    Abstract
The propagation of a Gaussian beam in underdense plasma with upward increasing density ramp is analyzed. In this work are shown that the spot size oscillations of laser beam increases and its amplitude shrinks with proper plasma density ramp. This causes the laser beam to become more focused and penetrations deep into the plasma by reduction of diffraction effect. The related focusing parameters are optimized to get the best possible focusing at the relativistic threshold intensity of Nd-glass laser and the effect of the laser intensity in the self-focusing parameters is also investigated. The analytical calculations are presented and showed more reliable results in comparison to the...

Heat transfer between micro- and nano-mechanical systems through optical channels

    , Article Journal of the Optical Society of America B: Optical Physics ; Vol. 31, issue. 7 , 2014 , pp. 1525-1532 ; ISSN: 07403224 Farman, F ; Bahrampour, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, a new mechanism of heat transfer is introduced. It is shown that, without emission and absorption of photons, light can operate as a channel of heat transfer between nano- or micro-mechanical oscillators. We consider the dynamics of two vibrating mirrors coupled through one optical cavity mode in an optomechanical system. It is shown that light mediates heat transfer between two micro-mirrors. When the detuning frequency of the mechanical resonators is low, fluctuations flow through the light channel from the high temperature vibrating mirror toward the low temperature one. This behavior is named the resonance heat transfer effect. The rate of heat flow between the mechanical...

    Abstract
The optimum convolution of dual short pulse for producing the maximum wakefield and the highest dissociation probability of CH4 has been investigated. By using three fundamental shapes of pulses though four different arrangements, the generated wake are considered in plasma. It is found that when the first and second pulses were rectangular-triangular and sinusoidal pulse shapes, respectively, the resultant wakefield amplitude is the highest. This effect opens up a new novel way by pulse shaping mechanism in the photo dissociation dynamics of molecules and controlling of chemical reactions in the desired channels by short pulse intense lasers for reducing the computation time of genetic...

Theoretical model for visible light saturable absorber nanolithography

    , Article Journal of Optics (United Kingdom) ; Volume 14, Issue 12 , 2012 ; 20408978 (ISSN) Tofighi, S ; Bahrampour, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
In this paper a saturable absorber medium is employed as an optical limiter to reduce the spot size to the range of several tens of nanometres. The characteristics of a Gaussian beam are theoretically analysed upon propagation through the saturable absorber medium. Based on Maxwell equations a system of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations for intensity, beam radius and beam curvature is obtained. Theoretical analyses and numerical results show that the behaviour of a Gaussian beam in a saturable absorber medium strongly depends on the initial characteristics of the laser beam. Numerical results indicate that, depending on the initial conditions and a suitable saturable absorber...

Self-focusing up to the incident laser wavelength by an appropriate density ramp

    , Article Laser and Particle Beams ; Volume 29, Issue 4 , 2011 , Pages 453-458 ; 02630346 (ISSN) Sadighi Bonabi, R ; Moshkelgosha, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This work is devoted to improving relativistic self-focusing of intense laser beam in underdense unmagnetized plasma. New density profiles are introduced to achieve beam width parameter up to the wavelength of the propagating laser. By investigating variations of the beam width parameter in presence of different density profiles it is found that the beam width parameter is considerably decreased for the introduced density ramp comparing with uniform density and earlier introduced density ramp profiles. By using this new density profile high intensity laser pulses are guided over several Rayleigh lengths with extremely small beam width parameter

    Abstract
Concentration procedures have always been implemented when trace analysis of compounds in real matrices is contemplated. A variety of concentration strategies have been reported aiming at decreasing the limits of detection (LODs). The optical concentration of the substance in solution is one of the novel concepts for the enhancement of the analytical sensitivity. In this study, the optical concentration has been measured by the trapping of gold nanoparticles ((Formula presented.) nm) dispersed in water at low-concentrations at the focal volume of the laser beam. The influence of factors such as the time of gold nanoparticle trapping, the size of the nanoparticles, the intensity of the laser...

    Abstract
Laser-directed energy deposition is a fast-growing method for manufacturing complex geometries and materials that are hard to shape with conventional manufacturing methods. However, there are some aspects of this process that need more researches and experiments to be completely understood. Two of these are laser attenuation and laser intensity distribution on the workpiece surface. In this paper, a new method is proposed for calculating laser attenuation without simplification applied in previous works. Despite other studies that consider a predefined powder distribution, the result of a developed 3D CFD model of the powder stream is utilized for defining the position of particles in the...

