    Abstract
The proliferation of more sensitive loads has obliged distribution companies to pay greater attention to the voltage sag mitigation potential of different design alternatives in network planning studies. In doing so, a company has to have effective tools for estimating the voltage sag performance of its network. In this regard, this paper establishes a three-step framework for evaluating voltage sag performance of a distribution network. The first step, designated as state selection, is to select a network state in which voltage sag is likely. Although voltage sags have various causes, those that originated from faults in distribution networks are considered in this paper. The stochastic...

    , Article CHISA 2006 - 17th International Congress of Chemical and Process Engineering, Prague, 27 August 2006 through 31 August 2006 ; 2006 ; 8086059456 (ISBN); 9788086059457 (ISBN) Mafi, M ; Yazdani, F ; Farhadi, F ; Deldari, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
Physical and hydraulic properties of new stainless steel spring packing are introduced. The measured hydraulic properties are: dry and wetted packed bed pressure drop, loading and flooding points and the liquid holdups. The appropriate coefficients for predicting the mentioned hydraulic properties from different correlations are also reported. Hydraulic properties for this packing are compared with available packings. In spite of small size, the dry and wetted packed bed pressure drops of spring packing are less than similar Raschig and Protruded rings. The total liquid holdup of this packing is greater than other commercial packings. The big total liquid holdup and physical surface area are...

An enhanced under-voltage load-shedding scheme to provide voltage stability

    , Article Electric Power Systems Research ; Volume 77, Issue 8 , 2007 , Pages 1038-1046 ; 03787796 (ISSN) Amraee, T ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Mozafari, B ; Sadati, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
Under-voltage load shedding is one of the most important tools for avoiding voltage instability. In this paper, an optimal load-shedding algorithm is developed. This approach is based on the concept of the static voltage stability margin and its sensitivity at the maximum loading point or the collapse point. The traditional load-shedding objective is extended to incorporate both technical and economic effects of load shedding. The voltage stability criterion is modeled directly into the load-shedding scheme. The proposed methodology is implemented over the IEEE 14 and 118 bus test systems and solved using a mathematical (GAMS/CONOPT) and two heuristic (PSO and GA) methods. The heuristic...

    Abstract
This study intends to develop a comprehensive procedure for evaluating locational value of a wind farm project incorporating reduction in transmission system losses, load delivery point interruption cost and operating cost of generating units. The energy extracted from the wind farm in normal operation condition is considered to replace the energy from fossil-fueled conventional units. In addition, composite system reliability analysis in the presence of wind power is carried out to evaluate total costs associated with curtailed energy at different load points as well as generation of generating units in contingency conditions. System reliability analysis related to large-scale wind farms,...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Vol. 25, issue. 3 , 2010 , p. 1962-1970 ; ISSN: 8858977 Zadkhast, S ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Aminifar, F ; Billinton, R ; Faried, S. O ; Edris, A. -A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Reliability evaluation of multiterminal HVDC systems has received very little attention in the past. This paper presents reliability modeling and analysis of an HVDC transmission system incorporating a voltage-sourced converter (VSC) tapping station. The use of VSC tapping stations enables the supply of power along the route to areas with comparatively little consumption. In this paper, a comprehensive detailed reliability model is developed and then converted to a manageable and computationally efficient model. Using this equivalent reliability model, various reliability indices are calculated at the load point of the system and the impacts of the VSC tapping station on these indices are...

Constructing the Bayesian network for components reliability importance ranking in composite power systems

    , Article International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems ; Volume 43, Issue 1 , 2012 , Pages 474-480 ; 01420615 (ISSN) Daemi, T ; Ebrahimi, A ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, Bayesian Network (BN) is used for reliability assessment of composite power systems with emphasis on the importance of system components. A simple approach is presented to construct the BN associated with a given power system. The approach is based on the capability of the BN to learn from data which makes it possible to be applied to large power systems. The required training data is provided by state sampling using the Monte Carlo simulation. The constructed BN is then used to perform different probabilistic assessments such as ranking the criticality and importance of system components from reliability perspective. The BN is also used to compute the frequency and...

