    Abstract
Consider two piezoelectric ellipsoidal inhomogeneities of arbitrary size, orientation and material constants, which in turn are surrounded by an infinite isotropic medium. The system under consideration is subjected to far-field non-uniform electromechanical loadings. Based on the extension of the electromechanical equivalent inclusion method (EMEIM), the present paper develops a unified solution for determination of the associated electroelastic fields in the vicinity of interacting inhomogeneities. Accordingly, each of the piezoelectric inhomogeneities is broken down into two equivalent inclusions with proper polynomial eigenstrains and eigenelectric fields. The robustness and efficacy of...

Visco-hyperelastic constitutive law for modeling of foam's behavior

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 32, Issue 5 , 2011 , Pages 2940-2948 ; 02641275 (ISSN) Anani, Y ; Alizadeh, Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
This paper proposes a new visco-hyperelastic constitutive law for modeling the finite-deformation strain rate-dependent behavior of foams as compressible elastomers. The proposed model is based on a phenomenological Zener model, which consists of a hyperelastic equilibrium spring and a Maxwell element parallel to it. The hyperelastic equilibrium spring describes the steady state response. The Maxwell element, which captures the rate-dependency behavior, consists of a nonlinear viscous damper connected in series to a hyperelastic intermediate spring. The nonlinear damper controls the rate-dependency of the Maxwell element. Some strain energy potential functions are proposed for the two...

Flexural vibration characteristics of micro-rotors based on the strain gradient theory

    , Article International Journal of Applied Mechanics ; Volume 7, Issue 5 , October , 2015 ; 17588251 (ISSN) Asghari, M ; Hashemi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte Ltd  2015
    Abstract
In this paper, the coupled three-dimensional flexural vibration of micro-rotors is investigated by taking into account the small-scale effects utilizing the strain gradient theory, which is a powerful nonclassical continuum theory in capturing small-scale effects. A micro-rotor consists mainly of a flexible micro-rotating shaft and a disk. With the aid of Hamilton's principle, governing equations of motion are derived and then transformed to the complex form. By implementing the Galerkin's method, a coupled ordinary differential equation is attained for the system. Expressions for the first two natural frequencies of the spinning micro-rotors are obtained with truncated two-term equation....

A formulation for the characteristic lengths of fcc materials in first strain gradient elasticity via the Sutton-Chen potential

    , Article Philosophical Magazine ; Volume 90, Issue 14 , 2010 , Pages 1893-1913 ; 14786435 (ISSN) Shodja, H. M ; Tehranchi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The usual continuum theories are inadequate in predicting the mechanical behavior of solids in the presence of small defects and stress concentrators; it is well known that such continuum methods are unable to detect the change of the size of the inhomogeneities and defects. For these reasons various augmented continuum theories and strain gradient theories have been proposed in the literature. The major difficulty in implication of these theories lies in the lack of information about the additional material constants which appear in such theories. For fcc metals, for the calculation of the associated characteristic lengths which arise in first strain gradient theory, an atomistic approach...

Physically based material model for evolution of stress-strain behavior of heat treatable aluminum alloys during solution heat treatment

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 31, Issue 1 , 2010 , Pages 433-437 ; 02641275 (ISSN) Anjabin, N ; Karimi Taheri, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
A mathematical model based on Kocks-Mecking-Bergstrom model, has been proposed to predict the flow behavior of age hardenable aluminum alloys, under different conditions of solution heat treatment and hot deformation. Considering the published literature, most researchers have taken into account the precipitation and solution strengthening contribution to the flow stress by a constant and some others have ignored these effects. So these available descriptions cannot be applicable directly to different conditions of solution heat treatment. In order to enable these constitutive descriptions to take into account the effects of soaking time and temperature, we introduce in this research a...

Elliptic inhomogeneities and inclusions in anti-plane couple stress elasticity with application to nano-composites

    , Article International Journal of Solids and Structures ; Volume 46, Issue 16 , 2009 , Pages 2978-2987 ; 00207683 (ISSN) Haftbaradaran, H ; Mohammadi Shodja, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
It is well-known that classical continuum theory has certain deficiencies in predicting material's behavior at the micro- and nanoscales, where the size effect is not negligible. Higher order continuum theories introduce new material constants into the formulation, making the interpretation of the size effect possible. One famous version of these theories is the couple stress theory, invoked to study the anti-plane problems of the elliptic inhomogeneities and inclusions in the present work. The formulation in elliptic coordinates leads to an exact series solution involving Mathieu functions. Subsequently, the elastic fields of a single inhomogeneity in conjunction with the Mori-Tanaka theory...

Nonlinear behavior of functionally graded circular plates with various boundary supports under asymmetric thermo-mechanical loading

    , Article Composite Structures ; Volume 94, Issue 9 , 2012 , Pages 2834-2850 ; 02638223 (ISSN) Fallah, F ; Nosier, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The equilibrium equations of the first-order nonlinear von Karman theory for FG circular plates under asymmetric transverse loading and heat conduction through the plate thickness are reformulated into those describing the interior and edge-zone problems of the plate. A two parameter perturbation technique, in conjunction with Fourier series method is used to obtain analytical solutions for nonlinear behavior of functionally graded circular plates with various clamped and simply-supported boundary conditions. The material properties are graded through the plate thickness according to a power-law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. The results are verified with known...

    Abstract
In addition to enhancement of the results near the point of application of a concentrated load in the vicinity of nano-size defects, capturing surface effects in small structures, in the framework of second strain gradient elasticity is of particular interest. In this framework, sixteen additional material constants are revealed, incorporating the role of atomic structures of the elastic solid. In this work, the analytical formulations of these constants corresponding to fee metals are given in terms of the parameters of Sutton-Chen interatomic potential function. The constants for ten fcc metals are computed and tabulized. Moreover, the exact closed-form solution of the bending of a...

Modeling of visco-hyperelastic behavior of foams

    , Article 2008 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, IMECE 2008, Boston, MA, 31 October 2008 through 6 November 2008 ; Volume 12 , 2009 , Pages 425-433 ; 9780791848739 (ISBN) Anani, Y ; Asghari, M ; Naghdabadi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
In this paper, a new visco-hyperelastic constitutive law for describing the rate dependent behavior of foams is proposed. The proposed model was based on a phenomenological Zener model: a hyperelastic equilibrium spring, which describes the steady-state, long-term response, parallel to a Maxwell element, which captures the rate-dependency. A nonlinear viscous damper connected in series to a hyperelastic intermediate spring, controls the rate-dependency of the Maxwell element. Therefore, the stress is the sum of equilibrium stress on the equilibrium spring and overstress on the intermediate spring. In hyperelastic theory stress is not calculated directly as in the case of small-strain, linear...

Modeling, simulation, and optimal initiation planning for needle insertion into the liver

    , Article Journal of Biomechanical Engineering ; Volume 132, Issue 4 , 2010 ; 01480731 (ISSN) Sharifi Sedeh, R ; Ahmadian, M. T ; Janabi Sharifi, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Needle insertion simulation and planning systems (SPSs) will play an important role in diminishing inappropriate insertions into soft tissues and resultant complications. Difficulties in SPS development are due in large part to the computational requirements of the extensive calculations in finite element (FE) models of tissue. For clinical feasibility, the computational speed of SPSs must be improved. At the same time, a realistic model of tissue properties that reflects large and velocity-dependent deformations must be employed. The purpose of this study is to address the aforementioned difficulties by presenting a cost-effective SPS platform for needle insertions into the liver. The study...
