Single source capacitated multi facility weber problem-an interactive two phase heuristic

    , Article Computers and Operations Research, Elsevier ; Volume 39, Issue 7 , July , 2012 , Pages 1465–1476 Eshghi, K ; Manzour-al-Ajdada, S. M. H ; Torabia, S. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Multi-Facility Weber Problem (MFWP), also known as continuous location–allocation problem, entails determining the locations of a predefined number of facilities in a planar space and their related customer allocations. In this paper, we focus on a new variant of the problem known as Single-Source Capacitated MFWP (SSCMFWP). To tackle the problem efficiently and effectively, an iterative two-phase heuristic algorithm is put forward. At the phase I, we aim to determine proper locations for facilities, and during the phase II, assignment of customers to these facilities is pursued. As an alternative solution method, a simulated annealing (SA) algorithm is also proposed for carrying out the...

Many to many hub and spoke location routing problem based on the gravity rule

    , Article Uncertain Supply Chain Management ; Volume 6, Issue 4 , 2018 , Pages 393-406 ; 22916822 (ISSN) Khosravi, S ; Akbari Jokar, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Growing Science  2018
    Abstract
This paper examines the spoke and hub location decisions in a routing problem. To minimize the total cost, the study analyzes on how to locate the spokes, hubs and the allocation of spoke nodes to hub nodes, the routing among the nodes and the number of vehicles assigned to each hub thoroughly. As there might be no facility assigned to some points, unsatisfied demands must be distributed to other nodes with available facilities. Furthermore, the realized demand is determined by considering the perceived utility of each path, using The Gravity rule. For this purpose, the proposed nonlinear model is transformed into a linear programming model, where some tightening rules and preprocessing...

Protecting location privacy through a graph-based location representation and a robust obfuscation technique

    , Article 11th International Conference on Information Security and Cryptology, ICISC 2008, Seoul, 3 December 2008 through 5 December 2008 ; Volume 5461 , 2009 , Pages 116-133 ; 03029743 (ISSN) Jafarian, J. H ; Ravari, A. N ; Amini, M ; Jalili, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
With technical advancement of location technologies and their widespread adoption, information regarding physical location of individuals is becoming more available, augmenting the development and growth of location-based services. As a result of such availability, threats to location privacy are increasing, entailing more robust and sophisticated solutions capable of providing users with straightforward yet flexible privacy. The ultimate objective of this work is to design a privacy- preserving solution, based on obfuscation techniques (imprecision and inaccuracy), capable of handling location privacy, as required by users and according to their preferences. To this aim, we propose an...

Facility and hub location model based on gravity rule

    Abstract
This paper presents a model for “Domestic Facility and Hub Location” in transportation network. Number of hubs and facilities are unknown and the objective is to minimize the transportation cost, lost demand penalty and facility set up costs. Also the distribution of demand among domestic facilities and hubs adheres to gravity rule. To solve the problem, sequential and integrated approaches were undertaken. In the sequential approach, domestic facilities were allocated and hubs were selected afterwards. However the integrated approach deals with both concurrently, with a more sophisticated steps reaching to the solution. This is mainly because the demand itself is highly dependent to where...

Fuzzy queuing location-allocation models for congested systems

    , Article International Journal of Industrial Engineering : Theory Applications and Practice ; Volume 11, Issue 4 , 2004 , Pages 364-376 ; 10724761 (ISSN) Shavandi, H ; Mahlooji, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Since in the emergency service networks the length of time to attend a call is of utmost importance, it is imperative to observe guidelines in locating the service centers within a service network and allocating the demand nodes to them in a manner that service can be provided within a reasonably short period of time. So far both qualitative and quantitative models have been developed to tackle these problems. The latest models which assume a probabilistic orientation, use queuing theory notions to achieve a more suitable solution. This article attempts to apply both queuing theory and fuzzy theory to the location-allocation problem in hope of analyzing the problem in a more realistic...

Location Privacy Preservation for Secondary Users in a Database-Driven Cognitive Radio Network

    , Article ISeCure ; Volume 14, Issue 2 , 2022 , Pages 215-227 ; 20082045 (ISSN) Salami, Z ; Ahmadian Attari, M ; Aref, M. R ; Jannati, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Since their introduction, Cognitive Radio Networks (CRN), as a new solution to the problem of spectrum scarcity, have received great attention from the research society. An important field in database-driven CRN studies is pivoted on their security issues. A critical issue in this context is user’s location privacy, which is potentially under serious threat. The query process by secondary users (SU) from the database is one of the points where the problem rises. In this paper, we propose a Privacy-Preserving Query Process (PPQP), accordingly. This method lets SUs deal in the process of spectrum query without sacrificing their location information. Analytical assessment of PPQP’s privacy...

