WCCP: A congestion control protocol for wireless multimedia communication in sensor networks

    , Article Ad Hoc Networks ; Volume 13, Issue , February , 2014 , Pages 516-534 ; ISSN: 15708705 Mahdizadeh Aghdam, S ; Khansari, M ; Rabiee, H. R ; Salehi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The growing interest in applications of Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs) imposes new challenges on congestion control protocols in such networks. In this paper, we propose a new content-aware cross layer WMSN Congestion Control Protocol (WCCP) by considering the characteristics of multimedia content. WCCP employs a Source Congestion Avoidance Protocol (SCAP) in the source nodes, and a Receiver Congestion Control Protocol (RCCP) in the intermediate nodes. SCAP uses Group of Picture (GOP) size prediction to detect congestion in the network, and avoids congestion by adjusting the sending rate of source nodes and distribution of the departing packets from the source nodes. In...

    Abstract
One of non-cooperative illuminators recently considered for passive radar applications is the DVB-T (Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial) station. The thumbtack ambiguity function of the DVB-T signal in addition to being stationary makes such signal a good candidate for such applications. However, certain ambiguities in its ambiguity function necessitates certain issues to be carefully considered when DVB-T signals are to be utilized. In this paper, after studying the origins of these ambiguities, we propose special processing schemes to resolve them

    Abstract
One of the attractive opportunistic signals for passive radar applications is the DVB-T (Digital Video Broadcasting- Terrestrial) signal. The thumbtack ambiguity function of the DVB-T signal in addition to being stationary makes such signal a good candidate for such applications. In this paper we want to consider its feasibility for this application in more details. So we first examin this signal for the main parts of the the passive radar: Resolving ambiguities before evaluating CAF and direct path intereference rejection, and then consider its processing gain in detecting targets

    Abstract
Real-time video transmission is considered as an important means for information distribution. One major application of it is E-learning, which requires real-time video processing and transmission. On the other hand, the process of cut detection is a fundamental component in automatic video browsing, indexing, searching, retrieval, and archiving. This paper introduces a new video cut detection technique that uses dominant lines and angles extracted from edge information of the video contents. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first works done for cut detection in E-learning application. This method is compatible with our application's requirements and has a low complexity and high...

High rate data hiding in speech signal

    , Article SIGMAP 2007 - 2nd International Conference on Signal Processing and Multimedia Applications, Barcelona, 28 July 2007 through 31 July 2007 ; 2007 , Pages 287-292 ; 9789898111135 (ISBN) Jahangiri, E ; Ghaemmaghami, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
One of the main issues with data hiding algorithms is capacity of data embedding. Most of data hiding methods suffer from low capacity that could make them inappropriate in certain hiding applications. This paper presents a high capacity data hiding method that uses encryption and the multi-band speech synthesis paradigm. In this method, an encrypted covert message is embedded in the unvoiced bands of the speech signal that leads to a high data hiding capacity of tens of kbps in a typical digital voice file transmission scheme. The proposed method yields a new standpoint in design of data hiding systems in the sense of three major, basically conflicting requirements in steganography, i.e....

    , Article 2007 2nd International Conference on Communication System Software and Middleware and Workshops, COMSWARE 2007, Bangalore, 7 January 2007 through 12 January 2007 ; 2007 ; 1424406145 (ISBN); 9781424406142 (ISBN) Firooz, M. H ; Ronasi, K ; Pakravan, M. R ; Nasiri Avanaki, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
Due to the constraints of P2P networks (such as bandwidth limitation) multiple senders should be employed for reliable multimedia streaming. This paper introduces a mathematic approach to select a set of senders among all available senders to provide the most reliable stream for the receiver. This selection is based on upload bandwidths and availability of peers as well as bandwidth of links connecting the senders and the receiver. Our method is called IPROMISE as it is an improved version of the PROMISE algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate improved media quality delivered to the receiver, while the complexity of sender selection remains the same. © 2007 IEEE

    Abstract
Format compliance, a desirable feature of multimedia security systems, means that the secured bitstream resembles the unprotected compressed bitstream. It is called full format compliance, if the scrambled stream can be decoded by a typical decoder. In this paper, we address the issues that are to be carefully taken into account to develop efficient fully format compliant scrambling methods for compressed video. We also propose new selective scrambling methods for securing compressed video streams. The security issues, in different parts of these scrambling methods, are analyzed and their impact on bit-rate and complexity is discussed. We show that our scrambling methods provide...

    Abstract
Using multiple illuminators of opportunity at the transmit side and multiple antennas at the receiver side in a passive coherent location (PCL) scheme is expected to improve the detection performance. However, in such multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) configuration choosing the position of the receivers is an obstacle that can have significant influence on the resulting performance. In this study, the authors consider the case of digital video broadcast (DVB)-T stations as non-cooperative transmitters and introduce a procedure based on the probability of missed detection to properly place receive antennas in a MIMO digital video broadcasting (DVB)-T based PCL configuration

Fast two-stage global motion estimation: A blocks and pixels sampling approach

    , Article Smart Innovation, Systems and Technologies ; Volume 11 SIST , 2011 , Pages 143-151 ; 21903018 (ISSN) ; 9783642221576 (ISBN) Ahmadi, A ; Pouladi, F ; Salehinejad, H ; Talebi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Global motion estimation (GME) is an important technique in image and video processing. Whereas the direct global motion estimation techniques boast reasonable precision they tend to suffer from high computational complexity. As with indirect methods, though presenting lower computational complexity they mostly exhibit lower accuracy than their direct counterparts. In this paper, the authors introduce a robust algorithm for GME with near identical accuracy and almost 50-times faster than MPEG-4 verification model (VM). This approach entails two stages in which, first, motion vector of sampled block is employed to obtain initial GME then Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm is applied to the...

Multiple human 3D pose estimation from multiview images

    , Article Multimedia Tools and Applications ; 2017 , Pages 1-29 ; 13807501 (ISSN) Ershadi Nasab, S ; Noury, E ; Kasaei, S ; Sanaei, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Multiple human 3D pose estimation is a challenging task. It is mainly because of large variations in the scale and pose of humans, fast motions, multiple persons in the scene, and arbitrary number of visible body parts due to occlusion or truncation. Some of these ambiguities can be resolved by using multiview images. This is due to the fact that more evidences of body parts would be available in multiple views. In this work, a novel method for multiple human 3D pose estimation using evidences in multiview images is proposed. The proposed method utilizes a fully connected pairwise conditional random field that contains two types of pairwise terms. The first pairwise term encodes the spatial...

Supervised spatio-temporal kernel descriptor for human action recognition from RGB-depth videos

    , Article Multimedia Tools and Applications ; 2017 , Pages 1-21 ; 13807501 (ISSN) Asadi Aghbolaghi, M ; Kasaei, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
One of the most challenging tasks in computer vision is human action recognition. The recent development of depth sensors has created new opportunities in this field of research. In this paper, a novel supervised spatio-temporal kernel descriptor (SSTKDes) is proposed from RGB-depth videos to establish a discriminative and compact feature representation of actions. To enhance the descriptive and discriminative ability of the descriptor, extracted primary kernel-based features are transformed into a new space by exploiting a supervised training strategy; i.e., large margin nearest neighbor (LMNN). The LMNN highly reduces the error of a nearest neighbor classifier by minimizing the intra-class...
