    , Article Thermal Science ; Volume 21, Issue 6 , 2017 , Pages 2267-2286 ; 03549836 (ISSN) Taheri Shahraiyni, H ; Sodoudi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this study, the importance of air temperature from different aspects (e. g., human and plant health, ecological and environmental processes, urban planning, and modelling) is presented in detail, and the major factors affecting air temperature in urban areas are introduced. Given the importance of air temperature, and the necessity of developing high-resolution spatio-temporal air-temperature maps, this paper categorizes the existing approaches for air temperature estimation into three categories (interpolation, regression, and simulation approaches) and reviews them. This paper focuses on high-resolution air temperature mapping in urban areas, which is difficult due to strong...

    , Article 2008 2nd International Symposium on Intelligent Information Technology Application, IITA 2008, Shanghai, 21 December 2008 through 22 December 2008 ; Volume 2 , January , 2008 , Pages 593-597 ; 9780769534978 (ISBN) Sagha, H ; Bagheri Shouraki, S ; Hosein, K ; Mahdi, D ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
In this paper we proposed a new real-time learning method. The engine of this method is a fuzzy-modeling technique which is called ink drop spread (IDS). IDS method has good convergence and is very simple and away from complex formula. The proposed method uses a reinforcement learning approach by an actor-critic system similar to Generalized Approximate Reasoning based Intelligent Control (GARIC) structure to adapt the IDS by delayed reinforcement signals. Our system uses Temporal Difference (TD) learning to model the behavior of useful actions of a control system. It is shown that the system can adapt itself, commencing with random actions. © 2008 IEEE

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques ; Volume 60, Issue 8 , 2012 , Pages 2378-2384 ; 00189480 (ISSN) Javadzadeh, S. M. H ; Mardy, Z ; Mehrany, K ; Farzaneh, F ; Fardmanesh, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
The Telegrapher's equations for a general nonuniform transmission line (NUTL) is analytically solved when the nonuniformities are of sub-wavelength scale. The proposed solution is based on an approximation of the chronological ordering operator for the Telegrapher's equations in an arbitrary NUTL. The proposed approximation is quite accurate when the transmission line has sub-wavelength nonuniformities. The scale of transmission line nonuniformity is assessed by using the concept of minimum resolvable length of nonuniformity (MRLN), which is based on the physically intuitive idea that electromagnetic waves are not affected by spectrally mild nonuniformities. The MRLN is inferred by using the...

    , Article Proceedings of the International MultiConference of Engineers and Computer Scientists 2010, IMECS 2010, 17 March 2010 through 19 March 2010 ; 2010 , Pages 551-554 ; 9789881701282 (ISBN) Rastegari, Y ; Sayadiharikandeh, M ; Zibanezhad, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Information extraction and refinement systems rely on a set of extraction patterns in pattern based approaches in order to construct taxonomies and finding instances of concepts in a corpus. Pattern based methods have high precision and suffer from low recall. Pattern generalization and modeling techniques can increase matching power and decrease GAP between training and test data

    Abstract
The purpose of this article is to develop a new method to estimate annual energy output for a given wind turbine in any region which should be easy to use and has satisfactory accuracy. To do this, hourly wind speeds of 25 different stations in Netherlands, output power curve of S47 wind turbine and fuzzy modeling techniques and artificial neural networks were used and a model is developed to estimate annual energy output for S47 wind turbine in different regions. Since this model has three inputs (average wind speed, standard deviation of wind speed, and air density of that region), this model is easy to use. The accuracy of this method is compared with the accuracy of conventional methods...

Application of inverse finite element method in tube hydroforming modeling

    , Article Applied Mathematical Modelling ; Volume 37, Issue 8 , 2013 , Pages 5913-5926 ; 0307904X (ISSN) Einolghozati, M ; Shirin, M. B ; Assempour, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In tube hydroforming, the inverse finite element method (IFEM) has been used for estimating the initial length of tube, axial feeding and fluid pressure. The already developed IFEM algorithm used in this work is based on the total deformation theory of plasticity. Although the nature of tube hydroforming is three-dimensional deformation, in this paper a modeling technique has been used to perform the computations in two-dimensional space. Therefore, compared with conventional forward finite element methods, the present computations are quite fast with no trial and error process. In addition, the solution provides all the components of strain. Using the forming limit diagram (FLD), the...

Digital video stabilization using radon transform

    , Article 2012 International Conference on Digital Image Computing Techniques and Applications, DICTA 2012, 3 December 2012 through 5 December 2012 ; December , 2012 ; 9781467321815 (ISBN) Babagholami Mohamadabadi, B ; Bagheri Khaligh, A ; Hassanpour, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Digital video stabilization is a category of techniques used to reduce the impact of unintentional camera motion such as jitter, jiggle, and other unsteady motions. These unintentional shakings degrade visual quality of videos and reduce the performance of subsequent processes such as video compression. Digital video stabilization which is performed by post processing the acquired frames, suffers from inaccuracy of motion estimation which is mostly due to the local motions of internal moving objects included in videos, and long processing time which prohibits them from being used in real time applications. In this paper we propose a fast and accurate transform based motion estimation method...

