    , Article Asian Journal of Civil Engineering ; Volume 12, Issue 6 , 2011 , Pages 731-750 ; 15630854 (ISSN) Alembagheri, M ; Estekanchi, H. E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Aboveground steel tanks are widely utilized in residential and industrial areas, and assurance of their seismic safety is a very important engineering consideration. In this paper, nonlinear response of these tanks using a new dynamic pushover procedure called Endurance Time (ET) method along with conventional nonlinear response history (RHA) is studied. The comparison between the results of RHA and ET method shows reasonable consistency. Based on the level of accuracy observed in this research, it is concluded that ET method can effectively be used in predicting seismic performance of anchored tanks. By considerably reducing the number of required response history analyses for estimating...

    Abstract
The performance of perturbation method in nonlinear analyses of plates subjected to mechanical, thermal, and thermo-mechanical loadings is investigated. To this end, cylindrical bending of FG plates with clamped and simply-supported edges is considered. The governing equations of Mindlin's first-order shear deformation theory with von Kármán's geometric nonlinearity are solved using one- and two-parameter perturbation methods and the results are compared with the results of an analytical solution. The material properties are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness of the plate according to a power-law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. It is shown that the...

    Abstract
In this study, nonlinear bending of functionally graded (FG) circular sector plates with simply supported radial edges subjected to transverse mechanical loading has been investigated. Based on the first-order shear deformation plate theory with von Karman strain-displacement relations, the nonlinear equilibrium equations of sector plates are obtained. Introducing a stress function and a potential function, the governing equations which are five non-linear coupled equations with total order of ten are reformulated into three uncoupled ones including one linear edge-zone equation and two nonlinear interior equations with total order of ten. The uncoupling makes it possible to present...

Conformal invariance of isoheight lines in a two-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang surface

    , Article Physical Review E - Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics ; Volume 77, Issue 5 , 2008 ; 15393755 (ISSN) Saberi, A. A ; Niry, M. D ; Fazeli, S. M ; Rahimi Tabar, M. R ; Rouhani, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
The statistics of isoheight lines in the (2+1) -dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) model is shown to be conformally invariant and equivalent to those of self-avoiding random walks. This leads to a rich variety of exact analytical results for the KPZ dynamics. We present direct evidence that the isoheight lines can be described by the family of conformally invariant curves called Schramm-Loewner evolution (or SLEI) with diffusivity Î=8/3. It is shown that the absence of the nonlinear term in the KPZ equation will change the diffusivity I from 8/3 to 4, indicating that the isoheight lines of the Edwards-Wilkinson surface are also conformally invariant and belong to the universality class of...

    Abstract
A local anisotropic damage mechanics model based on energy equivalence was used for evaluating the nonlinear static and dynamic response of concrete gravity dams. The cracks within the elements was formulated as coaxial rotating cracks and the effect of hydrodynamic pressure was included using the staggered displacement method. The features of strain rate effects; strain softening and closing/reopening of cracks were included in the model. The mesh objectivity of the nonlinear model was satisfied by the fracture energy conservation technique. The Pine Flat dam was chosen to investigate the performance of the proposed algorithms. It was found that the resulted crack profiles when including...

A new lateral load pattern for optimum design of concrete structures using the wave propagation theory

    , Article Structures ; Volume 40 , 2022 , Pages 581-595 ; 23520124 (ISSN) Khaaloo, A ; Omidi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
The current design procedure known as Force-Based Design (FBD) method, generally, does not lead to uniform distribution of drift, hysteretic energy, and ductility demands (or structural damage) along the height of the moment frames under strong earthquakes and these performance parameters can be much higher and concentrate damage on one or more of the lower structural stories. This paper presents an iterative wave propagation (WP) based technique to calculate the seismic nonlinear response of multistory buildings as an extension of the layered soil media, founded on bedrock and subjected to vertically propagating shear waves, which leads to the introduction of a new Lateral Load Pattern...

