    Abstract
Background: To identify and synthesize available published studies on the effect of local muscle vibration (LMV) on pain, stiffness, and function in individuals with knee OA.Methods: Five databases were searched to find relevant papers on April 29, 2020, including, PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE (Ovid), Science Citation Index, and COCHRANE Central Register for Controlled Trials (CENTRAL). Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and nonrandomized-controlled-trials (non-RCTs), such as interrupted time series and prospective cohort studies were included. Two independent reviewers screened articles and assessed inclusion through predefined criteria. Participants' characteristics, study design, intervention...

Complexity and variability of the center of pressure time series during quiet standing in patients with knee osteoarthritis

    Abstract
Background While several studies have investigated the traditional linear measures in patients with knee osteoarthritis, no study has yet reported the non-linear structure of postural sway in these patients. Methods We used two non-linear methods, recurrence quantification analysis (percent of determinism-%DET) and central tendency measure, to respectively investigate differences in the complexity and variability of sway dynamics between two groups of knee osteoarthritis patients (n = 27) and healthy controls (n = 27) under different conditions of postural and cognitive tasks. The experimental conditions included standing on (1) rigid surface with open eyes; (2) rigid surface with closed...

Effects of an exercise therapy targeting knee kinetics on pain, function, and gait kinetics in patients with knee osteoarthritis: A randomized clinical trial

    Abstract
In this study, the effects of an exercise therapy comprising yoga exercises and medial-thrust gait (YogaMT) on lower-extremity kinetics, pain, and function in patients with medial knee osteoarthritis were investigated. Fifty-nine patients were randomly allocated to three treatment groups: (a) the YogaMT group practiced yoga exercises and medial thrust gait, (b) the knee-strengthening group performed quadriceps-and hamstring-strengthening exercises, and (c) the treadmill walking group practiced normal treadmill walking in 12 supervised sessions. The adduction and flexion moments of the hip, knee, and ankle; pain intensity; and 2-min walking test were assessed before and after treatment and at...

Comparing Two orthoses for managing medial knee osteoarthritis: lateral wedge with subtalar strap while barefoot versus lateral wedged insole fitted within sandal

    , Article Indian Journal of Orthopaedics ; Volume 56, Issue 2 , 2022 , Pages 319-326 ; 00195413 (ISSN) Falahatgar, M ; Jalali, M ; Babaee, T ; Safaeepour, Z ; Torkaman, A ; Baniasad, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Background: Using foot orthoses for managing medial knee osteoarthritis (MKOA) is common, although its effectiveness is in debate. Most orthoses are placed inside the shoe as a lateral wedged insole. Thus, most studies in this area have focused on the effect of insoles used with shoes. This study compared the effects of a lateral wedge with subtalar strap (combined insole) used while barefoot and lateral wedged insole fitted within sandal on pain, function and external knee adduction moment (EKAM) in patients with MKOA to consider which orthotic treatment is better. Methods: In this quasi-experimental pretest–posttest study, 29 participants with medial knee osteoarthritis were divided into...

Cultural adaptation and validation of the persian version of the arthritis impact measurement scales 2-short form in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee

    , Article Disability and Rehabilitation ; Volume 31, Issue 25 , 2009 , Pages 2081-2087 ; 09638288 (ISSN) Askary Ashtiani, A. R ; Mousavi, J ; Montazeri, A ; Shamsollahi, S ; Parnianpour, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Purpose. To translate and validate the Persian version of the Arthritis Measurement Scales 2-Short Form (AIMS2-SF) in patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. Method. The translation and cultural adaptation of the original questionnaire was carried out in accordance with published guidelines. One hundred and fourteen consecutive Persian-speaking patients with OA of the knee were participated in this study. The Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) and visual analogue scales (VAS) for pain and joint stiffness were used to test convergent validity of the Persian AIMS2-SF. In addition, 35 randomly selected patients were asked to complete the questionnaire 3 days later for the second time....

Uncontrolled manifold analysis of gait kinematic synergy during normal and narrow path walking in individuals with knee osteoarthritis compared to asymptomatic individuals

    , Article Journal of Biomechanics ; Volume 141 , 2022 ; 00219290 (ISSN) Shafizadegan, Z ; Sarrafzadeh, J ; Farahmand, F ; Salehi, R ; Rasouli, O ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a common musculoskeletal disorder resulting in altered gait patterns. Uncontrolled manifold (UCM) analysis has been demonstrated as a useful approach for quantitative analysis of motor variability and synergies. The present study aimed to investigate the changes in the kinematic synergy, controlling the center of mass (COM) position while walking on normal and narrow paths in people with KOA compared to asymptomatic participants. In this cross-sectional study, twenty people with mild to moderate KOA and twenty asymptomatic individuals walked at their comfortable preferred speed across normal and narrow paths on a treadmill. The UCM analysis was performed...

Translation and validation study of the Persian version of the Arthritis Impact Measurement Scales 2 (AIMS2) in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee

    Abstract
Background. The Arthritis Impact Measurement Scales 2 (AIMS2) has not been translated and validated for Persian-speaking patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. This was to provide a validated instrument to measure functional disability and health-related quality of life in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee in Iran. The aim of this study was to culturally adapt and validate the AIMS2 for Persian-speaking patients with osteoarthritis of the knee in Iran. Methods. A consecutive sample of patients with knee osteoarthritis were asked to complete the AIMS2, the Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) and four visual analog scales for pain, joint stiffness, patient's and physician's global...

    Abstract
Background: Longitudinal data on the association of quantitative thigh muscle MRI markers with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) outcomes are scarce. These associations are of clinical importance, with potential use for thigh muscle–directed disease-modifying interventions. Purpose: To measure KOA-associated longitudinal changes in MRI-derived muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) and adipose tissue and their association with downstream symptom worsening and knee replacement (KR). Materials and Methods: In a secondary analysis of the Osteoarthritis Initiative multicenter prospective cohort (February 2004 through October 2015), knees of participants with available good-quality thigh MRI scans at baseline...
