Generating a Database Through Parametric Bi-Ventricular Modeling and Finite Element Analysis of End-Diastolic Mechanical Behavior of Human Heart

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Aghigh, Sahand (Author) ; Asghari, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Heart failure is one of the leading causes of death around the world and diastolic dysfunction is the main culprit behind about 30 percent of them. End-diastolic pressure-volume relationship is one of the most important indices of ventricles diastolic function, however invasive nature of assessment, has hindered its use in clinical applications. Despite the advances in computational modeling and bio-mechanical simulations, computational cost of these procedures often renders the computational methods unsuitable for clinical implications. Machine learning methods are usually the proper substitute in such cases. However, this method requires a large set of pre-calculated data for training,...

    Abstract
High rates of mortality and morbidity stemming from cardiovascular diseases unveil extreme limitations in current therapies despite enormous advances in medical and pharmaceutical sciences. Following myocardial infarction (MI), parts of myocardium undergo irreversible remodeling and is substituted by a scar tissue which eventually leads to heart failure (HF). To address this issue, cardiac patches have been utilized to initiate myocardial regeneration. In this study, a porous cardiac patch is fabricated using a mixture of decellularized myocardium extracellular matrix (ECM) and chitosan (CS). Results of rheological measurements, SEM, biodegradation test, and MTT assay showed that the...

A novel distributed model of the heart under normal and congestive heart failure conditions

, Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part H: Journal of Engineering in Medicine ; Volume 227, Issue 4 , 2013 , Pages 362-372 ; 09544119 (ISSN) Ravanshadi, S ; Jahed, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Conventional models of cardiovascular system frequently lack required detail and focus primarily on the overall relationship between pressure, flow and volume. This study proposes a localized and regional model of the cardiovascular system. It utilizes noninvasive blood flow and pressure seed data and temporal cardiac muscle regional activity to predict the operation of the heart under normal and congestive heart failure conditions. The analysis considers specific regions of the heart, namely, base, mid and apex of left ventricle. The proposed method of parameter estimation for hydraulic electric analogy model is recursive least squares algorithm. Based on simulation results and comparison...

Biohybrid oxidized alginate/myocardial extracellular matrix injectable hydrogels with improved electromechanical properties for cardiac tissue engineering

    Abstract
Injectable hydrogels which mimic the physicochemical and electromechanical properties of cardiac tissue is advantageous for cardiac tissue engineering. Here, a newly-developed in situ forming double-network hydrogel derived from biological macromolecules (oxidized alginate (OA) and myocardial extracellular matrix (ECM)) with improved mechanical properties and electrical conductivity was optimized. 3-(2-aminoethyl amino) propyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS)-functionalized reduced graphene oxide (Amine-rGO) was added to this system with varied concentrations to promote electromechanical properties of the hydrogel. Alginate was partially oxidized with an oxidation degree of 5% and the resulting OA...
