    Abstract
Here, a newly modified chitosan tetrazole was synthesized and fully characterized for CRISPR technology since by increasing the ratio of nitrogen to other elements, the interaction between the genetic material and this nanomaterial was significantly enhanced. The nanomaterial was added to HEK-293 cells for pCRISPR delivery. The nanomaterials were optimized and showed an acceptable binding ability with DNA due to its increasing zeta potential in the synthesized chitosan tetrazole in comparison with chitosan, as well as considerable transfection efficiency, more than 25%, and, thus, can be considered as a promising and also new gold-standard for the delivery of pCRISPR. © 2020 Taylor & Francis...

Mechanistic study on the dynamic interfacial tension of crude oil + water systems: Experimental and modeling approaches

    , Article Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry ; Volume 35 , 2016 , Pages 408-416 ; 1226086X (ISSN) Lashkarbolooki, M ; Ayatollahi, S ; Riazi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This study investigates dynamic interfacial tension (DIFT) of acidic crude oil (ACO) and non acidic/basic crude oils (BCO) + deionized water (DW) as a function of pressure from 500 to 4000 psi, and temperature from 30 to 80 °C using an axisymmetric drop shape analysis (ADSA) technique. DIFTs are also modeled using dynamic adsorption model, mono-exponential decay model, and empirical equations. The results showed that if a reduction in the surface excess concentration due to increasing temperature overlooks the total entropy of the molecules in the system, an increase in IFT would be expected

Formation of a catalytically active intermediate for oxidation in H2O2/ionic liquid system: experimental and theoretical investigations

    , Article Research on Chemical Intermediates ; Volume 43, Issue 4 , 2017 , Pages 2615-2625 ; 09226168 (ISSN) Alinezhad, H ; Vafaeezadeh, M ; Mahmoodi Hashemi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Abstract: A metal-free method for activation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is introduced using piperidinium trifluoroacetate (PPHTFA) ionic liquid as catalyst. The catalyst has been used for selective oxidation of thioanisole to its corresponding sulfoxide at room temperature. It was found that the selectivities were reduced by increasing the reaction temperature. In this work, no organic solvents or metallic salts were used for activation of H2O2. Mechanistic studies suggested that the reaction proceeds via in situ formation of trifluoro hydroperoxy species as an active catalytic intermediate. Formation of the catalytic intermediate was screened by NMR, IR and Mass Spectroscopy analysis....

Wettability alteration of oil-wet carbonate porous media using silica nanoparticles: Electrokinetic characterization

    , Article Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research ; Volume 58, Issue 40 , 2019 , Pages 18601-18612 ; 08885885 (ISSN) Dehghan Monfared, A ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    American Chemical Society  2019
    Abstract
Application of nanoparticles for wettability alteration offers a practical approach to resolve some surface-related problems encountered in the nowadays technological process. Examples are underground/subsurface engineering implications, including the enhanced oil recovery from the oil-wet carbonate reservoirs. However, the common wettability evaluating techniques such as contact angle and flotation cannot be representative of the dynamic phenomena occurring at the pore scale and hence are unable to give accurate information about the process. Therefore, in the present work, the electrokinetic evaluations are utilized to explore the wettability alteration of initially oil-wet carbonate rock...

Mechanistic study to investigate the effects of different gas injection scenarios on the rate of asphaltene deposition: An experimental approach

    , Article Fuel ; Volume 262 , 2020 Dashti, H ; Zanganeh, P ; Kord, S ; Ayatollahi, S ; Amiri, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Asphaltene deposition during enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes is one of the most problematic challenges in the petroleum industry, potentially resulting in flow blockage. Our understanding of the deposition mechanism with emphasis on the rate of the asphaltene deposition is still in its infancy and must be developed through a range of experiments and modelling studies. This study aims to investigate the rate of asphaltene deposition through a visual study under different gas injection scenarios. To visualise the asphaltene deposition, a high-pressure setup was designed and constructed, which enables us to record high-quality images of the deposition process over time. Present research...

Potential application of silica nanoparticles for wettability alteration of oil-wet calcite: A mechanistic study

    , Article Energy and Fuels ; Volume 30, Issue 5 , 2016 , Pages 3947-3961 ; 08870624 (ISSN) Dehghan Monfared, A ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Jamialahmadi, M ; Helalizadeh, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Oil recovery from carbonate reservoirs can be enhanced by altering the wettability from oil-wet toward water-wet state. Recently, silica nanoparticle (SNP) suspensions are considered as an attractive wettability alteration agent in enhanced oil recovery applications. However, their performance along with the underlying mechanism for wettability alteration in carbonate rocks is not well discussed. In this work, the ability of SNP suspensions, in the presence/absence of salt, to alter the wettability of oil-wet calcite substrates to a water-wet condition was investigated. In the first step, to ensure that the properties of nanofluids have not been changed during the tests, stability analysis...

A mechanistic study of emulsion flooding for mobility control in the presence of fatty acids: Effect of chain length

    , Article Fuel ; Volume 276 , 2020 Alizadeh, S ; Suleymani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Emulsion flooding is a promising method for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The static and dynamic behavior of the emulsions is greatly influenced by the nature of the applied surfactant. In this work, the effect of fatty acids, as natural surface-active agents, and their chain length on the emulsion behavior was investigated in both bulk and porous media. A panel of the fatty acids with different chain lengths (6 < C < 18) was applied at constant concentration and pH. Upon the static stability tests, emulsion stability at the optimum value of chain length (C14) was increased by two orders of magnitude. Under the optimal condition, the hydrogen bonding between dissociated and undissociated...

Mechanistic study of wettability alteration of oil-wet calcite: The effect of magnesium ions in the presence and absence of cationic surfactant

    , Article Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects ; Volume 482 , October , 2015 , Pages 403-415 ; 09277757 (ISSN) Karimi, M ; Al Maamari, R. S ; Ayatollahi, S ; Mehranbod, N ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Over 60% of the world's discovered oil reserves are held in carbonate reservoirs, which are mostly naturally fractured. Conventional water flooding results in low oil recovery efficiency in these reservoirs as most of them are oil-wet. On account of negative capillary forces, injected brine cannot penetrate simply into an oil-wet matrix of fractured formations to force the oil out. Wettability alteration of the rock surface to preferentially more water-wet state has been extensively studied using both smart water and surfactants separately. This study aims to study the effects of Mg2+ as one of the most important wettability influencing ions on the wetting properties of oil-wet carbonate...
