    Abstract
During power system restoration, it is necessary to check the phase angle between two buses before closing circuit breakers to connect a line between them. A novel approach for reducing large standing phase angle (SPA) based on Genetic Algorithm (GA) is presented in this paper. The proposed approach starts with a state estimation on Wide Area Monitoring System (WAMS) data measurements and considering power system operation and angular stability constraints, seeks an optimal control action scenario for reducing SPA. Since these constraints are evaluated based on WAMS data, the presented approach is considerably high speed and accurate. As an optimization problem, objective function of the...

Characterizing terahertz channels for monitoring human lungs with wireless nanosensor networks

    , Article Nano Communication Networks ; Volume 9 , 2016 , Pages 43-57 ; 18787789 (ISSN) Zarepour, E ; Hassan, M ; Chou, C. T ; Ebrahimi Warkiani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2016
    Abstract
We characterize terahertz wireless channels for extracting data from nanoscale sensors deployed within human lungs. We discover that the inhalation and exhalation of oxygen and carbon dioxide causes periodic variation of the absorption coefficient of the terahertz channel. Channel absorption drops to its minimum near the end of inhalation, providing a window of opportunity to extract data with minimum transmission power. We propose an algorithm for nanosensors to estimate the periodic channel by observing signal-to-noise ratio of the beacons transmitted from the data sink. Using real respiration data from multiple subjects, we demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can estimate the minimum...

An Investigation of Signal Processing Techniques for Monitoring of the Heart Abnormalities

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghotbi Ravandi, Amir (Author) ; Ghorshi, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis we have investigated and improved the signal processing techniques which are used for monitoring the heart abnormalities in terms of ECG (ElectroCardioGram) signals in order to detect heart attacks before they occur. De-noising ECG signals are one of the most important research topics in computer and electrical engineering fields. There are many different algorithms for de-noising signals in various domains. It usually is needed to propose a suitable algorithm for each specific system. In some cases instead of developing a new algorithm, we could modify the available ones for de-noising in our system. ECG signals are output from an electrocardiograph which measures electrical...

Codebook appearance representation for vehicle handover across disjoint-view multicameras

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 18, Issue 6 , 2011 , Pages 1450-1459 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Shabaninia, E ; Kasaei, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Object handover as continually tracking an object across disjoint-view cameras is a necessary part of video-based monitoring systems. While having nonoverlapping cameras is a requirement for monitoring a wide area, there is no common 3D location that can be used to detect multiple views of the same object, in contrast with overlapping cameras. Appearance features play an important role for object handover in such camera networks. This paper focuses on modeling appearance features of moving vehicles by a new major color representation called codebook representation. Toward this end, in each frame, the k-means algorithm is used to cluster major colors of an object. In the subsequent frames, a...

    Abstract
Electricity distribution companies always strive to operate the power network efficiently and reliably so that their network be able to satisfy the growing needs for electricity. To achieve these goals in a power network, a comprehensive asset management plan with a sound policy for inspection, periodic maintenance, replacement, and disposal of depreciated equipment is required. One of the high-risk sectors of the electricity grid is the insulation section of distribution and transmission lines. In recent years, composite insulators have been used more widely because of their desirable characteristics such as: hydrophobicity, lower price, and lower weight if compared with the another...

    Abstract
System security indices play a crucial role with regard to monitoring system statues. These indices are derived from system measurements which are prone to either intentional or unintentional noises. To alleviate the effect of intentional noises, it is required to protect measurements data from bad data injection. In this regard, this paper intends to propose an approach to determine priority order of protected bus measurements in order to negate the effects of bad data injection on security indices. With this in mind, two security severity indices, the over loading risk index and the under voltage risk index, are considered. Genetic algorithm serves to find the highest deteriorating effect...

    Abstract
Nowadays communication and monitoring systems play an important role in power systems security. However, these systems are exposed to bad data injection through attackers. This paper is aimed to propose a priority order list of attacked buses in order to be fully informed about the attacker decision. To do so, system security is evaluated through two well-known risk indices including under voltage risk index and overloading risk index. A genetic algorithm (GA) is employed to determine the most severe attack for each of the security indices. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed model are scrutinized through simulations on the IEEE 30-bus network. The paper reveals that knowing the...

    Abstract
The increasing trend in the number of smart connected devices has turned the routing procedure as one of the major challenges in IoT infrastructures. The Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks (RPL) was introduced to satisfy different IoT application requirements through Objective Functions (OF). Although there have been several studies on introducing new OFs in order to fulfill specific IoT characteristics, e.g., energy and delay efficiency, reliability, and stability, but still there is a lack of novel OFs which fulfill the IoT application requirements in terms of both, the performance and the power consumption simultaneously. In this paper, we have proposed PEDAL, an OF which...

    Abstract
The reliability of power electronic based converters has become increasingly important due to their wide-spread use in industry. An effective method to increase the availability of converters is to use condition monitoring systems for planning scheduled maintenances. This paper provides a method to monitor the condition of IGBTs in a back-to-back converter based on their on-state voltage measurement. Using the proposed system adds limited number of elements to the circuit but can be implemented independent from the converter. Considering the converter topology has made the proposed method applicable for condition monitoring of switches in different back-to-back converters. This advantage...

    Abstract
Real-time measurement of soil water pressure has been recognized as an essential part of investigating water ow in unsaturated soils. Tensiometry, amongst different measuring techniques, is a common method for direct evaluation of water pressure. However, the lower limit of measurable water pressure by a conventional tensiometer becomes even more limited by increasing its length in the vertical installation. This paper describes the development of a Vacuum-Refilled Tensiometer (VRT) for monitoring soil water pressure independent of installation depth. This is achieved by fixing the distance between pressure sensor and ceramic cup together with incorporating an ancillary vacuumre filling...

    Abstract
One of important subjects in power system restoration that already is not addressed is frequency control. Operators are often concerned with the size of load and generation, which can be safely increased. With the emphasis on higher utilization of power systems, monitoring of its dynamics is becoming increasingly important. This requires information with higher accuracy and update rates faster than those usually provided by traditional SCADA systems. In addition, it must be synchronized over a wider geographical area than that provided by traditional protection systems. Nowadays, the introduction of Phasor Measurement Units (PMU) and Wide Area Monitoring Systems (WAMS) as well as advances in...

    Abstract
Reliability evaluation is a key factor in serviceability and safety analysis of air vehicles. Structural health monitoring methods have grown to a degree of maturity in many industries. However, there is a challenging interest to tie in SHM with reliability assessment. In this respect, consideration of stochastic structural dynamics with SHM data and random loadings opens a new chapter in failure prevention. The current study focuses on the stochastic behavior of structures as a way to relate SHM data with reliability. In this respect, uncertain factors such as atmospheric turbulence, structural parameters, and sensor outputs are considered in the process of reliability assessment. Firstly,...