The capacitated maximal covering location problem with heterogeneous facilities and vehicles and different setup costs: An effective heuristic approach

    , Article International Journal of Industrial Engineering Computations ; Volume 12, Issue 1 , 2020 , Pages 79-90 Hatami Gazani, M ; Akhavan Niaki, S. A ; Akhavan Niaki, S. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Growing Science  2020
    Abstract
In this research, a maximal covering location problem (MCLP) with real-world constraints such as multiple types of facilities and vehicles with different setup costs is taken into account. An original mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is constructed in order to find the optimal solution. Since the problem at hand is shown to be NP-hard, a constructive heuristic method and a meta-heuristic approach based on genetic algorithm (GA) are developed to solve the problem. To find the most effective solution technique, a set of problems of different sizes is randomly generated and solved by the proposed solution methods. Computational results demonstrate that the heuristic method is...

    Abstract
Technical evolution of location technologies has augmented the development and growth of location-based services. With widespread adoption of these services, threats to location privacy are increasing, entailing more robust and sophisticated solutions. This paper proposes an intuitive obfuscation-based scheme, which uses vagueness in human perception of nearness to provide a flexible and robust location privacy scheme. Key to this work is the concept of vagueness degree, which aims to enhance its robustness against privacy attacks. Furthermore, our scheme is totally in line with human perception of privacy and provides a solution, which mostly suits proximity-based services, social...

An approximation algorithm for the k-level uncapacitated facility location problem with penalties

    , Article 13th International Computer Society of Iran Computer Conference on Advances in Computer Science and Engineering, CSICC 2008, Kish Island, 9 March 2008 through 11 March 2008 ; Volume 6 CCIS , 2008 , Pages 41-49 ; 18650929 (ISSN); 3540899847 (ISBN); 9783540899846 (ISBN) Asadi, M ; Niknafs, A ; Ghodsi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
The k-level Uncapacitated Facility Location (UFL) problem is a generalization of the UFL and the k-median problems. A significant shortcoming of the classical UFL problem is that often a few very distant customers, known as outliers, can leave an undesirable effect on the final solution. This deficiency is considered in a new variant called UFL with outliers, in which, in contrast to the other problems that need all of the customers to be serviced, there is no need to service the entire set of customers. UFL with Penalties (UFLWP) is a variant of the UFL with outliers problem in which we will decide on whether to provide service for each customer and pay the connection cost, or to reject it...

The large-scale dynamic maximal covering location problem

    , Article Mathematical and Computer Modelling ; Volume 57, Issue 3-4 , February , 2013 , Pages 710-719 ; 08957177 (ISSN) Zarandi, M. H. F ; Davari, S ; Sisakht, S. A. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Most of the publications regarding the maxim covering location problem (MCLP) address the case where the decision is to be made for one period. In this paper, we deal with a rather untouched version of MCLP which is called dynamic MCLP (DMCLP). In order to solve this problem, a simulated annealing (SA) has been presented. The proposed solution algorithm is capable of solving problems with up to 2500 demand nodes and 200 potential facilities with a fair amount of exactness. Our experiments showed that the proposed approach finds solutions with errors less than one percent

Vehicle identification sensors location problem for large networks

    Abstract
Finding the optimal location for sensors is a key problem in flow estimation. There are several location models that have been developed recently for vehicle identification (ID) sensors. However, these location models cannot be applied to large networks because there are many constraints and integer variables. Based on a property of the location problem for vehicle ID sensors, given the initial vehicle ID sensors that are pre-installed and fixed on the network, this article presents a solution that greatly reduces the size of this location problem. An applied example demonstrates that when 8% of the arcs from a real network that are randomly selected have a vehicle ID sensor, the reductions...

Strategies for protecting supply chain networks against facility and transportation disruptions: An improved Benders decomposition approach

    , Article Annals of Operations Research ; Volume 210, Issue 1 , 2013 , Pages 125-163 ; 02545330 (ISSN) Azad, N ; Saharidis, G. K. D ; Davoudpour, H ; Malekly, H ; Yektamaram, S. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Disruptions rarely occur in supply chains, but their negative financial and technical impacts make the recovery process very slow. In this paper, we propose a capacitated supply chain network design (SCND) model under random disruptions both in facility and transportation, which seeks to determine the optimal location and types of distribution centers (DC) and also the best plan to assign customers to each opened DC. Unlike other studies in the extent literature, we use new concepts of reliability to model the strategic behavior of DCs and customers at the network: (1) Failure of DCs might be partial, i.e. a disrupted DC might still be able to serve with a portion of its initial capacity (2)...

