    Abstract
Recognition and correction of inhomogeneous displacement caused by patient's movement has been recently discussed as an interesting topic in medical image processing. Considering consistency in general structure of the image during distortion, histogram could be employed as a fast implementation method in feature domain. Accordingly, attribute vectors could be defined for each pixel based on spatial features to find corresponding points in two images. Consequently a point-based and non-rigid transformation approach will be designed. A B-spline image registration has been applied to match those pairs with a defined smoothness factor. This algorithm is a step-by-step registration process...

Image Registration Using a Total Variation Based Similarity Metric

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Aghajani, Khadijeh (Author) ; Manzouri Shelmani, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Image registration is one of the fundamental and essential tasks for medical imaging and remote sensing applications. One of the most common challenges in this area is the presence of complex spatially varying intensity distortion in the images. The widely used similarity metrics, such as MI (Mutual Information), CC (Correlation Coefficient), SSD (Sum of Square Difference), SAD (Sum of Absolute Difference) and CR (Correlation Ratio), are not robust against this kind of distortion; because stationarity assumption and the pixel-wise independence cannot be obeyed and captured by these metrics. In this research, we proposed a new intensity-based method for simultaneous image registration and...

Intra-Operative Registration of Non-Rigid Tissue for Image-Guided Surgery

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Amiri, Hakimeh (Author) ; Kasaei, Shohreh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Image Registration is a fundamental task in numerous applications in medical image processing and is defined as the process of determining the correspondence of between images collected at different times or using different imaging modalities. This correspondence can be used for aligning images so that the pair can be directly compared, combined or analyzed. Image-guided surgery systems use registration for establishing an accurate relation between preoperative and intraoperative image space. There have been several methods for rigid registration which are not easily applicable for soft tissues. Indeed, nonrigid deformation of soft tissues will endanger the accuracy of rigid methods, so it...

    Abstract
A novel algorithm for recovering the 3D shape of deformable objects purely from realistic monocular video is presented in this paper. Unlike traditional non-rigid structure from motion (NRSfM) methods, which have been studied only on synthetic datasets and controlled lab environments that needs some prior constraints (such as manually segmented objects, limited rotations and occlusions, or full-length trajectories), the proposed method has been described and tested on realistic video sequences, which have been downloaded from some social networks (such as Facebook and Twitter). In order to apply NRSfM to the realistic video sequences, because of no-prior information about the scene and...

Unlike traditional non-rigid structure-from-motion (NRSfM) methods, which have been studied only on synthetic datasets and controlled lab environments that require some prior constraints (such as manually segmented objects, limited rotations and occlusions, and full-length trajectories); the proposed method can be used in realistic video sequences. In addition, contrary to...

Dynamics, Stability, and Aero-servo-elasticity of Airships with Flexible Body and Fins

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mirhashemi, Sajad (Author) ; Haddadpour, Hassan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research, the dynamics, aero-elasticity, and control of an airship with a flexible body hull and fins are investigated. The flexible airship is modeled as a combination of several beams with specific boundary conditions. So that the dynamics and vibration of its body hull and fins can be taken into account regarding the aerodynamic, gravity, aerostatic, and control input forces. The governing equations of motion of the system are derived by using the velocity of an arbitrary point on each component and integration over the component and substituting them into the Euler-Lagrange equations in a body frame. Afterward, the added mass acting on the hull is calculated. Then, a perturbation...

Nonrigid registration of breast MR images using residual complexity similarity measure

    , Article Iranian Conference on Machine Vision and Image Processing, MVIP, Zanjan ; Sept , 2013 , Pages 241-244 ; 21666776 (ISSN); 9781467361842 (ISBN) Nekoo, A. H ; Ghaffari, A ; Fatemizadeh, E ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Elimination of motion artifact in breast MR images is a significant issue in pre-processing step before utilizing images for diagnostic applications. Breast MR Images are affected by slow varying intensity distortions as a result of contrast agent enhancement. Thus a nonrigid registration algorithm considering this effect is needed. Traditional similarity measures such as sum of squared differences and cross correlation, ignore the mentioned distortion. Therefore, efficient registration is not obtained. Residual complexity is a similarity measure that considers spatially varying intensity distortions by maximizing sparseness of the residual image. In this research, the results obtained by...

