    Abstract
The free vibration analysis of rotating axially functionally graded nanobeams under an in-plane nonlinear thermal loading is provided for the first time in this paper. The formulations are based on Timoshenko beam theory through Hamilton’s principle. The small-scale effect has been considered using the nonlocal Eringen’s elasticity theory. Then, the governing equations are solved by generalized differential quadrature method. It is supposed that the thermal distribution is considered as nonlinear, material properties are temperature dependent, and the power-law form is the basis of the variation of the material properties through the axial of beam. Free vibration frequencies obtained are...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khatami Mazgar, Saeed (Author) ; Ahmadian, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The use of carbon nanotubes in Nano-switches is the new technology employed in NEMS. Nano-switches can also perform as a micro-switch where nano-switches have longer life time, consume lower power and have smaller size with respect to micro-switches. As the dimensions get smaller, continuous models lose their accuracy and molecular methods should be utilized. Non local theory, is attempting to change the responses of continuum models assuaging them to the molecular results. In the current project, non local theory is used to rewrite the governing equations of nano tubes motion and the results are compared with the classical results. In this modeling, the axial force and the mid-plane...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology khosravani, Ehsan (Author) ; Ahmadian, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor) ; Mehdigholi, Hamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Atomic force microscope (AFM) has a significant capability of imaging surface topography on an atomic scale. It is also widely used for Nanolithography in MEMS/NEMS (micro/nanoelectromechanical systems). Although the conventional AFMs have a significant capability of nano-scale surface measurements, their probe tips cannot come in close proximity to the sidewalls, no matter how sharp they are. Therefore, no accurate nano-scale measurements at sidewalls and edges can be achieved by these conventional AFMs. In addition, regarding the increasing applications of micro-structures such as micro nozzles, micro gears, micro holes and micro trenches which all of them have sidewalls and edges,...

Vibration and Dynamic Analysis of a Micro/Nano Beam Made of Functionally Graded Materials Subjected to an External Load Using the Non-Local Theory

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moheimani, Reza (Author) ; Ahmadian, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor) ; Zohoor, Hassan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays functionally graded materials (FGM's) are widely used in different engineering applications such as aerospace, solid mechanics And biomechanics among others. FGM's are inhomogeneous composites made of two different materials, usually a metal and a ceramic with continuous variation of properties. Recently these materials according to their special characteristics are used in micro and nano electro mechanical systems. As size decreases in mechanical systems due to interatomic forces, energy balance law won't be valid locally and therefore classical equations of elasticity may not be used anymore. To overcome this problem, nonlocal theories of elasticity were initiated in works of...

The results indicate that the non-local parameter has a decreasing effect on the frequency while the power index has an increasing effect. It is also noted that the effect of the axial load is increasing too

On the validity of peridynamic equation of motion in variable horizon domains

    , Article International Journal of Mechanical Sciences ; Volume 195 , 2021 ; 00207403 (ISSN) Nikpayam, J ; Kouchakzadeh, M. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2021
    Abstract
Peridynamics is a nonlocal theory of solid mechanics which is suitable for modeling discontinuities and fractures without requiring external theories. In the original peridynamic equation of motion, the internal forces are integrated over the entire domain of the body. Although this equation complies perfectly with physical principles, its heavy calculations make it practically impossible to use. To avoid this difficulty, we can benefit from a special case of the peridynamic equation of motion in which the integration domain of the internal forces is limited to the family of particles. A limitation of this special equation, which is the most common equation in the peridynamic literature, is...

Nonlocal Nanoscale Modeling of Shape Memory Alloys Behavior Using Finite Element Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Soveity, Salem (Author) ; Naghdabadi, Reza (Supervisor) ; Sohrabpour, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are smart materials with the ability to recover their original shape. Growing the industrial and laboratory applications of SMAs, the study of their mechanical behavior is extremely important. Recently, the shape memory alloys have been investigated by empirical and experimental methods. The results show that these materials also in nano scale keep up their particular properties to a critical size. Because of the size dependence of the material properties at the nano scale, the constitutive models based on classical continuum mechanics cannot describe phenomena observed in the nano scale. For a successful application of SMAs at nano scale, nonlocal theory can be...

    , Article Applied Mechanics and Materials, 29 July 2011 through 31 July 2011 ; Volume 110-116 , July , 2012 , Pages 1696-1700 ; 16609336 (ISSN) ; 9783037852620 (ISBN) Niaki, S. A ; Naghdabadi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Stress distribution in Carbon Nanotube (CNT) reinforced composites is studied using nonlocal theory of elasticity. Two nearby CNTs are modeled as two circular inclusions embedded in an infinite elastic medium, and classical stresses are obtained using the complex stress potential method. Nonlocal stresses are calculated using nonlocal integral elasticity equation. Effects of the distance between CNTs as well as effects of the nonlocal parameters on the stress distribution and stress concentration are studied. For unit normal stress at infinity, stress at the interface of the CNT and matrix increases from 0.1 for classical analysis to 0.85 for nonlocal analysis. Furthermore, when two CNTs...

    Abstract
In this paper, utilizing the non-local theory, the resonant frequency and sensitivity of an AFM microcantilever are investigated. To that end, the governing equation of motion and corresponding boundary conditions are obtained using the variational approach. Afterwards, the resonant frequency and sensitivity of the AFM microcantilever are derived analytically and depicted in some figures versus the contact stiffness of the sampling surface. The results of the current model are compared to those of the classical theory. The comparison shows that the difference between the results of the non-local theory and those of the classical theory is significant when the non-local parameter is high but...

    Abstract
The small-scale effect on the natural frequencies and buckling of pressurized nanotubes is investigated in this study. Based on the firstorder shear deformable shell theory, the nonlocal theory of elasticity is used to account for the small-scale effect and the governing equations of motion are obtained. Applying modal analysis technique and based on Galerkin's method a procedure is proposed to obtain natural frequencies of vibrations. For the case of nanotubes with simply supported boundary conditions, explicit expressions are obtained which establish the dependency of the natural frequencies and buckling loads of the nanotube on the small-scale parameter and natural frequencies obtained by...

    Abstract
One of the most important phenomena related to electrically actuated micro and nano electromechanical systems (MEMSNEMS) is dynamic pull-in instability which occurs when the electrical attraction and beam inertia forces are more than elastic restoring force of the beam. According to failure of classical mechanics constitutive equations in prediction of dynamic behavior of small size systems, nonlocal theory is implemented here to analyze the dynamic pull-in behavior. Equation of motion of an electrostatically actuated micro to nano scale doubly clamped beam is rewritten using differential form of nonlocal theory constitutive equation. To analyze the nonlocal effect equation of motion is...

Also the boundary conditions for solving the equation are revised and to analyze the size effect better governing equation is...