    , Article Applied Optics ; Volume 52, Issue 6 , 2013 , Pages 1317-1324 ; 1559128X (ISSN) Ardakani, A. G ; Mahdavi, S. M ; Bahrampour, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Time-dependent model is presented to simulate random lasers in the presence of an inhomogeneous gain medium. PbSe quantum dots (QDs) with an arbitrary size distribution are treated as an inhomogeneous gain medium. By introducing inhomogeneity of the PbSe QDs in polarization, rate, and Maxwell's equations, our model is constructed for a one-dimensional disordered system. By employing the finite difference time-domain method, the governing equations are numerically solved and lasing spectra and spatial distribution of the electric field are calculated. The effect of increasing the pumping rate on the laser characteristics is investigated. The results show that the number of lasing modes and...

    Abstract
Relativistic electrons, generated in the interaction of an ultra-intense laser pulse with plasma in front of a high-Z solid target, when passing near the nuclei of the solid target produce several MeV highly collimated Bremsstrahlung gamma beam, which can be used to induce photo-nuclear reactions. In this work the possibility of photo-induced transmutation (γn) of a nuclear waste of 126Sn with a half-life of 100,000 years into 125Sn with a half-life of 9.64 days was investigated for the first time. Calculations based on the available experimental data show that the Bremsstrahlung γ beam generated by irradiating a 2 mm thick tantalum target as a converter with 1020Wcm-2μm2 and 10 Hz table-top...

Potential and energy of the monoenergetic electrons in an alternative ellipsoid bubble model

    , Article Physical Review A - Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics ; Volume 81, Issue 2 , 2010 ; 10502947 (ISSN) Sadighi Bonabi, R ; Rahmatallahpur, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The electron acceleration in the bubble regime is considered during the intense laser-plasma interaction. The presented ellipsoid cavity model is more consistent than the previous spherical model, and it explains the monoenergetic electron trajectory more accurately. At the relativistic region, the maximum energy of electrons in the ellipsoid model is about 24% more than the spherical model, and this is confirmed by PIC and the measured experimental results reported here. The electron energy spectrum is also calculated, and it is found that the energy distribution ratio of electrons ΔE/E for the ellipsoid model in the here reported condition is about 11% which is less than the one third that...

    , Article Optics and Laser Technology ; Volume 41, Issue 4 , 2009 , Pages 454-460 ; 00303992 (ISSN) Golnabi, H ; Bahar, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Laser cutting characteristics including power level and cutting gas pressure are investigated in order to obtain an optimum kerf width. The kerf width is investigated for a laser power range of 50-170 W and a gas pressure of 1-6 bar for steel and mild steel materials. Variation of sample thickness, material type, gas pressure and laser power on the average cut width and slot quality are investigated. Optimum conditions for the steel and mild steel materials with a thickness range of 1-2 mm are obtained. The optimum condition for the steel cutting results in a minimum average kerf width of 0.2 mm at a laser power of 67 W, cutting rate of 7.1 mm/s and an oxygen pressure of 4 bar. A similar...

    Abstract
In this work propagation of a high frequency electromagnetic wave in underdense plasma in presence of an external magnetic field is investigated. When a constant magnetic field perpendicular to the motion of electrons is applied, then the electrons rotate around the magnetic field lines and generate electromagnetic part in the wake with a nonzero group velocity. By using of the Maxwell equations and nonlinear differential equation for the electric field a direct one-dimensional (1D) procedure for calculating hydrodynamic equations are developed and the electric and magnetic field profiles in the plasma are investigated. It is shown that by using the external (dc) magnetic field in constant...

    Abstract
A binary differential impulse radio-ultra wide band (IR-UWB) communication scheme over a single-mode optical fibre is examined. For a receiver structure, the conventional electrical receiver as well as an optical receiver structure, which is similar to the optical receiver used for digital, optically phase-modulated differential phase shift keying, are considered. The optical receiver can alleviate the IR-UWB receiver implementation challenges and it is studied for the first time in the context of IR-UWB. Considering various important noises, for example, phase noise, laser intensity noise, thermal noise and shot noise, analytical expressions for the error probability of the aforementioned...