On the effect of large deflection on nonlinear behavior of an eccentric bracing system

    , Article Structural Design of Tall and Special Buildings ; Volume 17, Issue 4 , 2008 , Pages 795-808 ; 15417794 (ISSN) Rasekh, A ; Mofid, M ; Khezrzadeh, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
In this article, a particular off-center bracing system is introduced. In this system, the tensile diagonal strut is not straight. When the load is applied, the original geometry changes and thus causes the system to harden. Based on this behavior, a step-by-step analytical method is developed. Using this method, a Geometrically Nonlinear Analysis Program (GNAP) is designed to analyze the elastic force-displacement relation. Extension of this program to dynamic analysis led to a Dynamic Nonlinear Analysis Program (DNAP). The object of this article is to show that such bracing systems will lead to less seismic force on such structures compared to classic concentric bracing systems. On the...

    , Article Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering ; Volume 34, Issue 9 , 2007 , Pages 1119-1130 ; 03151468 (ISSN) Kazemi, M. T ; Erfani, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
The present paper introduces a mixed shear-flexural (VM) link element that is capable of modelling shear yielding, flexural yielding, and their interaction under monotonic and cyclic loadings. The inelastic deformations are modelled using the multisurfaces approach with dissimilar yield surfaces and a stiffness matrix with nonzero off-diagonal components in shear-flexural space. A new kinematic hardening and new non-associated flow rules are employed. A special girder, which has an open web in the middle, is introduced and modelled using the developed VM link element. It is shown that the results of analyses using the VM link element are in good agreement with those from a finite element...

Evaluation of Seismic Behavior of Anchored and Unanchored Tanks By Using Endurance Time Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Alembagheri, Mohammad (Author) ; Esmaeilpour Estekanchi, Homayun (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Endurance Time (ET) method is a relatively general analysis method based on time history analysis for evaluation of structure systems under dynamic excitations resulted from earthquakes. Assessment criterion in this method is based on time of endurance of structure versus applied acceleration function and don't use parameters such as stiffness, lateral strength, period of structure and other dynamic characteristics straightly. Upper time of endurance means better operation. In this method, if assumed damage index stays under allowable limit until determined time of endurance then the structure assumed acceptable. In this study, nonlinear analysis of anchored and unanchored (on rigid base)...

    Abstract
Purpose: This paper aims to study the lateral behavior of cold-formed steel walls with K-shaped bracing by finite element modeling. Design/methodology/approach: The braces which have the same section as those for studs and tracks are connected to the frame by screw connections. By pushover analysis, lateral performance of two frame categories, with different dimensions and bracing arrangements, is examined, and the force-displacement diagram and the ultimate strength of walls are extracted. Probable failure modes during lateral loading including distortional buckling of studs, buckling in braces and failure of connections are simulated in the numerical model, and some strengthening...

    Abstract
The high degree of intensity values in microring resonators needs a careful treatment of nonlinear phenomena. Nonlinear effects are analyzed in coupling problem of ring-ring directional couplers. It has been observed that the nonlinearity affects the coupling device dramatically, and can be used as controlling techniques in such as coupled resonator optical waveguides. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Characterization of complex behaviors of TCP/RED computer networks based on nonlinear time series analysis methods

    , Article Physica D: Nonlinear Phenomena ; Volume 233, Issue 2 , 2007 , Pages 138-150 ; 01672789 (ISSN) Bigdeli, N ; Haeri, M ; Choobkar, S ; Jannesari, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2007
    Abstract
Packet-level observations are representative of the high sensitivity of TCP/RED computer network behavior with respect to network/RED parameter variations. That is, while we do not have any control on network parameters, mis-choosing of the RED parameters results in complex non-periodic oscillations in the router queue length that may damage the Quality of Service requirements. Characterizing the nature of such behaviors, however, helps the network designers to modify the RED design method in order to achieve better overall performance. In this paper, we first investigate the effect of variations in different RED parameters on the network behavior and then seek for the origin of such complex...

Bearing capacity is studied considering the localized plastic elements and forming the sliding path by plastic elements...

