Periodic solution of a certain non-linear third order differential equation

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 11, Issue 3 , 2004 , Pages 181-184 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Mehri, B ; Shadman, D ; Sharif University of Technology
    Sharif University of Technology  2004
    Abstract
In this paper, the third order differential equation x‴ + ψ (x′)x″ + (κ2 +ø (x))x′ + f(t, x = e(t) is considered. Under certain conditions on the functions appearing in the differential equation, the existence of periodic solutions is proved. Similar problems have been treated by authors in [4,6,7]. However, the method employed here is used by Reissig [1] and the results obtained are, in fact, a generalization of those in [1-3]. The conditions imposed on the nonlinear terms do not require the ultimate boundedness of all solutions. © Sharif University of Technology

A note on the resonant interaction between a surface wave and two interfacial waves

    , Article Journal of Fluid Mechanics ; Volume 491 , 2003 , Pages 1-9 ; 00221120 (ISSN) Jamali, M ; Lawrence, G. A ; Seymour, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Cambridge University Press  2003
    Abstract
Hill & Foda (1998) and Jamali (1998) have presented theoretical and experimental studies of the resonant interaction between a surface wave and two oblique interfacial waves. Despite many similarities between the findings there is one seemingly major difference. Hill & Foda's (1998) analysis indicated that there are only narrow bands of frequency, density ratio and direction angle within which growth is possible. On the other hand, Jamali (1998) predicted and observed wave growth over wide ranges of frequency and direction angle, and for all the density ratios that he investigated. We show that Hill & Foda's (1998) second-order representation of the dynamic interfacial boundary condition is...

Topographic effects on establishment of selective withdrawal

    , Article Physics of Fluids ; Volume 15, Issue 12 , 2003 , Pages 3665-3670 ; 10706631 (ISSN) Jamali, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This study is concerned with evolution of selective withdrawal of a linearly stratified fluid through a line sink at the base of a reservoir with bottom topography in the form of a sill of small height. The problem is investigated theoretically in the linear, inviscid limit using a perturbation technique. The induced flow due to motion of the first few shear waves is studied. It is shown that the effect of a sill on the flow field is confined mostly to the withdrawal layer in the vicinity of the sill. Equations are proposed for the steady withdrawal layer thickness and the critical Froude number in the presence of a sill. © 2003 American Institute of Physics

    Abstract
The creation of massless scalar particles from the quantum vacuum by spherical shell with time varying radius is studied. In the general case of motion the equations are derived for the instantaneous basis expansion coefficients. The examples are considered when the mean number of particles can be explicitly evaluated in the adiabatic approximation

A novel hybrid HMM/ANN structure for discriminative training in speech recognition

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 7, Issue 3-4 , 2000 , Pages 186-196 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Gholampour, I ; Nayebi, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Sharif University of Technology  2000
    Abstract
In this paper, a new formulation for discriminative training of HMMs is introduced as a solution to several speech recognition problems. This formulation uses a properly trained MLP in a simple interconnection with HMMs called "Cascade HMM/ANN Hybrid". The training algorithm has simple realization in comparison with other discriminative training for HMMs such as MDI and MMI. Also a rigid mathematical proof of its convergence has been presented. No significant increase in computational requirements is needed in recognition phase and the recognition task can still be performed in real-time. This structure has been employed in some isolated and continuous speaker-independent speech recognition...

A heuristic ranking approach on capacity benefit margin determination using pareto-based evolutionary programming technique

    , Article Scientific World Journal ; Volume 2015 , 2015 ; 23566140 (ISSN) Murtadha Othman, M ; Abd Rahman, N ; Musirin, I ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Rajabi Ghahnavieh, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper introduces a novel multiobjective approach for capacity benefit margin (CBM) assessment taking into account tie-line reliability of interconnected systems. CBM is the imperative information utilized as a reference by the load-serving entities (LSE) to estimate a certain margin of transfer capability so that a reliable access to generation through interconnected system could be attained. A new Pareto-based evolutionary programming (EP) technique is used to perform a simultaneous determination of CBM for all areas of the interconnected system. The selection of CBM at the Pareto optimal front is proposed to be performed by referring to a heuristic ranking index that takes into...