Accurate unbalanced fault location method for multi-ended multi-tapped structures

    , Article International Review of Electrical Engineering ; Volume 8, Issue 2 , 2013 , Pages 839-848 ; 18276660 (ISSN) Rezaei Jegarluei, M ; Moaddabi, N ; Gharehpetian, G. B ; Mohammadalizadeh Shabestary, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The accurate fault location is an important criterion for protection system. Accurate and fast fault location decreases the outage time, consumers dissatisfaction and operation cost. Different methods have been proposed to determine the fault location. The impedance-based methods are usually used to protect power systems. The accuracy of these methods depends on system parameters and the structure of power systems. Also, these methods require an iterative process, the phase alignment and a high volume of data. Another algorithm has been newly presented based on negative sequence parameters, which is not iterative and the amount of data communicated between relays is small. Besides, this...

The large scale maximal covering location problem

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 18, Issue 6 , December , 2011 , Pages 1564-1570 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Fazel Zarandi, M. H ; Davari, S ; Haddad Sisakht, S. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The maximal covering location problem (MCLP) is a challenging problem with numerous applications in practice. Previous publications in the area of MCLP proposed models and presented solution methodologies to solve this problem with up to 900 nodes. Due to the fact that in real-life applications, the number of nodes could be much higher, this paper presents a customized Genetic Algorithm (GA) to solve MCLP instances, with up to 2500 nodes. Results show that the proposed approach is capable of solving problems with a fair amount of exactness. In order to fine-tune the algorithm, Tukey's Least Significant Difference (LSD) tests are employed on a set of test problems

    Abstract
Efficacious transportation, as prerequisites of sustainable development of rural areas, should receive pertinent attention. This needs more attention in developing countries as nearly half of population in these countries reside in rural areas. However, still little is known about the activity and travel characteristics of rural residents. This study focuses on activity-location (Ac-Lo) patterns of rural residents in Iran. An interview of place-based questionnaire was designed and data about activity-travel characteristics of rural residents was collected. In total, 663 respondents were used for analyzing out-of-home Ac-Lo patterns. Based on a descriptive analysis of Ac-Lo characteristics of...

Reconfiguring a set of coverage-providing facilities under travel time uncertainty

    Abstract
We study networks of facilities that must provide coverage under conditions of uncertainty with respect to travel times and customer demand. We model this uncertainty through a set of scenarios. Since opening new facilities and/or closing existing ones is often quite expensive, we focus on optimal re-configuration of the network, that is finding a facility set that achieves desired thresholds with respect to expected and minimal coverage, while retaining as many of the existing facilities as possible. We illustrate our model with an example of Toronto Fire Service. We demonstrate that relocating just a few facilities can have the same effect as opening a similar number of new ones. We...

A bi-objective multi-facility location-allocation problem with probabilistic customer locations and arrivals: two meta-heuristics using discrete approximation

    Abstract
In this work, a bi-objective multi-facility location-allocation problem is investigated, in which the locations of the customers and their arrivals are stochastic. We first formulate the problem as a continuous location-allocation model with no constraints on the capacity of the facilities. Then, we develop an approximated discrete model in which the facilities with limited capacities can be located on a set of candidate points. The proposed model has two objective functions that are evaluated using discrete event system simulation. The first objective is to minimize the expected total time the customers spend in the system until their services begin. The time that each customer spends in...

A novel robust possibilistic programming approach for the hazardous waste location-routing problem considering the risks of transportation and population

    Abstract
Nowadays, fast growth in industrial transformation and urbanization pushes the management of hazardous waste into a crisis for all markets. In this study, a multi-objective mathematical model is introduced to address a new version of the hazardous waste location-routing problem. As another multi-objective optimization model in this research area, the objective functions are minimizing the total costs, the overall risk associated with sending the hazardous waste, and the site risk related to the population in a given distance around the facilities. With regards to the literature and as far as the authors know, this is the first attempt to consider both risks of transportation and population...

Application of machine-learning models to estimate regional input coefficients and multipliers

    Abstract
Due to the unavailability of accurate data and the limitations of the existing methods, reliable input–output tables (IOTs) may not be available for all the regions in a country. This study proposes a novel approach to estimate the regional input coefficients. It harnesses the capabilities of machine-learning (ML) algorithms to estimate the regional input coefficients of one region based on the IOTs of multiple other regions for which reliable data are available. The application of three ML algorithms is investigated using data from Japan. The results highlight the superior performance of the ML models compared with location quotient models. © 2021 Regional Studies Association

A data-driven robust optimization for multi-objective renewable energy location by considering risk

    Abstract
Using Renewable Energy (RE) is growing day by day. We need to locate RE in the best place to maximize energy production and supplier profit. As a result, we propose a novel method for RE location (REL). This model suggests a Data-Driven Robust Optimization (DDRO) for multi-objective REL by considering Risk (DDROMORELR). We consider risk by adding min function in energy and profit objectives (government and supplier objectives). A DDRO approach is added to the model to tackle uncertainty and be close to the real world. We utilize an improved Augmented ε-constraint (AUGEPS2) to solve objectives and produce a Pareto front. We compare problems with DDRO and without considering DDRO, and the...
