    Electro-catalytic oxidation of methanol on a Ni-Cu alloy in alkaline medium

    Abstract
    The electro-catalytic oxidation of methanol on a Ni-Cu alloy (NCA) with atomic ratio of 60/40 having previously undergone 50 potential sweep cycles in the range 0-600 mV vs. (Ag/AgCl) in 1 m NaOH was studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry (CA) and impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The electro-oxidation was observed as large anodic peaks both in the anodic and early stages of the cathodic direction of potential sweep around 420 mV vs. (Ag/AgCl). The electro-catalytic surface was at least an order of magnitude superior to a pure nickel electrode for methanol oxidation.     Abstract
    Porous silicon samples were obtained from p+- and n-type silicon wafers. Gas sensing measurements showed that the electrical conductivity of porous Si on p+- and n-type wafers increases strongly and decreases weakly in the presence of methanol gas, respectively. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) indicates that the adsorption of methanol on the surface of n-porous silicon decreases the average density of states especially in the band gap. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy reveals that after methanol exposure partial surface oxidation occurs which produces electron traps as well as methanol adsorption on the porous surfaces.     Titanium nitride-carbon nanocomposites are synthesized by the reaction of TiCl4 and NaN3 in supercritical benzene medium that also serves as a carbon source. In order to improve the crystallinity of the as-prepared precursor (SI), it is further heat-treated at 1000 ˚C for 3-10 h using anhydrous ammonia and UHP nitrogen atmospheres at 1000 ˚C (SIII-SV). Moreover, to improve electrochemical behavior, the synthesized nanocomposite (SIV) is modified with Pt nanoparticles using a polyol process.     Abstract
    Electro-oxidation of alcohols (methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol and 2-propanol) on nickel dispersed into a thick layer of poly-o-aminophenol on graphite electrode (GE/POAP-SDS/Ni) was investigated. Ni-doping into the polymeric film was achieved chemically followed by enrichment of Ni(III) through cycling the potential. The electro-oxidation of alcohols on GE/POAP-SDS/Ni were found to be dominated by direct electro-oxidation with some contribution from Ni(II)/Ni(III) couple. Rate constants for the electro-oxidation of methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol and 2-propanol as derived by chronoamperometry were 1.65 × 105, 1.31 × 105, 2.53 × 104 and 1.40 × 104 cm3 mol-1 s-1, respectively.     Abstract
    Electro-oxidation of methanol on Ni in NaOH solutions with the alkali concentration in the range of 0.05-0.5 M and in the presence of 0.5 M Na 2SO4 supporting electrolyte is studied. All the mentioned species compete for adsorption on Ni and OH- is essential for the electro-oxidation process. The electro-oxidation seems to proceed through the electro-chemical reactions of adsorbed methanol and hydroxide species and the removal of the resulting intermediate by adsorbed hydroxyl groups.     Abstract
    The electro-oxidation of methanol on nickel and nickel-copper alloy modified glassy carbon electrodes (GC/Ni and GC/NiCu) in a 1 M NaOH solution at different concentrations of methanol was studied by the method of ac-impedance spectroscopy. Two semicircles in the first quadrant of a Nyquist diagram were observed for electro-oxidation of methanol on GC/Ni corresponding to charge transfer resistance and adsorption of intermediates. Electro-oxidation of methanol on GC/NiCu shows negative resistance in impedance plots as signified by semi-circles terminating in the second quadrant.     This study demonstrates the glucose-template assisted synthesis of hydrogen-treated Pt: TiO2/WO3 composites, and their round-the-clock photoactivity towards methanol (MeOH) degradation under light illumination and in dark. XRD indicated increasing rutile fraction in TiO2 as a function of template removal, WO3 crystallinity and H2 treatment process. The presence of oxygen vacancies in WO3 was confirmed by XPS. Lower recombination rate and higher surface area were observed in the optimized H2-Pt-G:TiO2/WO3 catalyst.     Nickel modified graphite electrodes (G/Ni) prepared by galvanostatic deposition were examined for their redox process and electrocatalytic activities towards the oxidation of methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol and 2-propanol in alkaline solutions. The methods of cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry (CA) and impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were employed. In CV studies, the electrochemical response, peak current varied in the order of MeOH > EtOH > 1-PrOH > 2-PrOH. Under the CA regime, a higher catalytic rate constant obtained for methanol oxidation was in agreement with CV measurements.