BRST quantization of noncommutative gauge theories

    , Article Physical Review D - Particles, Fields, Gravitation and Cosmology ; Volume 67, Issue 10 , 2003 ; 15507998 (ISSN) Soroush, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2003
    Abstract
In this paper, the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) symmetry transformation is presented for the noncommutative [Formula Presented] gauge theory. The nilpotency of the charge associated with this symmetry is then proved. As a consequence of the spacelike noncommutativity parameter, the Hilbert space of physical states is determined by the cohomology space of the BRST operator as in the commutative case. Further, the unitarity of the S-matrix elements projected onto the subspace of the physical states is deduced. © 2003 The American Physical Society

Incompressible stokes flow calculation using a finite point method

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 10, Issue 1 , 2003 , Pages 44-55 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Kazemzadeh, S. H ; Parsinejad, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Sharif University of Technology  2003
    Abstract
In this paper, a finite point method is employed to solve the incompressible laminar Stokes flow. A moving least-squares approximation, using linear and quadratic basis functions, in conjunction with a point collocation method, has been utilized to discretize the governing equations. Two examples, including the driven cavity and the fully developed channel flow, are solved showing the accuracy and applicability of the method. In summary, the solutions for the linear basis case exhibit a large sensitivity to the size of the domain of influence of the weighting function, in contrast to the quadratic basis case

Conformal invariance and quantum aspects of matter

    , Article International Journal of Modern Physics A ; Volume 15, Issue 7 , 2000 , Pages 983-988 ; 0217751X (ISSN) Motavali, H ; Salehi, I. I ; Golshani, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The vacuum sector of the Brans-Dicke theory is studied from the viewpoint of a non-conformally invariant gravitational model. We show that, this theory can be conformally symmetrized using an appropriate conformal transformation. The resulting theory allows a particle interpretation, and suggests that the quantum aspects of matter may be geometrized

In this paper it is shown that the entropy of the black hole horizon in Achúcarro-Ortiz spacetime, which is the most general two-dimensional black hole derived from the three-dimensional rotating Banados-Teitelboim- Zanelli black hole, can be described by the Cardy-Verlinde formula. The latter is supposed to be an entropy formula of conformai field theory in any dimension. © 2003 The American Physical Society

Experimental and numerical analysis of Brazilian discs with multiple parallel cracks

    , Article Arabian Journal of Geosciences ; Volume 8, Issue 8 , 2015 , Pages 5897-5908 ; 18667511 (ISSN) Haeri, H ; Khaloo, A ; Marji, M. F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The pre-cracked Brazilian disc specimens of rock-like materials (Portland Pozzolana cement (PPC), fine sands, and water) are especially prepared in a rock mechanics laboratory to study the breaking process of brittle solids. The Brazilian discs may contain one, two, three, four, and five (parallel) center slant cracks (45° to the horizontal) under compressive line loading. The breaking load of the pre-cracked disc specimens is measured showing that as the number of cracks increases, the final breakage load of the specimen decreases. The experiments are carried out under compression (just like the Brazilian tests used for measuring the indirect tensile strength of intact rocks). It has been...

CytoGTA: a cytoscape plugin for identifying discriminative subnetwork markers using a game theoretic approach

    , Article PLoS ONE ; Volume 12, Issue 10 , 2017 ; 19326203 (ISSN) Farahmand, S ; Foroughmand Araabi, M. H ; Goliaei, S ; Razaghi Moghadam, Z ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In recent years, analyzing genome-wide expression profiles to find genetic markers has received much attention as a challenging field of research aiming at unveiling biological mechanisms behind complex disorders. The identification of reliable and reproducible markers has lately been achieved by integrating genome-scale functional relationships and transcriptome datasets, and a number of algorithms have been developed to support this strategy. In this paper, we present a promising and easily applicable tool to accomplish this goal, namely CytoGTA, which is a Cytoscape plug-in that relies on an optimistic game theoretic approach (GTA) for identifying subnetwork markers. Given transcriptomic...

