    Abstract
    In the present study, numerical simulation is used to evaluate the influence of the non-uniform magnetic field on the heat transfer of magnetic nanofluids inside a pinned channel. This article focused on the flow pattern and heat transfer of water-based nanofluids in the presence of a wire in a three-dimensional geometry. In this work, the fluid flow is laminar and constant heat flux is applied on the wall of the channel. A wire in various orientations, in comparison with the axis of the channel, generates the magnetic field.     Abstract
    In high speed machining of hard materials, tools with chamfered edge and materials resistant to diffusion wear are commonly used. In this paper, the influence of cutting edge geometry on the chip removal process is studied through numerical simulation of cutting with sharp, chamfered or blunt edges and with carbide and CBN tools. The analysis is based on the use of ALE finite element method for continuous chip formation process. Simulations include cutting with tools of different chamfer angles and cutting speeds. The study shows that a region of trapped material zone is formed under the chamfer and acts as the effective cutting edge of the tool, in accordance with experimental observations....

    Electrical impedance tomography is a simple and economic medical imaging technology which permits regional assessment of the electrical properties of organs within the body based on measurements made from electrodes on the surface of the body. Block method is a new solution for electrical impedance tomography used to enhance image resolution and to improve reconstruction algorithm.     This study presents a hybrid harmony search algorithm (HHSA) to solve engineering optimization problems with continuous design variables. Although the harmony search algorithm (HSA) has proven its ability of finding near global regions within a reasonable time, it is comparatively inefficient in performing local search.     This paper considers a two-level supply chain consisting of one warehouse and one retailer. Unlike the most similar models which determine the optimal ordering policy according to inventory cost only, in this model, we also consider the transportation cost. We assume that the demand rate at the retailer is known and the demand is confined to a single item. Shortages are allowed neither at the retailer nor at the warehouse. The objective is to find the economic order quantities for both the retailer and the warehouse which minimize the total cost.     We find exact solutions for a universal set of quantum gates on a scalable candidate for quantum computers, namely an array of two-level systems. The gates are constructed by a combination of dynamical and geometrical (non-Abelian) phases. Previously these gates have been constructed mostly on nonscalable systems and by numerical searches among the loops in the manifold of control parameters of the Hamiltonian. © 2005 The American Physical Society

    This paper reports the results of SIMD implementation of a number of interpolation algorithms on common personal computers. These methods fit a curve on some given input points for which a mathematical function form is not known. We have implemented four widely used methods using vector processing capabilities embedded in Pentium processors. By using SSE (streaming SIMD extension) we could perform all operations on four packed single-precision (32-bit) floating point values simultaneously.     Abstract
    In this article, the edge-zone equation of Mindlin-Reissner plate theory, for composite plates laminated of transversely isotropic layers is studied. Analytical solutions are obtained for both circular sector and completely circular plates with various boundary conditions. The boundary-layer function and its effect on the stresses are numerically studied. Effects of plate thickness and boundary conditions are investigated. The results for circular and completely circular plates are exactly the same as those of rectangular plates in our previous work.     Alumina is widely used as a vacuum ceramic separator in the pillbox-type output window of high-power electron tubes. The fracture of alumina is one of the most important factors in the failure of these tubes. In this article, the fracture process of alumina in the pillbox-type window of high-power electron tubes is assessed microscopically.
