    Performance analysis of an optical beam-forming network with custom microwave CAD tools

    Abstract
    Next generation wideband and ultra-wideband radar antenna arrays need efficient true-time delay networks for array control. Optical beam-forming networks have been considered as a promising solution in such arrays. Performance analysis of optical beam-formers is thus quiet necessary. In this paper signal to noise ratio and dynamic range of simple optical beam-forming structures are investigated with a custom microwave CAD tool. Two structures with optical and RF power combining methods are discussed. With the proposed devices' parameters, the optical combining method shows better performance for low and moderate optical powers  

    Indoor wireless infrared channel characterization by measurements

    Abstract
    Use of infrared light for indoor wireless communications has received considerable attention recently. In this paper, we present results obtained from a large set of measurements performed at the University of Ottawa. We investigate impacts of receiver rotation and shadowing on the properties of indoor infrared channels. This paper contains a description of a measurement system developed and used throughout the experiments. Measurement results are used to find and present methods to estimate variations of channel path loss for small changes in the receiver direction, using statistical techniques.     Abstract
    This paper presents a top-down approach to the design of all-silicon CMOS-based fully integrated optical receivers. From the system-level requirements, we determine the optimum block-level specifications, based on which the individual building blocks are designed. Measurement results of the manufactured design show operation at data rates exceeding 2.5-Gbps/channel for the detector, the amplification and the clock and data recovery circuits. This proof of concept is the first step towards design optimized, completely integrated, multi-channel optical receivers for high-bandwidth short-distance chip-to-chip interconnects. © 2006 IEEE  

    Non-linear effects of intensity-modulated and directly detected optical links on receiving a linear frequency-modulated waveform

    Abstract
    Limitations imposed by the non-linearity of optical links, in the front end of a receiving array antenna, on the performance of a pulse compression radar are studied. Particularly linear frequency-modulated waveforms backscattered from a pair of targets are inspected. Inter-modulation and gain compression by noise are presented as two remarkable phenomena. For an interconnection of two dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulators, the sensitivity of the compressed echo at the output of a matched filter receiver to certain tunable parameters is studied numerically. Finally, certain values of DC bias and phase shift between the modulators' electrodes are recommended

    Abstract Elastic optical networking has recently been proposed for use in optical transport networks to cope with increasingly heterogeneous and dynamic demand patterns. In this paper, we study the blocking performance of a multi-class elastic optical link for which a demand needs to be allocated a contiguous subset of the entire spectrum. This problem is different than the well-known blocking problem in multi-class multi-server loss systems due to the contiguous allocation constraint.     In this paper, we extract analytical models for data transmission delay, power consumption, and energy dissipation of optical and traditional NoCs. Utilizing extracted models, we compare optical NoC with electrical one for varying values of link length and degree of multiplexing and calculate lower bound limit on the optical link length below which optical on-chip network loses its efficiency. Based on this constraint, we propose a novel hierarchical on-chip network architecture, named as H2NoC, which benefits from optical transmissions in large scale SoCs and overcomes the scalability problem resulted from lower bound limit on the optical link length.     This paper considers the possibility and the details of implementing adaptive networks with visible light communication technology. Adaptive networks have various indoor and outdoor applications hence, their implementations with light waves face with different problems. Almost all free space optical (FSO)communication systems must deal with two channel deficiencies namely, optical noise and channel turbulence.     In this paper, we introduce and investigate a cellular underwater wireless optical code division multiple-access (OCDMA) network based on optical orthogonal codes (OOC). The structures, principles, and performance of the underwater wireless OCDMA network in various water types are presented.