RCD snubber design based on reliability consideration: A case study for thermal balancing in power electronic converters

    , Article Microelectronics Reliability ; Volume 88-90 , 2018 , Pages 1311-1315 ; 00262714 (ISSN) Parvari, R ; Zarghani, M ; Kaboli, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In a turn-off RCD snubber, the capacitor value is usually optimized in order to minimize the power dissipated in the switch and snubber circuit. However, it may not be the best value of the snubber capacitor from the reliability point of view. In this paper, the capacitor value is optimized based on reliability considerations. Proposed method presents a new design to achieve the maximum reliability for the set of switch and its snubber. Mathematical analysis of the proposed method is conducted in MATLAB environment. Also, the experimental results are presented for validity of the theoretical analysis. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

A new category of relations: combinationally constrained relations

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 16, Issue 1 D , 2009 , Pages 34-52 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Rohani Rankoohi, M. T ; Mirian Hosseinabadi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
The normalization theory in relational database design is a classical subject investigated in different papers. The results of these research works are the stronger normal forms such as 5NF, DKNF and 6NF. In these normal forms, there are less anomalies and redundancies, but it does not mean that these stronger normal forms are free of anomalies and redundancies. Each normal form discussion is based on a particular constraint. In this paper, we introduce relations which contain a new kind of constraint called "combinational constraint". We. distinguish two important kinds of this constraints, namely Strong and Weak. Also we classify the. Combinationally Constrained Relations as Single and...

Endothelial cells morphology in response to combined wss and biaxial cs: introduction of effective strain ratio

    , Article Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering ; Volume 13, Issue 6 , 2020 , Pages 647-657 Pakravan, H. A ; Saidi, M. S ; Firoozabadi, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer  2020
    Abstract
Introduction: Endothelial cells (ECs) morphology strongly depends on the imposed mechanical stimuli. These mechanical stimuli include wall shear stress (WSS) and biaxial cyclic stretches (CS). Under combined loading, the effect of CS is not as simple as pure CS. The present study investigates the morphological response of ECs to the realistic mechanical stimuli. Methods: The cell population is theoretically studied using our previous validated model. The mechanical stimuli on ECs are described using four parameters; WSS magnitude (0 to 2.0 Pa), WSS angle (− 50° to 50°), and biaxial CS in two perpendicular directions (0 to 10%). The morphology of ECs is reported using four parameters; average...

Estimating the mixing matrix in Sparse Component Analysis (SCA) based on partial k-dimensional subspace clustering

    , Article Neurocomputing ; Volume 71, Issue 10-12 , 2008 , Pages 2330-2343 ; 09252312 (ISSN) Movahedi Naini, F ; Hosein Mohimani, G ; Babaie Zadeh, M ; Jutten, C ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
One of the major problems in underdetermined Sparse Component Analysis (SCA) in the field of (semi) Blind Source Separation (BSS) is the appropriate estimation of the mixing matrix, A, in the linear model X = AS, especially where more than one source is active at each instant of time. Most existing algorithms require the restriction that at each instant (i.e. in each column of the source matrix S), there is at most one single dominant component. Moreover, these algorithms require that the number of sources must be determined in advance. In this paper, we proposed a new algorithm for estimating the matrix A, which does not require the restriction of single dominant source at each instant....

Thermoelastic analysis of a functionally graded rotating disk

    , Article Composite Structures ; Volume 79, Issue 4 , 2007 , Pages 508-516 ; 02638223 (ISSN) Hosseini Kordkheili, A ; Naghdabadi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
A semi-analytical thermoelasticity solution for hollow and solid rotating axisymmetric disks made of functionally graded materials is presented. The radial domain is divided into some virtual sub-domains in which the power-law distribution is used for the thermomechanical properties of the constituent components. Imposing the necessary continuity conditions between adjacent sub-domains, together with the global boundary conditions, a set of linear algebraic equations are obtained. Solution of the linear algebraic equations yields the thermoelastic responses for each sub-domain as exponential functions of the radial coordinate. Some results for the stress, strain and displacement components...

High-throughput, label-free isolation of white blood cells from whole blood using parallel spiral microchannels with u-shaped cross-section

    Abstract
Rapid isolation of white blood cells (WBCs) from whole blood is an essential part of any WBC examination platform. However, most conventional cell separation techniques are labor-intensive and low throughput, require large volumes of samples, need extensive cell manipulation, and have low purity. To address these challenges, we report the design and fabrication of a passive, label-free microfluidic device with a unique U-shaped cross-section to separate WBCs from whole blood using hydrodynamic forces that exist in a microchannel with curvilinear geometry. It is shown that the spiral microchannel with a U-shaped cross-section concentrates larger blood cells (e.g., WBCs) in the inner...