    , Article INTELEC, International Telecommunications Energy Conference (Proceedings) ; 2011 ; 02750473 (ISSN) ; 9781457712494 (ISBN) Razi Kazemi, A. A ; Dehghanian, P ; Karami, G ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper investigates a reliability-centered approach for the placement procedure of remote terminal units (RTUs) in power distribution systems. Entire attempt is contributed to incorporate the practical aspects interrelated with the problem, e.g. the accessibility to the candidate substations, the load point criticality, as well as the load probabilistic behavior and consequently the inevitable variation in the electricity price. The placement process is done through an optimization problem wherein the common reliability indices, as the decisive factors in the placement process, are going to be minimized. The approach is successfully applied to a real power distribution feeder of Iran's...

Impacts of loop restoration strategy on distribution system reliability

, Article 2009 IEEE Bucharest PowerTech: Innovative Ideas Toward the Electrical Grid of the Future, 28 June 2009 through 2 July 2009 ; 2009 ; 9781424422357 (ISBN) Kazemi, S ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Sanaye Pasand, M ; Lehtonen, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Implementation of Distribution Automation (DA) in electric power distribution systems can result in customer satisfaction with improved reliability, consistent quality and high-tech services. Loop Restoration Strategy (LRS) is a special DA method in the feeder level which is used by electric utilities to improve distribution system reliability. The effects of the implemented LRS on the reliability indices of a given distribution system mainly depend on its Automatic Control System (ACS). Selecting the type of ACS of LRS by electric utilities relies on the level of improvement required at load points and system oriented reliability indices. A step by step evaluation procedure is proposed in...

    Abstract
DG application has received increasing attention during recent years. The impact of DG on various aspects of distribution system operation, such as reliability and energy loss, depend highly on DG location in distribution feeder. Optimal DG placement is an important subject which has not been fully discussed yet. This paper presents an optimization method to determine optimal DG placement, based on a cost/worth analysis approach. This method considers technical and economical factors such as energy loss, load point reliability indices and DG costs, and particularly, portability of DG. The proposed method is applied to a test system and the impacts of different parameters such as load growth...

    Abstract
This paper presents a reliability assessment algorithm for distribution systems using a Static Series Voltage Regulator (SSVR). Furthermore, this algorithm considers the effects of Distributed Generation (DG) units, alternative sources, system reconfiguration, load shedding and load adding on distribution system reliability indices. In this algorithm, load points are classified into 8 types and separated restoration times are considered for each class. Comparative studies are conducted to investigate the impacts of DG and alternative source unavailability on the distribution system reliability. For reliability assessment, the customer-oriented reliability indices such as SAIFI, SAIDI, CAIDI...

    Abstract
Access to a computational tractable method for representing the system more realistically has always been an important issue in power system reliability assessment. The Post Optimal Analysis (POA), as a well recognized technique to attack a set of similar optimization problems, has been successfully used to assess the reliability of composite systems. This method exploits the similarity of the system states to speed up the contingency evaluation procedure without sacrificing the accuracy of the results. In this paper, the performance and practical feasibility of the POA technique for power system reliability evaluation is tested using the Iran power grid. The POA based approach is applicable...

A heuristic-based approach for reliability importance assessment of energy producers

    , Article Energy Policy ; Vol. 39, issue. 3 , 2011 , Pages 1562-1568 ; ISSN: 03014215 Akhavein, A ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Reliability of energy supply is one of the most important issues of service quality. On one hand, customers usually have different expectations for service reliability and price. On the other hand, providing different level of reliability at load points is a challenge for system operators. In order to take reasonable decisions and obviate reliability implementation difficulties, market players need to know impacts of their assets on system and load-point reliabilities. One tool to specify reliability impacts of assets is the criticality or reliability importance measure by which system components can be ranked based on their effect on reliability. Conventional methods for determination of...

    Abstract
Power system equipments are normally designed for a specific system and load situation. This situation could change significantly as a result of the system expansion or aging. Among the system equipments, circuit breakers are more sensitive to the system expansion and they must be able to isolate the faulty components if a fault occurs. As the system load increases in the future, the power network must be expanded. In this situation, either the switching equipments must be replaced in order to be able to respond to the new fault current or the fault current must be limited to the interrupting capability of the existing circuit breakers. Application of Fault current Limiters (FCL) serves as a...