    , Article 2011 2nd Power Electronics, Drive Systems and Technologies Conference, PEDSTC 2011, 16 February 2011 through 17 February 2011 ; February , 2011 , Pages 356-361 ; 9781612844213 (ISBN) Faraji, V ; Aghasi, M ; Khaburi, D. A ; Ghorbani, M. J ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
This paper presents a high performance Direct Torque Control (DTC) theme for the induction motor using Indirect Matrix Converter (IMC). To improve the dynamic behavior of motor, Active Learning Method (ALM) is implemented on the DTC. The ALM uses its own modeling technique called the ink drop spread (IDS) method. Functionally the IMC is very similar to the Direct Matrix Converter (DMC) but it has separate line and load bridges. In the inverter stage, the classical DTC method is employed. In the rectifier stage, in order to reduce losses caused by snubber circuit the rectifier four-step commutation method is employed. By suitably selecting switching pattern and using Active Learning Method...

System-level vulnerability estimation for data caches

    , Article 16th IEEE Pacific Rim International Symposium on Dependable Computing, PRDC 2010, Tokyo, 13 December 2010 through 15 December 2010 ; 2010 , Pages 157-164 ; 9780769542898 (ISBN) Haghdoost, A ; Asadi, H ; Baniasadi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Over the past few years, radiation-induced transient errors, also referred to as soft errors, have been a severe threat to the data integrity of high-end and mainstream processors. Recent studies show that cache memories are among the most vulnerable components to soft errors within high-performance processors. Accurate modeling of the Vulnerability Factor (VF) is an essential step towards developing cost-effective protection techniques for cache memory. Although Fault Injection (FI) techniques can provide relatively accurate VF estimations they are often very time consuming. To overcome the limitation, recent analytical models were proposed to compute the cache VF in a timely fashion. In...

Reduced order modeling of liquid sloshing in 3D tanks using boundary element method

    , Article Engineering Analysis with Boundary Elements ; Volume 33, Issue 6 , 2009 , Pages 750-761 ; 09557997 (ISSN) Dehghani Firouzabadi, R ; Haddadpour, H ; Ghasemi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
This paper presents the application of reduced order modeling technique for investigation of liquid sloshing in three-dimensional tanks. The governing equations of sloshing are written using a boundary element formulation for incompressible potential flow. Then, the governing equations are reduced to a more efficient form that is represented only in terms of the velocity potential on the liquid free surface. This particular form is employed for eigen-analysis of fluid motion and the sloshing frequencies and mode shapes are determined. Then, the sloshing frequencies and the corresponding right- and left-eigenvectors are used along the modal analysis technique to find a reduced order model...

    Abstract
The prevention of combustion instability is unquestionably the greatest technical challenge and can be a significant cost driver in new engine development programs. In order to meet challenge, a predictive stability code is required. The main objective of this work is to develop a mechanistic engineering code for analysis of high frequency combustion instability in LRE. The developed MEchanistic Combustion Stability COmputer Program (MECSCOP), evaluates combustion stability using the transfer function approach, whereby the ability of the chamber to dissipate acoustic oscillations is compared to the oscillatory combustion driving mechanisms. The driving mechanisms are classified by the source...

    Abstract
Deposition of asphaltenes upon precipitation is a main flow assurance concern, which propelled the development of various experimental and modeling techniques to accurately predict its occurrence. This work develops an integrated approach combining thermodynamic and deposition modules with a multiphase flow simulator to simultaneously model asphaltenes precipitation and deposition in wellbores. The Peng-Robinson equation of state and the modified Miller-Flory-Huggins theory are used to calculate the thermodynamic properties of the oil and asphaltenes precipitation, respectively. The deposition module is based on conservation laws for asphaltenes transport and is linked to the flow simulator...

    Abstract
Equations of State EOS are vastly being used to predict the phase behavior of reservoir fluids. The accuracy of EOS modeling technique over conventional correlation models would benefit an improved property prediction of these fluids. Once the crude oil or gas condensate fluid system has been probably characterized using limited laboratory tests, its PVT behavior under a variety of conditions can be easily studied. In this paper, the PVT behavior of gas condensate from a reservoir in South Pars retrograde gas field in Iran was modeled using the three-parameter Patel and Teja Equation of State. The multi-sample characterization method is used to arrive at one consistent model for retrograde...

    Abstract
Although static characterization of reservoirs is an inevitable part of any reservoir studies, the most robust models of the reservoirs can be obtained through integrating static and dynamic data. The following study which is done in a heterogeneous carbonate reservoir utilizes the capillary pressure and relative permeability data to verify the task of static rock typing and investigate the role of hydraulic units in capillary pressure and relative permeability modeling. For this purpose, at first, various rock typing techniques are applied to the field data to seek the best method which has the most consistency with capillary pressure curves. Using Desouky method which is based on hydraulic...