Automatic identification of overlapping/touching chromosomes in microscopic images using morphological operators

    , Article 2011 7th Iranian Conference on Machine Vision and Image Processing, MVIP 2011 - Proceedings, 16 November 2011 through 17 November 2011 ; November , 2011 , Page(s): 1 - 4 ; 9781457715358 (ISBN) Jahani, S ; Setarehdan, S. K ; Fatemizadeh, E ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Karyotyping, is the process of classification of human chromosomes within the microscopic images. This is a common task for diagnosing many genetic disorders and abnormalities. Automatic Karyotyping algorithms usually suffer the poor quality of the images due to the non rigid nature of the chromosomes which makes them to have unpredictable shapes and sizes in various images. One of the main problems that usually need operator's interaction is the identification and separation of the overlapping/touching chromosomes. This paper presents an effective algorithm for identification of any cluster of the overlapping/touching chromosomes together with the number of chromosomes in the cluster, which...

Optimal Design of Tolerances in the Non-rigid Assemblies under the Thermal Impact

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hemati Nik, Javad (Author) ; Khodaygan, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Tolerance allocation in the recent mechanical assembly is significant because it straightly affects product performance and cost. Loose tolerances may cause the quality defect while tight tolerances can increase the cost. Thermal effects and the temperature gradients are one of the factors that caused changes in the size and geometry of the components during the performance of mechanical assemblies. This thesis proposes a new approach for tolerance design considering the thermal effects, to achieve lower manufacturing cost and good product quality. Finite element analysis is used to determine the deformation of components in an assembly. The neural network is trained using experimental...

Investigation of Aero-Servo-Elasticity Behavior of Airship by Considering the Torsional Mode of the Fuselage

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Etminan, Mahdi (Author) ; Haddadpour, Hassan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research, with the help of a comprehensive dynamic model, the stability, control, dynamics and twisting of airships with flexible bodies and beams have been investigated. For the first time, the influence of the twisting mode of the body on the dynamic behavior and control of the airship has been investigated by considering the pressure drop inside the body. By obtaining the terms of kinetic energy and the potential of the body and beams, the governing equations of the bird have been extracted and with the help of mass integrals, the velocity of the body and beams has been obtained. The answer to this non-linear dynamic couple problem, due to the existence of two types of dynamic...

Medical image registration using sparse coding of image patches

    , Article Computers in Biology and Medicine ; Volume 73 , 2016 , Pages 56-70 ; 00104825 (ISSN) Afzali, M ; Ghaffari, A ; Fatemizadeh, E ; Soltanian Zadeh, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Image registration is a basic task in medical image processing applications like group analysis and atlas construction. Similarity measure is a critical ingredient of image registration. Intensity distortion of medical images is not considered in most previous similarity measures. Therefore, in the presence of bias field distortions, they do not generate an acceptable registration. In this paper, we propose a sparse based similarity measure for mono-modal images that considers non-stationary intensity and spatially-varying distortions. The main idea behind this measure is that the aligned image is constructed by an analysis dictionary trained using the image patches. For this purpose, we use...

Perspective reconstruction of non-rigid surfaces from single-view videos

    , Article 2017 25th Iranian Conference on Electrical Engineering, ICEE 2017, 2 May 2017 through 4 May 2017 ; 2017 , Pages 1452-1458 ; 9781509059638 (ISBN) Sepehrinour, M ; Kasaei, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A novel algorithm to reconstruct the three-dimensional (3D) structure of non-rigid shapes based on a single view video, considering the perspective projection camera model, is presented in this paper. Even though perspective projection is considered to be the most realistic model and is ideal for a wide range of cameras in machine vision applications, but because of its complex and often non-linear equations, mostly, is approximated by some simpler camera projection models such as orthographic projection, weak perspective projection and so forth. Orthographic reconstruction of non-rigid surfaces has been done by singular value decomposition algorithm and using the orthogonal characteristics...
