has been given considerable attention because of their specific characteristics such as their abilities in pressure drop reduction. However, an appropriate optimization method is required to find the best surface structure. In the present study, we consider a microgrooved substrate and examine the performance of three shapes including rectangular, elliptical, and...

Optimal placement of phasor measurement units: Particle swarm optimization approach

    , Article 2007 International Conference on Intelligent Systems Applications to Power Systems, ISAP ; 2007 ; 9860130868 (ISBN); 9789860130867 (ISBN) Hajian, M ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Amraee, T ; Shirani, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper is concerned about the optimal placement of phasor measurement units (PMUs) so as to make a system completely observable. Observability assessment is done by the aid of the topological observability rules. Moreover a new rule is added which can decrease the number of required PMUs for complete system observability. A modified binary particle swarm is used as an optimization tool for obtaining the minimal number of PMUs and corresponding configuration. In order to improve the speed of convergence, an initial PMU placement is provided by graph-theoretic procedure. The simulation results of proposed approach are presented for several IEEE test systems

Thermodynamic optimization of design variables and heat exchangers layout in HRSGs for CCGT, using genetic algorithm

    , Article Applied Thermal Engineering ; Volume 29, Issue 2-3 , 2009 , Pages 290-299 ; 13594311 (ISSN) Mohagheghi, M ; Shayegan, J ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) is one of the few equipments that are custom made for combined cycle power plants, and any change in its design affects all performance parameters of a steam cycle directly. Thus providing an optimization tool to optimize its design parameters and the layout of its heat exchangers is of great importance. A new method is introduced for modeling a steam cycle in advanced combined cycles by organizing non-linear equations and their simultaneous solutions by use of the hybrid Newton methods in this article. Thereafter, optimal thermodynamic performance conditions for HRSGs are calculated with the help of the genetic algorithm. In the conclusion, the...