Evaluation of the Friction Dampers Effect on Seismic Retrofit of Non-ductile Concrete Structures

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Najafi, Yousef (Author) ; Golafshani, Ali Akbar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Iran plateau is situated over the Alpide-Himalaya earthquake belt. Tectonic studies indicate that this plateau has a very high density of active and recent faults; as a result, Iran is at risk of damaging earthquakes. Experience of past severe earthquakes shows previous designed structures do not have enough strength instead of real earthquake forces, therefore vulnerability study of existing structures and give a technical and economical retrofitting plan of them is required. Conventional methods of seismic rehabilitation for example using concrete shear walls or steel braces are not suitable for some buildings. Nowadays, passive control systems have been successfully used for reducing the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abtahi, Pooya (Author) ; Rahimzadeh Rofooei, Fayaz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The detuning of the structures equipped with Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) caused by their nonlinear behavior under strong ground motions is a real concern in their practical application. This thesis presents a feasibility study on the effectiveness of TMDs in reducing the seismic response and the resulting structural damage of reinforced concrete structures under intense ground motion. A number of 2-D concrete moment resisting frames with different numbers of stories are considered. TMDs are used as a mean to protect these structural models against ground excitation. The mass of TMDs are varied from 1% to 5% of the first effective modal mass of the structural models. IDARC 2-D program is used...

Finite Element Modeling of Impact Problems with Friction and Large Deformations

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zeinali, Mostafa (Author) ; Khoei, Amir Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the most important problems that challenge the researchers in modeling physical phenomena is the Impact Problem. The complexity of impact problems is due to the fact that this problem consists of various sub-problems, each of which of high complexity and in order to have a clear understanding and correct modeling of the problem, one needs to address each and every one of these problems with great effort, severity and punctuality.Impact problems often involve one or more dynamic systems that can also be subjected to dynamic loading. This loading could be a result of external agents or dynamic interaction of the two bodies with each other. In cases where the problem involves interaction...

Evaluation of the Damage to Steel MRF Structures Under Near Field Earthquake Pulses Using a Performance-Based Design Approach

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mousavi, Fatemeh Sadat (Author) ; Rahimzadeh Rofooei, Fayaz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Research on the characteristics of the near field earthquakes has been very popular in recent years due to the considerable damages they have caused to the structures located within the vicinity of seismic sources. The incapability of response spectra for structural damage assessment has been revealed through recent investigations. The recorded data show that the near field earthquakes are often accompanied by a large energy pulse in the beginning of the records caused by the so-called directivity phenomenon. That has encouraged many researchers to study the possibility of using the velocity pulse of these records to evaluate the imposed seismic demands on structures. Thus, investigating the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Atri, Saman (Author) ; Mofid, Masood (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Steel bracing systems can be used effectively for seismic retrofitting of existing RC buildings as well as for seismic design of new building. Steel bracing system has been used to increase the lateral load resistance of steel structures. In recent years the concept of steel bracing has also been applied to the retrofitting of reinforced concrete frames, especially to improve seismic performance of non-ductile reinforced concrete buildings. The use of steel bracing systems for seismic rehabilitation of RC frames offers some advantages such as (a) minimal added weight to the structure; (b) ease and speed of construction;(c) increased architectural flexibility; in comparison with RC shear...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Rezaei, Mohammad Mahdi (Author) ; Behzad, Mehdi (Supervisor) ; Haddadpour, Hassan (Co-Advisor) ; Moradi, Hamed (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Aiming to improve the extraction performance of wind energy has led to the noticeable increase of the structural dimensions in the modern wind turbines. The larger blade with more flexibility experiences large structural deformation even under nominal operational loading, so the nonlinear modeling and analysis of these structures have become as important subject of the recent wind turbine researches. In this dissertation, the geometrical exact model of the rotating wind turbine blade under the effects of the tower tip's motion, and also the operational loading comprising the aerodynamic and gravitational loadings is presented. In this way, the geometrical exact beam formulation is developed...
