    Abstract
High chemical resistance is the main prerequisites for materials that are intended to be utilized in usages such as chemicals storage containers production. Nanocomposites of epoxy resin containing nanoclay, CaCO3 and TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared and their chemical resistance was studied. Moreover, the effect of electron beam irradiation was explored. TEM micrographs proved the dispersion of nano-size particles in the polymeric matrix. XRD patterns showed an exfoliated structure for nanocomposite containing 1 % nanoclay and intercalated structures for nanocomposites with higher nanoclay contents. SEM showed the pits that appeared in epoxy/nanoclay structure due to chemical corrosion....

A mathematical method for XRD pattern interpretation in clay containing nano composites

    , Article Applied Surface Science ; Volume 318 , 1 November , 2014 , Pages 90-94 ; ISSN: 01694332 Khederlou, K ; Bagheri, R ; Shojaei, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
X-ray diffraction and rheological measurements were used to characterize nanoparticle dispersion in LDPE/LLDPE/nanoclay hybrid nanocomposites. XRD patterns were interpreted with a novel distribution formula and rheological measurements were used to confirm the results. Results of these two methods indicated that increasing clay in all the prepared nanocomposites exhibited a significant improvement in filler-matrix interaction because of increasing the probability of polymer diffusion but further exfoliation need more compatibilizing situations. It seems that this mathematical method could be used for predicting the overall change in clay gallery d-spacing and the extent of...

    Abstract
Polypropylene matrix nanocomposites reinforced with organoclay are investigated and their ability to replace some polyamide automotive parts is evaluated. This is so interesting from industrial point of view because of cost saving and ease of processing and recycling. This work is focused on different nanocomposite systems which are PP/nanoclay, and PP/PA/nanoclay. Also the effect of compatibilizer is presented here. Structure of these systems are studied by using WAXD, TEM and SEM. Mechanical properties of specimens are studied using uniaxial tensile test. As it will be demonstrated, nanoclay sheets tend to disperse in PA particles. On the other hand, introducing nanoclay into PP/PA blends...

Characterization of PVDF/Nanoclay Nanocomposites Prepared by Melt, Solution, and Co-Precipitation Methods

    , Article International Journal of Polymer Analysis and Characterization ; Volume 17, Issue 4 , 2012 , Pages 291-301 ; 1023666X (ISSN) Rahmani, P ; Dadbin, S ; Frounchi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanocomposites were prepared via melt, solution, and co-precipitation mixing methods using Cloisite 30B as organoclay. The results from X-ray diffraction patterns display intercalation or exfoliation of nanoclay depending on the nanocomposite preparation method. The solvent cast and co-precipitated samples showed exfoliation, while intercalation was observed in the nanocomposites prepared by melt mixing. Introducing organoclay induced formation of β-crystals in the PVDF nanocomposites as evidenced by XRD and FT-IR. FT-IR analysis indicated that the samples prepared by the co-precipitation method had a higher tendency for β phase formation, while the sample...

    Abstract
Despite the promise of hydrogel-based stem cell therapies in orthopedics, a significant need still exists for the development of injectable microenvironments capable of utilizing the regenerative potential of donor cells. Indeed, the quest for biomaterials that can direct stem cells into bone without the need of external factors has been the "Holy Grail" in orthopedic stem cell therapy for decades. To address this challenge, we have utilized a combinatorial approach to screen over 63 nanoengineered hydrogels made from alginate, hyaluronic acid, and two-dimensional nanoclays. Out of these combinations, we have identified a biomaterial that can promote osteogenesis in the absence of...

    Abstract
Despite various applications of hydrogels, they have poor gel strength and low resistance against crack propagation which lead to the limitation of their applications. For overcoming this inherent weakness, the current study has focused on the simultaneous utilization of interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) structure and nanocomposite hydrogels. It is known that IPN and nanocomposite gels can improve gel strength. The combination of IPN and nanocomposite structure was developed in hydrogels for improving gel strength. For this purpose, bentonite was successfully modified with a cationic surfactant, (3-methacrylamidopropyl) trimethyl ammonium chloride (MAPTAC), as intercalate, and...

    Abstract
Recently, a renewed interest arises in the application of nanotechnology for the upstream petroleum industry. In particular, adding nanoparticles to fluids may drastically benefit enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and improve well drilling, by changing the properties of the fluid, rocks wettability alteration, advanced drag reduction, strengthening the sand consolidation, reducing the interfacial tension and increasing the mobility of the capillary trapped oil. In this study, we focus on roles of clay nano-particles on polymer viscosity. Polymer-flooding schemes for recovering residual oil have been in general less than satisfactory due to loss of chemical components by adsorption on reservoir...

    Abstract
Inclusion of nano-clays into hydrogels is an efficient approach to produce nanocomposite hydrogels. The introduction of nano-clay into hydrogels causes an increase in water absorbency. In the present work, Nanocomposite hydro-gels based on kappa-carrageenan were synthesized using sodium montmorillonite as nano-clay. Acrylamide and meth-ylenebisacrylamide were used as monomer and crosslinker, respectively. The structure of nanocomposite hydrogels was investigated by XRD and SEM techniques. Swelling behavior of nanocomposite hydrogels was studied by varying clay and carrageenan contents as well as methylenebisacrylamide concentration. An optimum swelling capacity was achieved at 12% of sodium...

The exfoliated structure was obtained for nanoclay contents up to 3 wt-%. Incorporation of nanoclay to the PU matrix prompted the thermal stability of the polymer. A nanocomposite filled with 3 wt-% nanoclay showed the best tensile strength in the prepared nanocomposites. Subsequently, the nanocomposite with the 3 wt-% nanoclay was reinforced with carbon and glass...

Anomalous fracture behavior in an epoxy-based hybrid composite

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 515, Issue 1-2 , 2009 , Pages 49-58 ; 09215093 (ISSN) Marouf, B. T ; Pearson, R. A ; Bagheri, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
In this investigation, core-shell rubber particles and organically modified clay were added to an epoxy resin and the changes in mechanical behavior were studied. As expected, the yield strength of the organoclay-filled epoxies increased modestly with increasing clay content and the yield strength of the rubber-modified compounds decreased with rubber content. Interestingly, the compressive yield strength of epoxy resins containing both rubber particles and organoclay (a.k.a. hybrid nanocomposites) was found to be independent on organoclay content (up to 5 phr). The fracture toughness of organoclay-filled epoxies increased modestly with clay content and, as expected, the increases in...

The fabricated membranes were used as affinity membranes for dye removal with ultrafast permeating adsorption. The results showed that incorporating Mt. as a reinforcing agent improved the nanocomposite ENM resistance to compaction. Young's modulus for the prepared membranes increased...
