How particle shape affects the flow through granular materials

    , Article Physical Review E - Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics ; Volume 85, Issue 3 , 2012 ; 15393755 (ISSN) Nemati Hayati, A ; Ahmadi, M. M ; Mohammadi, S

    Abstract
Flow through the pores of granular materials has many instances in practice. Therefore, it is interesting to realize how some parameters, such as the shape of the particles affect the passing flow. Following the recent mathematical theory proposed by the authors, this paper deals with the issue of how tortuosity and permeability are influenced by the particle shape. Comparison of the results with the experimental data reveals the competency of the theory in predicting the impact of particle geometry

On the solvability of ∂̄ in a class of hypo-analytic manifolds

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 15, Issue 6 , 2008 , Pages 568-573 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Bahraini, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The solvability of ∂̄ operator in a class of hypo-analytic manifolds in complex dimension 2 is studied. Suitable weighted L2 spaces are introduced for establishing an a priori inequality. The regularity of the solutions is shown by using a theory of degenerate elliptic operators, developed by Grusin and Visik. The theorem obtained is a degenerate version for the ∂̄ problem in strictly pseudo-convex domains. © Sharif University of Technology

Application of Karnaugh map for easy generation of error correcting codes

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 19, Issue 3 , June , 2012 , Pages 690-695 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Tabandeh, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
With increasing use of data transmission between digital systems as well as subsystems, the need for more reliable communication is felt. In this research, a new approach to the linear error correcting codes is introduced. Among advantages of this technique are simpler code construction and also decoding algorithm, as well as easier understanding of the basic concept. Based on an earlier paper and also recent work done, we first discuss briefly the use of Karnaugh map and its advantages in constructing simple codes. We then prove a theorem on application of the map to multiple error correcting codes. Using these results, we propose a simple technique that leads to obtaining a code with more...

    Uncertainty-Aware Computational Trust

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Dorri Nogoorani, Sadegh (Author) ; Jalili, Rasool (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Trust is a common concept in interpersonal relationships. It is a replacement for strict control mechanisms, helping individuals to have a better estimation of the risks involved in an interaction or relationship. Computational notions of trust have a close relationship with security in computer systems.Different models of trust have been proposed to regulate interactions in: security, collaborative systems, and routing. We focused on two important problems and challenges in this dissertation: proper handling of uncertainty, and uncertainty-aware trust-based decision-making.We propose an integrated approach to modeling, processing, and treating uncertainty, as well as to uncertainty-aware...

Dynamic model of a mobile robot with long spatially flexible links

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 16, Issue 5 B , 2009 , Pages 387-412 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Zohoor, H ; Khorsandijou, S. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Using some agent variables, the general structure of the dynamic model of a spatial mobile robot with N long spatially flexible links and N revolute joints has been exposed. It is composed of a set of 5N + 6 nonlinear coupled partial differential motion equations under the influence of the boundary conditions. Non-conservative forces/moments have been neglected. While being considered, the general structure of the dynamic model will not change, but a few exciting/damping terms will arise within the agent variables. The base of the robot is an unconstrained rigid body in space and the links as 3D Euler-Bernoulli beams undergo tension-compression, torsion and two spatial bendings while elastic...

Analytical approach to dynamic and vibration analysis of a spherical ball under contact stress

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 18, Issue 6 , 2011 , Pages 1306-1312 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Aram, A ; Hosseinzadeh, A ; Foumani, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper presents a nonlinear model to illustrate the effect of contact stress in the vibration behavior of mechanical components, especially rotating systems. The problem is considered in the case of the vertical vibration of a sphere on a plate. The Hertzian contact theory is used to obtain the relationship between contact force and the deflection of the mass center of the sphere. Modeling the system by a mass and a nonlinear spring, the vibration equation of the mass center of the sphere is derived. The method of LindstedtPoincar is implemented to solve the equation of motion, and obtain vibration characteristics under a compressive preload. The dependency of frequency on several...
